For the record, Lisbeth was the first person to know that Kirito had the dual wielding skill - after forging Dark Repulsor, she asked why he needed another sword when he had one as badass as Elucidator, and that’s when he revealed the skill to her. This just went understated in the anime because it would have been a major spoiler for this episode - but it wasn’t in the LNs. This boss fight happened in Vol 1, whereas the Lisbeth arc where she forged the sword happened in Vol 2. If you’re reading the LNs in volume order, you would have already known about Kirito’s dual wielding prior to meeting Lisbeth, but that’s not the case in the anime.

@@outstraw9015 TBF there was a whole WN before the LN (not that I’ve read it) Vol 1 of the LN was written the way it was because that was the rules of the competition for which it was submitted (Dengeki Bunko). The work submitted must be a “closed work” - meaning the end of that story cannot start in the book submitted and end in another book. The publishing of the LN was one of the rewards of the competition. For the record, Vol 1 of 86 is written in the exact same way. FTR, I actually find Vol 1 as a standalone novel to be quite good, and as far as the stories being completely out of order, while annoying I can live with it because I have a chronological order listing of the entire saga. What I found annoying is as more and more story gets added to the universe - and not just novels, but anime original and movie original content - the more Vol 1 gets retconned.

Since it was brought up a couple times - here's explanation on the sword skills. Basically, you can have in your hands whatever you want and try to fight with it. If item is heavy and fast enough - it'll do the damage. Trick is - skills in this game have attached to them animation based Sword Skills, which take control of your body and move it at inhuman speed, thus making a whole ton of damage. They are followed by light effects and are unlocked as you practice the corresponding skill, such as one-handed-sword. If you switch to one-handed-axe - you will not be able to use one-handed-sword Sword Skills. To have animation based attack for 2 swords simultaneously - you need Kirito's Dual Wielding, but you can still use them without it. Although it should be noted that your stats have to allow for you to actually hold two heavy pieces of metal and wield them. Another important part is player input. Animation based attacks allow small deviations, for example by moving the body for extra momentum or precision where it doesn't interfere with animation. Experienced players can execute Sword Skills with better efficiency. Another - while animations are performed at inhuman speeds - it doesn't mean they are at the speed limit - virtual bodies take commands from the brain and can perform them as fast as commands are given, outside the limitations of physical world. This means, you can either outperform the Sword Skill and help the animation to be done even faster, or even perform the same set of motions as animation but without the Sword Skill, although it would take lots of practice in both cases. The first option - is what Kirito did in the boss fight, thus the exhaustion he felt.

So Dual Wielding is a Skill exclusive to Kirito for reasons that will be explained in the coming episodes, it allows for the access of the 16 hit combo "Starburst Stream" and another ability or two I think? But yes, its possible for people to equip 2 Weapons but it isn't practical as Skills are tied to only 1 weapon. (Its not really explained later so ill just detail it now and reference a 'side story' character to explain it that doesn't appear in the anime) So there is a girl who was inspired by Kirito in a side story that sadly never shows up in the anime, she ends up equipping 2 Swords but doesn't have access to the Dual Wielding Skill, so to "Simulate" it, she utilizes 1 Handed Sword Skills with both weapons, not as effective as the Dual Wielding Skill Kirito has, but its a possibility, just not many ever really thought of it I believe?

Also, Kirito estimates that there are slightly more than twenty techniques to the Dual Blades skill. However, that is known at this time only - Star Burst Stream (16-hit combo attack, like in the video) - Cross Block (Defensive Skill, This skill is used to block Gleam Eye's attacks) - Double Circular (2-hit combo attack) - The Eclipse (27-hit combo)

I think animators combined the other abilities of Dual Wielding skill to make a round off around 50. Starburst Stream with 16 hit,Eclipse with 27 hit,a two hit striking combo and some others.

