「I can see the moonlight only in your words.」
*Amy and Elma's story summarized + additional trivia* Edit (July 13, 2020): Most of what I wrote back then was was wrong. I have revised it as I've gotten a better understanding of their creativity after researching more. *Characters:* Amy, male, a musician that failed to become successful. Elma, female, inspired by Amy to become a musician. *The story:* Amy is a struggling musician, trying his best to become noticed and make it big. Amy and Elma met in a café during the rain (Rain and Cappuccino) where Elma noticed Amy was writing something on a flat A4 piece of paper, trashing it, taking out a book (journal) and rewriting it again. Afterwards, Amy fell asleep and the A4 paper he trashed was swept by the wind and into Elma's feet. Elma, out of pure curiosity opened the paper and as clueless of music as she was, knew that it was meant to be a song. Amy wakes up and Elma rushed to hide the paper. Amy and Elma became close afterwards, meeting at a nearby church playing piano together everytime it rained and they took shelter. Suddenly, the rain stopped* and Amy didn't come back. _*(a metaphor saying that the good days of seeking shelter together in the church to play the piano has ended.)_ Amy was travelling around the Sweden and during this, he was writing songs about his struggles as a musician, the jealousy he feels to writers that are genuine about their work, his memories and how Elma is still in his mind even after he left. He sent the things he wrote to Elma, along with some letters before committing suicide. Elma, after then, receiving his letters, went to Sweden to follow his tracks, like a homage to their memories together, to know what he was up to and how he felt. During Elma's trip in Sweden, she was writing songs about Amy and how she felt about him and how she was scared. When Elma found the guitar at the pier, she realized that Amy had committed suicide there, drinking the poison he used as an ink and drowning in the ocean (can be seen in the music videos). n-buna wrote a story and had it narrated in the point of view of their fictional characters named Amy and Elma. The albums are titled "That's Why I Gave Up On Music" and "Elma". In the lore, all the songs in the album "That's Why I Gave Up On Music" were all written by Amy. This album's journal was written when Amy was still alive (from 3/14 - 8/31)* In the album "Elma", it's all written by Elma during her trip in Sweden. Amy's album focuses in his side of the story and his will to be a musician. He failed and gave up then committed suicide on August 31* (more details later). Elma's album focuses more on her afterthoughts and what actually happened. Her regrets, her memories, her inspiration, and her interactions with Amy are all the main lyrical theme of "Elma"**. This was written after Amy's death and Elma is just telling the story. *Notes:* _The songs on the EP aren't officially confirmed to be connected to the story of the two official albums._ Amy's lyrics can often be interpreted as how insignificant he feels, his jealousy and bitterness, and how he thinks the words he's writing is ingenuine. Amy committed suicide at the pier because it also means "departure". *The first album's storyline is complicated (in the way that it's an anachronistic). There are 2 ways to go with it. The way n-buna intended and the chronological timeline. In the original, 8/31 is the first date you'll see but it's also the latest he wrote in the journal and the first date he wrote in it was 3/14. All the other ones were written before 8/31 and after 3/14. This is due to how Amy wrote on random pages in his journal, instead of starting from the first page. **This can be seen throughout the whole album. Elma wrote about the past, what she was thinking before and until Amy committed suicide. *Additional info: (related to Yorushika)* Thanks to ledaero08 (he's the one that explained it really clearly). It was likely that Amy had a heart condition. The proof was in the radio but I didn't listen to it, sadly and the lyrics of "August, That Place, Moonlight" also implies he has a heart disease. Yorushika also wants you to enjoy their music PURELY and without judging it based on n-buna and suis' looks and personalities so they stopped using SNS and tries to stay away from mainstream media. *More info regarding n-buna:* n-buna was a vocaloid producer. The first time he made music with suis was more of a business relationship than a friendly one (from n-buna himself during the radio) but now, he says he can't imagine writing songs without having suis sing it. *TL;DR:* Amy committed suicide and left a journal and Elma wrote a full album about it filled with her emotions. Amy's journal is the album "だから僕は音楽を辞めた" (That's Why I Gave Up On Music) and Elma's album is titled "エルマ" (Elma). Both are written by Elma, that's why the voice is a female, the album "だから僕は音楽を辞めた" (That's Why I Gave Up On Music) was made using the letters Amy left behind and "エルマ" (Elma) is Elma's replies, thoughts, and feelings. Special thanks to EJ Translations and Night Deer Translations. It's because of them I managed to get a grasp on the story. My past comment has been deleted. Link to unfinished journal of Amy: twitter.com/NightDeerTL/status/1263446313833619458?s=19 Link to Elma's Diary (read after Amy's for a better experience): www.reddit.com/r/Yorushika/comments/fjo08s/i_fully_translated_elmas_diary/? *Note: this is more or less an open-ended interpretation. To get a better grasp on the story and to have your own perspective of it, I recommend reading the journals. This is merely a summary of what I found impactful and a lot of parts are cut (like way too many including a huge part of their first meetings before Amy went to Sweden) for simplicity's sake.*

@@namp2018 And I think Hitchcock and Say it are from a different history, same as Parade, but they really fit this characters and this history so well, maybe Yorushika made that on purpose. I take Hitchcock more optimistic than Amy's history was, like... "I'm suffering, this life is hard and I don't do anything with it, all of these things aren't fair, but even though, I'll move on and try to live, because it's ok if I suffer, it's ok if I have these feelings, the thing is knowing that I can move on and I'm not alone, I'm not the only one that's going through this [Referring to the teacher], It's fine if anyone has the answer, I will find out by myself". Or maybe Hitchcock could came from Elma's thoughs (Because I find Elma more optimistic), not knowing what should she do now that Amy's gone (Maybe she wanted to be a musician too, due we saw her playing the piano and then Amy clapping to her, I don't really know, I just find that fact interesting). Thank you so much for doing this comment by the way!!

Hi, this is a really great interpretation! I just wanted to add my perspective! I think that after Amy passed, Elma tried living her life like Amy would've, keeping him alive in a way. That's why we see her going to places he visited and reminiscing so much about him, she "gave up" her life to live the one he couldn't. I interpreted that A Hole Opened Up in my Heart was the breaking point for her; she finally understood that she needed to move on. Thank you so much for writing all this! notes: -In both A Hole Opened Up in my Heart and Rain with Cappuccino, Elma talks about keeping him with her and not wanting him to fade, even saying "I want to write about my life, which I wanted to make into your life" -I think that the "transparent" we see in Amy and Elma represents some sort of burden, which passes to Elma in Rain with Cappuccino

@@cseaa I agree! Elma tried copying Amy's life so that in a way Amy could keep on "living". Though i also understood it as a way for her to understand Amy's POV because she wanted to continue the songs Amy was writing. In a hole opened in my heart, she finally understood what Amy meant when he said that "Elma, you alone are my music". Because just like how Amy writes music for Elma, from now on Elma will be writing music for Amy --- and the result is all of Yorushika's songs 🤯 Its so heartbreaking, ive literally been so hung up on their songs and been analyzing it for days! I should go follow another band with cheery songs to get rid of this damn depression 😩😣
