I love how the last joke is an allegory for batmans and jokers situation: Both were insane aka patients at an assylum that one day decided they wanted to get better aka leave the assylum, batman made the leap through the gap between the buildings "no problem" and made it back to the land of the sane but joker was afraid of making said leap, It was simply too far. So batman, now sane, offers to help him by shinning a Bridge of light. This last part could be taken many different ways but I personally like to interpret it as that joker thinks batman is insane for thinking he can provide anything that can truly help, any therapy or support batman can give in order to help joker get cured of his ailment is going to be as effective as the Bridge of light in the aforementioned joke. The punchline is also worth discussing: " you'd turn it off when I was half way across¡" This may mean that joker,even with how far fetched and surreal he sees redemption, would be willing to accept batmans help but the thing truly holding him back is that he is too paranoid that batman would just abandon him when he was half-way through his rehabilitation and he'd just plunge back into the abyss.

Nah, you've got it wrong my guy. Batman isn't "now sane", the whole point of the joke is that both of the patients are insane but in different ways. Batman offers to shine a light across the gap, so Joker can "walk across the beam and join me". But you can't walk across a beam of light, you'll fall right through. It's saying Batman is insane to think that he can help the Joker and is offering a solution that will not work. But the Joker is insane in a slightly different way. The punchline is that the Joker is just as insane as to believe that he could walk across a beam of light, but distrustful of Batman that he believes that Batman would rescind that help if Joker ever accepted the offer.

Joker's remark about no longer remembering his past clearly and the terrible things that made him what he is - how he'd prefer his past be "multiple choice" - resonates in Heath Ledger's portrayal with the various backstories he told about his scars. It's what makes the Joker so mysterious and sinister in the first place. So memorable. Clearly many notes were taken from The Killing Joke. I love it.
@glennchartrand54113 жыл бұрын
At one of the comic cons a writer was asked if Joker really is insane....he isnt, he just knows he's a comic book character. Well,that explains everything that makes his character different. You see hints of it over and over. He'll reference events that happened in a different story line when speaking to another character ( he literally gets mixed up about what version of the DCU he's in.) When speaking to other characters he routinely starts talking to the audience. Sometimes he's genuinely tickled by the work of the writers , other times he makes fun of it ( Just like Deadpool ) His only fear is being written out of the plot , which is the only way he can actually die. So he works at staying in character and being entertaining. The thing that bothers him the most about the situation is he knows that he isnt the main character.

I think it's interesting that the polarity of Batman and Joker in this sense is that Batman DID have that bad day. An event that haunts him, drives him; he remembers everything about that moment clearly. It's what made him into the Batman; who, by most standards, is insane for living the life of a vigilante. It's his purpose to stop that same event from occuring to another scared little boy. The Joker is quite the opposite. He doesn't quite remember what drove him to this point. He has many tellings of it or reasons for doing so. Where as Batman wants to save people from suffering like he has, the Joker wants everyone to suffer like he has. And it's possible that he simply cascaded into deeper sense of insanity and loss of control the more terrible things he does. He knows they're wrong. Batman being someone who stands in defiance is living proof that the Joker is wrong. And that's what drives him to torture Batman. Because he was able to do what Joker couldn't. And that was to simply shoulder the worst day of his life, then turn it around into a strength. Both men face their worst day in this book. It made Batman want to help people, while it made the Joker want to hurt people. In a sense, everyone has this choice when they suffer something horrible.
@blockhead1343 жыл бұрын
Its also important that Batman obssesses over his parents decades later, allowing it to define every aspect of his life. He dresses in a silly costume and punches drug addicts in the streets because of them. In most continuities, he has trouble maintaining any sort of relationship because of them. Batman *is* just as mad as the rest, he is just extremely smart and useful to society, so it would take way more than its worth to help him.