Gleam Eyes is the most fun kind of boss, which in a death game would make him the most terrifying: he's just a giant dps check. No phases, no focusing. He just deals damage and takes damage. And in literally any other kind of game, that would be my jam all day long. But not in Aincrad.

Considering that a parent of one of the AW characters has been introduced in SAO Unital Ring (not 100% confirmed, but name, description, and other factors like the company the grandfather works for all match up), plus the use of the I system and a FL in the Imperial Palace in AW, it's probably more than just a reference. It looks very much like AW and SAO are interconnected.

Plus early on people said Reki said they weren't connected (I've never seen a quote from him on that so I don't know). But I was referring strictly to the LNs and not the animes in this case. There was also a non-canon short story where Kirito and Haru met in BB. As well as the SAO/AW video game.

You have to remember (explained in the first episode when he was tutoring Klein) that the game attacks works with "skills" (when the weapon lighten up). Anybody could use 2 swords, but they won't be able to trigger skill attacks that way unless they have the dual wielding skill suited for making attack with those (like the Starbust Stream he used during the fight).

Yeah in the LN the aincrad liberation army took over the lower floors and kinda act like a military/ police force. They took over in the chaos So if you wanted to stay in the town of beginnings they would basically force you to join their ranks or imprison you

In the novels Kirito explains how using sword skills is way more effective than just attacking yourself with your weapons. You can absolutely equip 2 swords at the same time. But you can only use sword skills with both weapons at the same time, if you have the dual wielding skill. So without this skill, using 2 swords is just not effecive enough. Using 2 handed weapons or a shield is way better. And dual wielding is something very special in SAO. That will be explained in the next episodes.

So according to the novel, The Gleam Eyes had about two thirds of his HP when they got into the room. That means that even accounting for the damage Asuna and Klein did, Kirito basically took down at least half the boss' health bar by himself, and the fight lasted less than a minute.

the dual wielding skill works differently than you think, everyone can equip what they want, so an axe or even a mace in each hand, a sword in each hand. However your loadout becomes "irregular" which locks your use of sword skills into just a single weapon, the skill "dual wielding" allows the user to use sword skills with both weapons simultaneously.

You can use two sword at the same time but you can’t deal the huge amounts of damage without the skill. Dual Wielding is a series of two sword skill, there are various of animation of the skill You don't actually need the skill to use 2 sword, you only need the skill to deal enough damage to 1 shot the boss

I'll try to explain using the vita game as reference, i think its pretty accurate. There are different kinds of weapons, dagger(1 handed) spear(2 handed) rapier (1 handed which asuna uses) long sword(2 handed klien uses) mace(1 handed) shield (1 handed) also 1 handed sword which kirito uses and others maybe cant remember. All weapons have different sword skills( you see activates when their weapon glows). You can equip 2 one handed weapon yes but you can only activate its sword skill one at a time so instead of activating one skill from 1 sword then activating another skill with the other is possible its not practical, so instead you can equip shield to boost your def(gotta say shields are very useful in the game). Here comes dual-wielding, it is categorized under weapon types and has exclusive skills which are combo based and dish alot of damage with no guard(shield) trade off. Which you can remember asuna points out in the episode. Yes you can equip 2 swords but not very practical considering doesnt give you access to dual wield sword skills.

Long story short anyone can use two swords but kirito is the only one that has a skill involving both swords at the same time, every other skill works on one sword. Ex: skill one on the right sword and skill two on the left sword. But kirito using starburst stream means one skill for both swords. i think thats how it works.

I believe you can use two swords or even two peices of wood but the problem would be you have no power going to the second wep, they arent just learning skills and getting better the same way you would irl, they're gaining invisible stats that give them super powers inna sense and acquiring super powered attacks that can only be used with certain items and conditions met, and without those conditions met they would be like us trying to fight those monsters, so essentially your second wep would be dead weight, but kiriko has powers that allow him to use those skills through both swords making it an actual viable option for him.

