Earl is notorious for rubberbanding in this game. I had major issues with Ronnie as well. He crashed a couple of times, I had 1,7 km lead on him and he somehow managed to overtake me with crazy speed diffrence even though I wasn't making any major mistakes. These races were won by luck more often than skill. But rubberbanding works both ways. If you make a major mistake and get overtaken there is still a fairly large chance that you can win, unless it's like the last 10% of the race. In games without such rubberbanding...well, once you were in that situation you might as well restart the race here and now. You are not winning that, period. Even if the race had just begun.
@deoxysandmew21626 жыл бұрын
And the worst part?! Earl's car statistically doesn't even make any sense. He can catch up so easily as if he is going 200mph and his car can't even reach that kind of speed. If you compare it to fully buffed Byron's Porsche to his car, it's a whopping joke!
@TotallyNotASpy16 жыл бұрын
The PC version of the game had even worse rubberbanding, you really do need to have sheer luck in order to win most races. Even though you're doing over 260 mph you're still gonna see a little Golf or an IS200 just fly past you eventually...

My hang up was I got started on Midnight Club games. Open world, and get to the next checkpoint anyway or on any street you want. When I tried to play Need For Speed, they could pretend you were in a city, for example, but thanks to barriers and barrels and such, you were really on a premade track with a city 'background', or 'skin'. just couldn't get past it, and never felt inspired to play on rails like that.

When I played it back when I was a kid, I stopped at blacklist 3 because of rubber banding. I had a HUGE lead over Ronnie and in the dying moments of the race, he appeared out of fucking nowhere and won without me making any mistakes. Came back about 10 years later, played on PC instead of PS2, renamed the launch icon to "NeedForSpeedNoRubberBanding" and indeed there was no rubber banding. Only then I could drive being satisfied with my own skills. Until then, I was driving Gran Turismo and F1 games so the realism was my thing, only skills mattered, and rubber banding can suck my ass.

I've never in all the years of playing racing games, Most Wanted included, had issues with rubberbanding. The only game that I had difficulty winning in was Midnight Club Los Angeles for some reason. Every other game was a total breeze. I never noticed too much rubberbanding going on with AI in this game, although I noticed that some of the Blacklist rivals are coded so badly that they almost always crash and get stuck. Overall, it's still one of my favourite games and I think the police is really what makes it shine. Everything else was good too, but without police, this world would feel much emptier.

Not sure if a lot of people knew this, but you can fix the "rubber-banding" in the options. Find the option "catch up" and you can turn it off. Just to clarify - Earl's Sprint is the most egregious case of the Catch Up mechanic going nuts in a race and it's the primary reason why people hate Earl so much. It starts around 60% of the race done and for seemingly *no* reason, Earl will just catch up and most likely pass you by even if he's several seconds behind you. You just practically _need_ Earl to crash near the end of the race to win. It's the hardest race in the whole game, it's just dumb.

I think that downwards trend only started after Carbon TBH. To me Carbon is a more refined and more aesthetically pleasing NFS, because it brought back drifting, it had the Canyons (which would really get me excided) and they really managed to make the city look beautiful (I really dislike MW's yellowish, beige filter, it's really annoying and looks horrible). While yes, I think they haven't fleshed out the story as much and there wasn't as much content, I still think that it's better gameplay-wise. But MW is still very good if not better in general. I just wouldn't call Carbon a part of the downfall of NFS.

I recently got back into the NFS scene by playing Need for Speed: No Limits on mobile and it's a fun game. The cool thing is the BMW M3 GTR from Most Wanted is in that game too but it is a challenge to earn it.

It's a legit strategy in this game to not be in first till near the end. Rubber-banding works both ways to a certain extent and they slow down a bit, and like you said, they crash constantly. Once I got the corvette, my favorite car at that time, I really didn't feel the urge to play anymore. It's a chore due to the AI, both the racers and the cops, who get frustratingly dense towards the end.. They can literally overwhelm an entire road leaving you nowhere to go. I enjoyed Underground 2 the most because it was a good blend of everything that makes NFS fun. That said I grew up with Hot Pursuit and for some reason I'll always hold that one in super high regard. The tracks were fascinating, the cars were awesome, and the cops made each race intense. Sure it didn't have the open world, but it had so much style. As NFS got more trendy it got more intolerable, and my god the cutscenes in the newer ones are downright unwatchable.

