Had difficulty starting, stalling at stops and loss of power. I Followed the instructions above for my Pinnicle 150cc, and it worked. No more difficult starting, no more stalling at stops and top speed increased by 10mph. So thankful for this instructive video. I am a chiropractor, not a mechanic, and if I can do it, so can you.

Same. My scooter used to start with slight difficulty even with the idle set fairly high, has erratic idle and felt sluggish. I thought it was the carb but despite adjusting every single thing possible on it, the problem still persisted. The valve adjustment pretty much transformed it. Power and speed increased, idle is stable, starts easily. Feels like a totally different scooter.

Thanks! I believe the valves are closed. When a valve is open, the cam lobe would be pressing on the rocker arm, which would in turn be pressing on the valve stem. At that point, the tappet would be contacting the valve stem, so there would be no gap anymore. I think the reason the service manual says to measure clearance at TDC is that it's a known point where both valves are sure to be closed.

Thanx man! This is just wat i needed. Have to adjust the valves of my SYM G6Y engine and thats almost the same. This was the last thing that i needed, to be able to do maintanance all by myself. Great video!
@nd1996mn14 жыл бұрын
@PhilipHo92 Hi! From the factory it should be set exactly right. However, as the parts wear over time, the clearance will change. When you adjust it, you are actually getting it back to the original factory setting. One thing to note, too: I think the clearance for the 50cc is a little different from what I show in the video. I think it's .08mm but please check a manual for your specific model to be sure.
@nd1996mn13 жыл бұрын
@palmisano Yes, that one is tough to reach. I haven't seen a 2010 model, so it may be worse. You may want to try using an extension and/or one of those socket drives with the universal joint, to allow you to "bend around" the engine a bit. You may also be able to *gently* bend the plastic enough to get in there. Worst case, you'll have to chase down the screws and take off that body panel. Good luck!

@Mobeilfreak The gauge used in the video is .004 inches, which is very close to .1016mm
@nd1996mn15 жыл бұрын
I have never worked on an Agility 125, but the procedure should be very similar. I *think* the clearance for the Agility 125 is 0.12mm (which is .0047 inches) so it's a little bit higher than the Super8 shown in the video. You should check your manual (or consult with a shop) to confirm what the clearance should be.

@palmisano Hi! The procedure is the same but the clearance is different. I think it's 0.08mm for a 50cc but you should probably check a manual or ask a shop what the setting is, just to be safe. I think someone else commented on this video saying they use 0.08mm for his 50cc.

@hofnoan Hi. Yes you are correct. Once you have the engine at top dead center, leave it there and set *both* valves.
@nd1996mn12 жыл бұрын
Hi. I remove the battery just as a precaution, since I'm working in that general area. I don't want to cause a short by accidentally brushing against the terminals, or dropping a screwdriver that just happens to fall across the two of them.
@nd1996mn15 жыл бұрын
You should do it every so often--see your owners manual; it should be listed in there. Typically it's somewhere between every 2000 and 4000 miles. Generally, the interval is set to be "safe"...the valves/screws don't wear so fast that a major problem would develop between checks. With too much gap, you'll notice a loss of power or an increase in engine noise. Too little gap and, the valves won't close at the right point (or completely) and they'll eventually burn up.
@nd1996mn12 жыл бұрын
Hello. Yes, the engine type/size *does matter* when setting the clearance. It's not really a strict function of displacement though (for example, I have a 750 cc motorcycle that uses the same clearance as my scooter). The clearance provides space for thermal expansion of the valves, so the setting is specific to the engine design. The information you need should be in your manual, or available on line. Try to find it--too loose runs poorly, too tight burns up the valves!

Thanks alot for this video. I've always wondered what was meant by valve adjustment. This was a perfect example. One question, how do you know when you have to adjust the valves? Is it when you don't have any power when you're trying to accelerate? I bought a new scoot 3 months ago and it's working. No reason to do the valve adjustments if the scoot is running fine? Or this is something you have to do every so often?

