Messages like this are what men need now more than ever. More and more of us are confounded and infuriated by what our broken society has told us about ourselves. Resist the negativity and know yourself. Know that you are a good person doing your best with what you have, and that despite what feminists say, all the world's problems are not your goddamn fault. I look forward to more content like this, Neel. Keep it up! This shit is reaching critical mass, and the hippocrates can't ignore it anymore.

Jesus Neel, that opening hit home a bit to hard mate, I just knocked off work lol. Brilliantly said mate, you are growing daily in my eyes. How bad is society when Comedians give the most sensible conversations, no offence intended.
@dougieboxell65052 жыл бұрын
I dont think that reflects badly on society at all. Some comedians are highly intelligent, no exception here with Neel. And they have a far reach and great influence, once again, no exception with Neel. Not to say every comedian should be giving sensible advice, or any advice, but I think it's absolutely a good thing that some do, and do it well.

@@dougieboxell6505 Guys, I never said it was a bad thing. Just saying when the only voice of reason come from comedians then society is F'd. Comedians are the only ones who can really go against the narrative and that is allowed because it can be wiped away with "its just for laughs". And if you don't think that is bad then society is definitely F'd.

This is what I've felt for a long time - that there is no understanding of men's struggles on their own terms, rather than through the lens of women. In this society, a man can either deny his own masculinity to be a moral person, or he can embrace his masculinity but be immoral and destructive. We never hear of the third way where one's masculinity is embraced and channelled into enlightened ends, rather than denied or channelled into destructive ends.

As a woman I realize there's a lot about the male perspective I don't understand and I want to listen. This video is really inspiring to me to encourage my male friends, as I realize that so many men I know have jobs and relationships as their whole life, and all the people I know who have committed suicide are men. Many men I know are good at listening, but don't know how to talk about themselves as individuals, so I find your advice really fascinating!

That's is such a great and humble perspective to take! While trying to fix someone is NEVER a positive thing, having empathy and allowing your male friends to feel comfortable in their own being and sense of masculinity will do the world of good! There's good and bad people in every walk of life, but treating normal male qualities as shameful or bad can do so much damage to men's opinion of themselves, and that is a root cause of so many ailments I hope society develops to the point where it's normal to be empathetic to EVERY living thing

I think a lot of guys would benefit from a better understanding what value men bring to relationships. I think a lot of them just think they are supposed to be more like women. We have our strengths and they are never allowed to be mentioned in mainstream society. In fact by not acknowledging positive male value they have greatly contributed to the decline in society primarily with treating fathers as optional accessories in a kids life.

I grew up with 2 awesome brothers and a wonderful father who just encouraged us all - and a mother did as well. I love men - i feel for you - it’s a horrible situation. Men always step up to the plate when they feel they want to or encouraged. So it’s up to us women to encourage our men to do so. They are MEN and really girls, we love them and everything about them xxx 💕 The other point is I believe women aren’t showing in female way that we love men to be strong but loyal.

This so much, particularly "it’s up to us women to encourage our men to do so" - There was definitely a lot of wisdom in the idea of the man being more of the leader or in charge while the woman is his advisor. I very highly recommend a book called King, warrior, magician, lover. It's a book that tries to identify what exactly masculinity is supposed to be at its best, and uses character archetypes from stories to do so. I honestly got a lot out of it, and I reckon it (and the female version of the same archetypes) would be a mad topic on the Sex Cells pod.
@shootatsquare2 жыл бұрын
Finally, I hear someone explain it well. These have also been my findings after experiencing some suffering and searching to find my purpose as a man. Anytime someone espouses empathy around a cause, yet refuses to extend their empathy to the people who don't fit into their narrow idea of the victim, they only cause more suffering. Also, the go to response to mens' suicide being so high, of explaining it as a cause of men not being more vunerable about their emotions is not only a massive over simplification but it also serves as a way of victim blaming, and thus, freeing themselves of any obligation or critique of how they/sociey contributes. Ironically, many if the same people who espouse that perspective, in another breath find the people who dismiss racist inequality as being entirely down to personal responaibilty, as being unempathetic and narrow minded. These issues are complex, and without universal empathy, we don't find the most universally just solutions.

