JHC Fan It's a basic skill for those of us who learned before SMD components with written digits became dominant. The scale goes (0-9) black, brown, rainbow, grey, white. The rainbow is primary colors only (6 possibilities) and starts at red=2. The same color codes are/were used for other components.

Common neons in my experience were the NE-2 (wiires) and NE-51 (bayonet base, similar to a #47 tungsten lamp). I never saw screw-in ones of the size you showed here. There were some bigger screw-in types, like the NE-45 ferinstance, I had a tape recorder (early 1960s vintage?) that used a couple of those for level indicators. But the last time I looked they were absurdly expensive...

I was interested in those neon indicators, but they don't have a 120V version. :'(
@howdo51367 жыл бұрын
The strike voltage on most neons is about 90V so they will probably light on 120V. Possibly with some flicker? If Clive happens to see this comment maybe he could test them and let you know? If they are only cheap, it might be worth buying some to try regardless and you can always change the neons as they are the screw in type.
@themaritimegirl7 жыл бұрын
That was my first thought - just replacing the 230V neon lamps with 120V versions, but I can't find 120V screw-in neon lamps on eBay, either. -_-

They still light at 120V albeit at lower intensity, and should last for much longer than they would at 240V. I checked all the colours on my shaver socket and they looked OK. Not super bright, but still visibly lit. The best colours were orange and red.
@themaritimegirl7 жыл бұрын

Do you have a video or can you make one that explains how to translate/make choke/coil from henry units in schematics?
@johnfrancisdoe15637 жыл бұрын
Gregorius Soedharmo It's basically number of turns around the ferrite / iron core multiplied by a number from the core's data sheet. Thickness of wire is dictated by the current capacity. If the wire leaves the coil at the opposite side, there's a half turn involved, like 10½, 2½ or even just ½ turn. If the shape isn't filled to the brim with windings, the constant will be slightly different. Usually it's easier to just buy a finished coil/choke though, leaving the details to the factory.
@gregoriussoedharmo12067 жыл бұрын
I'll give that a go, thanks!

What is so neat about a relatively huge, heavy part that does no more than the job of a smaller one? We could say that makes it more durable but how much durability is needed from the housing BEHIND a panel? With it that big you'd think they would make it a switch too, with the option whether it's lit when the switch is closed or open, then if you don't need the switch you just don't wire anything to the switch contacts. As far as this design goes, I find capacitive dropper LED arrangements to be short lived, decreasing in brightness drastically within a few hundreds of hours. Granted the ones I built used generic Chinese LEDs which are highly subject to quality variations and yet they were single chip LEDs ran below half their rated current. I can't argue with CHEAP, except that when the lifespan is so low that it takes a greater value in labor to replace them, there was no real value in saving on the purchase cost.
@PaulSteMarie7 жыл бұрын
Stinky Cheese 22mm is a standard size for industrial control panels. You can get a full range of modular switches and indicator lights that all drop into 22mm holes. You can usually gang multiple switch blocks onto an actuator to make switches up to 4P3T or thereabouts. These Chinese ones are crap, but Eaton, Omron, ABB, etc all make full ranges of components in this form factor.
@johnfrancisdoe15637 жыл бұрын

The discharge resistor is usually used where a plug or lamp can be removed leaving the pins exposed. In an industrial application the indicator is hard wired in and may also be across a load that would shunt any residual charge.