Hi, great video man! I got a Kymco Super 8 50cc and I have been thinking on doing this if it would help. Is the factory setting not optimized to get best preformance? If I do this could I get the engine run better? Thankful for reply!
@nd1996mn11 жыл бұрын
I would check the auto bystarter first-it's a sort of electronic choke that helps start a cold engine. I'd guess it's not working, so your engine starts hard when cold but is fine after it's warm. You can find directions online for testing it.

Hey bro I have a question. I have an agility 50, and it starts up great if i turn it off to go in the store and come right back out and hop on it again, but if it sits for more than like an hour, the thing turns over for like 45 seconds before it fires up. I'm giving it gas too during all this. Think it is a valve adjustment issue? I've changed the sparkplug, battery, and adjusted the carb already.

How about super 8 125cc what is the clearance size for that?

Hello! Nice video you have! I just wanna ask if the valve clearance matters when it regards to the displacement of the scooter?. Because I have a kawasaki curve 115cc which is also from kymco they just have partnership with kawasaki same engine structure as yours. My question is do I still use .004 inches feeler gauge?.

hello sir I was at lost for a while looking for a way to resolve my Super 8 125 problem, it is not starting in cold weather, but if i use a hairdryer with medium heat on an blow it around the carburetor area down to the sparkplug side for a good 3 minutes without removing anything it starts like everything's fine.
@nvrsydie228 жыл бұрын
oh and by the way, i already removed my kickstarter because of a recent incident. so i only rely on my battery.
@nd1996mn8 жыл бұрын
Marlon Manicad maybe check the auto bystarter. It's an electronic choke that helps with cold starts and turns off as the engine warms up. They seem to break or wear out often. I would guess yours isn't working (doesn't turn on). When you heat the engine manually, it reaches a temp where the bystarter isn't needed, so it starts ok.
@nvrsydie228 жыл бұрын
nd1996mn thanks for your reply, i've done some work around and included your ideas, it seemed helped a bit, i finally traced the cause, its the settings inside the carburetor i replaced it with a slightly bigger hole and to make it more efficient and permanent i replaced a new 9 amp battery too. Its working perfectly fine now.

I attempt to adjust my valves on my 2014 Kymco Super 8 150 and as I was trying to adjust them I noticed that my spring valves didn't shift up and down as you rotate the flywheel I think my spring valves are stuck in the closed position any suggestion on how to get them unstuck without removing the head master cylinder
@nd1996mn6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...when you rotate the flywheel do the rocker arms (the part that pushes on the end of the valve) move? Another thing to check is if the cam is rotating...maybe the chain is broken? Im guessing your bike does not run currently?

nd1996mn after on revolution after ending in top dead center I recheck the rocker arm and they were super tight against the spring valve
@nd1996mn6 жыл бұрын

Ok here's an update I checked my valves and they were in excellent working condition and the only dilemma I have should the intake be set at .004 and the exhaust .005 or .004 for intake and .004 for exhaust. And I notice after trying to start the engine it tries to turn over but "no go" and I also notice there's no fuel flow to the carburetor. The wierd thing I checked the fuel pump by adding vacuum to the vacuum hose and it had fuel flow. I then removed the fuel hose to the carb and applied vacuum to the vac house and I had fuel flow then reconnected the fuel house to the carb and again I applied vacuum to the vac hose and no fuel flow to the carb..I need big time suggestion..

jayman826 the valve in the carburetor float bowl might be stuck closed.
@jayman8266 жыл бұрын
nd1996mn I checked the float bowl and nothing is wrong with it
@nd1996mn6 жыл бұрын
jayman826 hmm...if you are getting fuel through the tube (when applying vacuum to the fuel valve), but the bowl is dry, there aren’t many places left to look. Either that passageway is blocked in the carb body between the bowl and the tube, or the valve is stuck closed. If the bowl is wet/full, but you aren’t getting fuel to the engine, then the carb jets are plugged and the carb needs a cleaning.

hi sir, may i ask, what is the purpose of adjusting those valves?
@nd1996mn8 жыл бұрын
allison Guitche hi. It wears over time. The gap gives some room for the parts to expand as the engine heats up. If it's too small the valves may not close all the way. If it's too large the valves won't open enough to let the right amount of air/fuel in, or the exhaust out. The adjustment to the gap keeps it operating optimally for the engine design.