Dual wielding is a massive buff in games after all since you will have the stats of both of your weapons added to your main stat. Well most games, dps in games like Skyrim if I remember correctly will depend on which weapon you use to hit the enemy.

In D&D-esque systems (Pathfinder, Pillars of Eternity, Baldur's Gate, etc) dual wielding usually means trading accuracy for extra attacks. More story-inclined systems like VtM and Cypher (seen in Torment: Tides of Numenera) either consider dual-wielding as using a peculiar two-handed weapon or provide negligible bonuses. What you describe is a "stat-based" approach when equipment on a virtual doll influences its stats which then are considered in interactions regardless of where they came from; it's a property of relatively simple systems (RPGMaker uses that by default, for example).

Kirito can't equip heavier armor because of the weight of two swords. So, he's basically a glass cannon, a rather extreme thing for a game with real death, but the DPS hasn't failed him so far 😅

let me explain it to you, the skill "Starburst Stream" is the skill that only Kirito have, because it is given to the person with the highest speed in the game, the light on people weapons are the skills themself, but only Kirito has skill that can light both of his weapon at the same time, and skill "Starburst Stream" give Kirito unlimited combo with the "light weapon"... like Asune doing with her 4 streak combo skill. It starts at 15 combo. In the later seasons Kirito reaches unlimited hope it help to understand

Anyone better versed in sao correct me if im wrong, but i belive the "fifty hit combo" was a translation mistake...im pretty sure that it was a "fifteen-hit combo"... The fifteen-hits were consistantly referred to in future seasons, manga/light novels and games. But still, considering that the highest "normal" skills are in the single digit area, it's still one hell of a skill... Also, it wouldn't be so far off for the translation your watching to have some mistakes in it...even on the same website, there can be multiple diffrent translations if they have multiple "watch-servers"...

The trick is that Agil was reading the news article which exaggerated everything to extreme - yes, news said it was 50 hit combo, but it was nonsense Agil laughed about and Kirito said isn't true. Same as news said about army squad being annihilated, while only 3 of them actually died.

So Dual Wielding is Kirito exclusive. Anyone can equip 2 swords but you can only use skills from one sword at a time. It would be like choosing to take a second rifle over bullet proof armor. In practicalities, body armor is the better choice over a second rifle. Kirito however, can use skills from both swords at the same time.

This is an episode that the Abridged called out with good reason. The game gave them ONE safety net system to keep them alive, crystals. Having places where those crystals don't work, and especially disabling them in a BOSS ROOM where they are the most needed is just actively trying to wipe your playerbase. This is possibly the worst design decision I have ever seen in a video game.

You could use 2 Swords anyway, but there are Skills designed around DW that you can only use when you got the DW-Skill and some stat boni too. In the Books it is stated, that a normal hit with a weapon, does nearly nothing and therefore you need to use skills to do damage, to use skills you need to do a specific pose or starting motion, after using a skill you get locked for a short amount of time, where you can't move. Therefore a second sword is pretty useless, for more offence you could go to a speedy sword like the rapier in the mainhand and nothing in the offhand, for more defence you go sword+shield.

It's slightly more complicated - the problem of a simple hit isn't that it's not a sword skill, but that the speed at which you hit is usually way lower. If one trains a lot - can do the similar damage to the swordskill without using it, but very few can actually achieve this even after years of practice

I will say that the duel wielding skill is a little confusing on why you need it to wield two swords. We have seen Kirito hold two swords when he visited Liz’s shop, when he held his sword and the one she made(unless he had the skill around that time, but Liz wasn’t surprised so idk). So maybe the game just makes it so you can’t actively be swinging two swords?

Sword Skills are animation based, with light effects and everything. To trigger a set of motions for two swords simultaneously - you need the dual wielding skill. But to use two swords in both hands - not. It's just impractical, as in Elden Ring you can do it, but have to sacrifice some armor for weight limit - same here, Kirito can only use a very light armor.