Most people have been worshiping Heath Ledgers Joker. All because of their silly anarchist wet dream Comic fans understand or try and understand his character. I for one analyze Batman. His entire motive is to ensure o child is orphaned by "some punk with a gun". However, he allows the Joker to continue living to do just that. The Batman Who Laughs even stated that he's the least successful and least happy Batman. All the other Batman counter parts made Gotham a shining utopia or at least made crime so miniscule that it barely registers as crime. All through NOT dressing as a Bat and using their power, wealth and influence to make real change. I've always felt he could do so much more. Injustice 2 Batman, after Superman's defeat, started going in that direction. I know he's written that way (for you weirdos that keep pointing that out) but in the DC universe it always makes me analyze what drives these characters. I enjoy psychoanalyzing fictional characters.
@ometta73 жыл бұрын
@@jasonalbran376 Heath Ledger's Joker is a shit example of an anarchist. If anything, it seems more like his actions in the movie are specifically calculated to make authoritarianism seem justifiable. Anarchy isn't chaos, after all. At the very least it isn't meant to be. (In fact, that circle around the A in the common anarchy symbol is meant to be an O, and stand for the phrase "Anarchy is Order".) A true anarchist has to have a lot of faith that society won't just descend into chaos the minute the state isn't there to kick in people's doors and throw folks in prison. Whether you think that's realistic or not is immaterial, since the fact remains that such idealism and faith in humanity sounds about as far removed from the character of the Joker (and his edgelord fans) as one could imagine. If I had to call any villain in the Dark Knight trilogy an anarchist (or at least the closest possible thing to one), I'd probably pick Bane.

It's not really a joke, more of a metaphor
@SlashDashCrash6 жыл бұрын
the joke is that the first lunatic used his flashlight between the buildings and the second ones response wasn't that he would fall through the light-beam but rather the first guy will turn off the light when hes halfway across
@jizzer90006 жыл бұрын
imnotreal No, you completely misunderstood it. It's a metaphor for Joker and batman's relationship. Think of it this way. Batman and Joker both had bad days, leaving them in the asylum. Batman easily jumped across the gap to sanity because of his friends and family. But joker has no friends and family, he can't make the jump. The flashlight represents batman helping joker across, but joker thinks that batman would abandon Joker - so he declines it.
@ManOfTheMounten4 жыл бұрын
@@jizzer9000 Actually the real brilliance here is that the joke goes both ways. In this metaphor you can look at it either way , it maybe joker holding the light OR batman , the fun fact that it doesnt really change anythin. A year late responce XD

Not exactly. A lot of theories point to Batman snapping Joker’s neck out of shot in the last few panels, hence the stopping of the laughter.

My theory of why it is the "killing joke" is cause you can see a trucks headlights (being the beams of light in the joke) in the background and I like to think that after they are both so distracted by laughing at the joke( which explains their situations perfectly) they are both struck by the vehicle and both die. The punchline being both of their deaths at the same time.(but hey just my personal thoughts)
@Spider-Mate3 жыл бұрын
The lining of the lights make it look like it's coming from a truck. So your theory may not be so off.

This is in my humble opinion, one of the most tragic joker moments ever, if not the single most tragic. Joker has given up on himself, even when Batman wants to help him, joker doesn’t believe he is saveable, and refuses… it’s heart wrenching.
@RWSfan20249 ай бұрын
Even if Joker does accept, he will die. He’s did so many evil deeds that he already has many enemies that would kill Joker and only a small handful of people would forgive him.

I would have loved if batman actually killed joker but sadly he did not, if joker would have died it'd be so well done seeing as batman would finally realise that he has to kill joker due to the joke, as batman finally would realise that joker just in the end cannot trust batman and therefore be changed he'll always be unable to be treated and the only end for batman is to switch off the light and leave him therefore killing him

It's a shame, really. Joker, finally having a chance of redemption, having someone actually stick their hand to them to help them out, someone who has been in the same place before, refuses to accept. Because he can't trust anyone anymore. Whatever happened to him, whenever someone did try to help him, they backstabbed him. Over and over, every time he thinks he has someone to rely on, they abandon him, like an old used toy. It has happened so many times, that he doesn't even remember what was the first one. It has happened so many times, that he doesn't even trust Batman's kind and genuine words. And that was Jokers whole goal. That in this world, trust and loyalty are just a joke. That he isn't the only one who feels this way. That anyone can lose their sanity like him. So he knows that he isn't the only insane one in this insane world. But Batman completely throws that notion out the window. How can someone who lost their way in the dark, end up bringing others to the light? Why Batman chooses to save people, when time and time again, they make the same mistakes? Why couldn't he stay in the darkness like him? He's jealous that someone grew from the darkness while he faltered and stumbled over and over.

It's true all it takes is one bad day to activate change But it's not always one bad day to insanity. It can be one bad day that leads to the best things in your life later on in that bad week or it could be one bad day that sends you down a rabbit hole that leaves you cowering in fear. Life is a very strong force sometimes too strong for people but maybe the biggest test of life is just one bad day
