My favorite part of this whole mess is the "I didn't do anything, I thought you did!" line because it implies that they're using the _same keyboard_ at the _same time,_ but *_separately_*

And neither of them knew what the other was doing. This reminds me of ten thousand monkeys pounding at a keyboard and in a few million years they might write a line out of Shakespeare.

It's the worst display of *TV* hacking. The worst display of _movie_ hacking is Swordfish. Either the scene where Hugh Jackman is being given a blowjob with a gun pointed at his head and hacks a server in 2 minutes which supposedly takes an hour, or the scene where Hugh Jackman spins round in his chair in front of 6 monitors while a virtual 3D rubiks cube is solved on screen.

A lot of these shows are written to make old people feel like they understand young people things while also making them feel superior for being older. In this example, the two caricatures of young people do what old people think young people do: pound quickly on keyboards while shouting computer jargon. Hack! Node! Encryption! CODE! They are smart but baffled. Like the old people watching the show, they are confused by the technology things shouting at them. Luckily, an old person is there to step in and save the day. How? Not by being smarter at the technology things than the young people but by employing ol' fashioned common sense. I.e., he unplugs the stupid technology thing that is causing all the problems. Yay old people! And now a commercial for Metamucil Brand Life Insurance .

If the computer is unplugged, and the hacker was connected to that computer, their connection will be reset/closed. You need a service to connect to and that service needs a processor and memory and an operating system to connect to them which all need electricity (the plug to be in) to work

If anyone wants to know what it's really like...I work in network security; an event is a lot less like this, and lot more like 5 conference calls, going through a thousand pages of logs, and then scrambling to get some executive who doesn't know anything about security to approve you doing a change in middle of the day saying "For the hundredth time, Frank, it's not going to disrupt customer applications" only to find out what really happened is some 80-year-old who is inexplicably not retired "called Microsoft" because they got a pop-up about having a virus and let some guy in India install software on his machine.

Mike Rotella as a Cybersec analyst myself, yes. Logs in the SIEM, manual review, writing up the report, explaining the report, reassuring them you’re trying to fix it while keeping them aware of business impact, it’s a lot more boring than what is shown here. Not to say I find it boring but when you’re writing stuff like this for a non-technical audience while you also are non-technical? It can’t be easy. I don’t blame them for trying to spice it up for the drama.

Kinda boring. Noticing that either some files have been moved or accessed when they shouldn't have, or that you have a new fun program running in the background. Though the seizuretastic accessing of files does have it's flare. And honestly the best way to deal with a real time hack like this is just reach for the ethernet cord.

CAN Y'ALL IMAGINE HOW MUCH FUN IT WAS TO FILM THIS SCENE. These actors must truly be some of the greatest of all time to stay so serious during this.

You can say it is changing user account and ssh permissions or something. Pretty inaccurate but leaps and bounds ahead of this. The dude having to stay onsite till hack runs is accurate, though telling exactly how long it takes is impossible. There are some things that can somewhat be linked to real life.
