I'm joined by Dr. Neal Barnard, President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and Shauné Hayes to discuss Dr. Barnard's new book, The Power Foods Diet.
The Power Foods Diet is available here: a.co/d/9mYktmQ
I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Neal Barnard, MD and Shauné Hayes where we talked about some of the compelling weight loss principles, strategies and tips covered in 'The Power Foods Diet'. I personally have been following Dr. Barnard's work closely since my time transitioning to a more plant-based approach almost 10 years ago. It was a pleasure to have him join me for this interview. In particular, we discuss the 3 main concepts in 'The Power Foods Diet' and the research that supports them:
1) Appetite-taming
2) Calorie-trapping
2) Calorie-burning
Despite some minor issues with audio quality as explained in the introduction, I'm delighted with the helpful information shared by both Dr. Barnard and Shauné Hayes (Shauné has a remarkable weight loss story which she kindly shares with us) and I'm 100% confident that their insights will be valuable to you watching this.
You will find more information about Dr. Neal Barnard and Shauné Hayes below, as well as links to relevant social media and other resources. Once again, I wish to thank Dr. Barnard and Shauné for spending their Saturday morning with me (of all days!) to help bring us this excellent information. As always, please leave your comments and follow-up questions in the comments section down below. I look forward to seeing you in the next video on the 'Fit with Ryan Adams' KZbin channel.
Neal D. Barnard, MD, FACC, is an adjunct faculty member of the George Washington University School of Medicine and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, where he heads a research team investigating scientific issues in nutrition and health. His work revolutionized the dietary approach to type 2 diabetes; he now does the same for weight loss. Dr. Barnard is editor-in-chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a nutrition textbook made available to all U.S. medical students. He is also editor of Good Medicine, a magazine with a circulation of 150,000. He is the New York Times bestselling author of Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes, Power Foods for the Brain, The 21-Day Weight-Loss Kickstart, and most recently Your Body in Balance, among many others.

Shauné Hayes had always been a yo-yo dieter, eventually reaching 278 pounds. She suffered from hypertension, prediabetes, chronic arthritis, and other lifestyle-related conditions. In 2017, a health scare turned into a wake-up call for Shauné. She began working with a health coach and slowly transitioned to a whole food, plant-based diet. She lost 100 pounds and was able to stop taking five prescription medications. She made beans, legumes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables the centerpiece of her meals. “These power foods are really a remedy,” she said. “I’ve found a way to enjoy food I’ve always loved in a much healthier way. And I know it’s possible for other people to do the same.”

There are 2 causes of insulin resistance. 1. Too many carbs/processed carb, too much protein (also turns to carbs) 2. Eating any oil from a bottle and and oil in all package food/restaurants causes insulin resistance. Or too much fat. But ok to eat the uncured olive or the whole sunflower seed etc. The body has to do something with it and goes to the liver, heart and then the belly. (Called visceral fat). Dr fuhrman discusses this. And says do not add salt to the food because there is already plenty in the whole food. Salt is corrosive to the blood vessels and can cause hemorogic stroke. Asians have the most hemorogic strokes because their diet is so high in sodium. Usa wins for most is ischemic stroke (clot).

Sugar is the issue...not fat.

It's both, except the right kind of fat but not too much. My nutritionist reminded me serving sizes of nut butter etc. I was going over and have insulin resistance fatty liver and viseral fat on belly. Sugar in fruit is fine.

What an absolutely riveting and eye opening conversation. It is chock full of life changing information on how different foods impact our body weight, healthy functioning and best of all how fats impede our weight loss over multiple meals. I love the info on the power foods and spices that support co-creating a powerful metabolism❣️❣️ Thank you Ryan for being a fabulous moderator. Thank you Dr.Barnard and Chaunee for sharing the research and personal experiences. Wow - I’ll listen to this again and buy the book❣️❣️❣️🙏🏻😊 Blessings to all - Ingrid -

Legumes are a wonderful food group but they aren't mandatory. You can get the nutrients you'd get in legumes elsewhere. But the hope is, with frequent consumption of a SMALL amount of legumes over time, you'll be able to handle them better and better as your gut microbiome adapts.

It does if you don't like that kind of art. Adam Sanders was told he did not have any talent by a college professor. I personally, never thought Mick Jager could sing. I love the Stone's music though.