It is artificial difficulty for an excuse of not being able to program competent ai. I recently started playing the game again, with all the graphics mod and extra options.... Well, the game is very easy when you get a hang of the driving mechanics, but the one point that ruins it are the drag races. Man, these are the most pathetic races ever introduced. Luckily they are mostly optional, but still, it almost ruined the experience for me. That and the pathetic motion blurr.

it'll be interesting when/if you get to NFS Prostreet, i want to see which way you sway on the game as a whole (or even stay on the fence). I know many wrote it off for not having the street racing culture of Underground or cops in MW but personally I have a soft spot for it and still play it to this day. I've really enjoyed your content very in depth in every game you review, keep it up :)

Yeah, Pro Street had an amazingly authentic "Track Day" feel to it. I also loved the Drag racing in it.
@lordeilluminati5 жыл бұрын
My only issue with it is that the local multiplayer (i didnt played online in this game) is kinda iffy to get around. You take so many time to create a track day and the other person gets bored, or the lack of visual representations, you only pick tracks and locations by name and it can be confusing to a new player. Even Gran Turismo and Forza which are simulation centric titles like Pro Street tries, are easier to pick and play with others

When you think about how this game took a few steps back from underground 2 in the way of customization and number of cars, it's actually kind of surprising that a lot of people regard this as the best game in the series, but then again what this game lacks in it's content, it does make up for in it's gameplay. Also, what Rog says at the start always made me think this was a sequel to underground 2

I wouldn't necessarily say that Rog's dialogue referencing the protagonist(s?) of the Underground games is hinting towards them being the same protagonist in Most Wanted and Carbon. I think it's simply Rog talking to the *player* rather than the protagonist, considering the two previous games were in the Underground, and now the player is playing a NFS game set in the daylight.

Just finished this game after not being able to fine the setup on my pc for a while. One of my favorite games that I found eventually. I loved playing it all the time. I remember playing it on my older brother's computer laptop when I was much younger. So playing it again and beating it was such a fun game to play again. I agree that a lot of the mechanics specifically for pc are a pain, but that's what made it a challenge for me. I never even knew about the rubber band system at all and always played at default settings. The pursuits were enjoyable all the time. I loved the cutscenes that would play whenever you were able to take a cop down using one of them. When your heat got to about 3+ was when it would get nerve racking. Hitting one wall accidently could cost you either money or a marker from a rival. The milestones were always a pain thought. Always throwing your car into the police to tag them, or even get extra bounty. I remember spending around 3+ hours trying to finished blacklist #3's milestones and it made me so mad. Worth it though. I really enjoyed customizing the cars though. The customization was my favorite part, being an artist and all. Something that pained me a lot though was that on PC I couldn't change a secondary color and I had no idea why. Upsetting. Overall, such a good game for being made in 05. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to try out an old game.

The best thing about this game, is the visual blur you get as you go faster, that experience although makes my adrenaline pumping, it also makes me scare, not even modern games can replicate the feel of speed of this game. And the pursuit system, although very frustrating when you get caught, but it's actually not that hard, listen carefully for certain callout of the cops and you get a advantage over them, just watch out for rhino unit and spikes, those would be the big problem. And making your car stay on higher pursuit level is actually a good thing, cuz that way you'll rank up your bounty at a faster pace.

just a few tips: -regarding the speedtrap races - don't go with his suggestion, once somebody finishes the race the points get deducted with each second untill you'll reach the finish line -don't use the speedbreaker, unless it will let you miss the spikes. It slows you down so much, that it's much better to bounce off the wall to continue racing -police cars are way lighter in the back, than in the front. Keep that in mind especially when it comes to roadblocks edit: couldn't agree more about the last statement in the video.