I think the key is for that 3rd meaningful purpose to be internal, and then for that to be the primary purpose. No matter what, I can always find something I can do well, and can become very good at. And when I do become very good at it, that will benefit me tremendously, and also impose a tremendous net benefit to the wider society and planet. I would call this personal responsibility. As someone who figuratively had the gun to his head due to relationship issues (and other reasons, certainly financial hardship contributing) and more than figuratively attempted the great soduko, I feel compelled to spread this message as far as I can, and to live it myself as much as possible, as best as I can. I've given up on trying to resolve this. I'm not a nihilist, or a misogynist. I'm a pragmatist. Its society's fault for making nihilism or misogyny a pragmatic ideology. I wholeheartedly believe in the fundamental capability of women to be strong independent critical thinkers capable of doing anything a man can do but find it ironic when I'm deemed misogynist for expecting women to meet that bar they're perfectly capable of reaching instead of relying on a cavalcade of simps that meet their every whim rather than experience any kind of personal growth. I'm not an incel. I have plenty of sexual opportunities. I just don't choose to sacrifice my personal beliefs or prostrate to pursue them. I know that limits my prospects, and thats fine. Everyone has their filters. I am not angry, despite being pinholed into anger because that's the only emotion they understand. I chose this path, the path less traveled. I know its going to be harder for me, that its going to get me into more conflict and I'm always going to be the straw man for someone who doesn't care enough to see the nuance in my perspective. Because a wise man once said; "You cannot shirk this to be a man. To decide against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country let men label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation may decide what is right and that way be the right way according to your convictions of what is right, hold your head high. You have nothing to be ashamed of." This is what truly being a man means to me.

Men have to be careful not to use the present difficulties as an excuse to abdicate their responsibility. A truly stoic attitude takes on all of the difficulties that one finds presented to them, and uses them as an opportunity to strengthen oneself. It is not enough to point out that a very real problem exists, nor to use that very real problem as a justification to resign oneself to an epicurean or hedonistic life. A personal revolt against the problem is required, and to take on as much responsibility as one can bear. A culture of 'adequate masculinity' (as you put it Neel) is an ideal that works really well, but ultimately it is up to individual men (not women, and certainly not the collective) to take on the responsibility to meet this ideal. I do have to question this idea about generating meaning. How does one do this when we have separated ourselves from our history, the natural world, our ancestral culture, religious beliefs, our families and even our own bodies? Isn't the idea of forging one's own identity part of the problem? Doesn't the search for the real 'authentic' self contribute to the very anxiety that leads people to prefer porn and videogames over real relationships, and meaningful work?

Men need a purpose, yes. But they do not need that purpose to be handed to them, and for that matter that course of action would be counter-productive. So what men *really* need is guidance on how to find their own purpose. A lot of schools (at least in the US) are not designed for this purpose but rather are at odds with it. They teach fact regurgitation, process emulation, and paraphrasing. Those might have been useful for factory workers, but they are not for finding your purpose, nor for a country with a dramatically smaller number of factories and workers to staff them.

Hi neel I met you at your show years ago! Job loss is pretty inevitable in our current capitalistic society, (I work contract to contract so I job hop multiple times a year) not to mention skyrocketing house prices. Dating is awful too, I’ve been single my entire life. You are not alone in that feeling, however I am a woman (who has also been cancelled online) so these issues are universal to all people imo. To feel needed I have my dog for that lol, and channel that energy to family and friends and when the world opens, travelling. I think the pandemic has done a heavy blow to us too, especially lockdown we are more divided than ever. Trying therapy is good too, if you check up at the doctor for your physical body so you should for your mental health. Addressing suicide I think defs have a strong support system, I also hate how society puts so much emphasis on jobs and relationships like damn let us be, we are all trying. But also in the past marriage was a financial transaction and now women have their own money so now they’re searching for the true love everyone talks about that is actually super rare. I understand you hate that we have the ick, but with all the news of cheating, rape, financial, mental ,physical parental abuse, murder, gaslighting, rejection, doing all the chores and childcare and working at once, etc a lot of women don’t want to take that risk for someone they aren’t sure about. Hope this cleared things up
@zoes87852 жыл бұрын
I don't think this video was meant to be an attack on the female perspective on masculinity but instead a male perspective on mens mental health, as a lot of the discussion around mental health in general is from a female perspective (as women tend to approach things emotionally). Most of the issues talked about are universal but this is the first video i've seen about these issues from a male perspective, relating to healthy masculinity (as opposed to repressing masculinity to try to be more progressive). This video was eye-opening for me as a woman and it sounds like you are discrediting his point and continuing to push these solutions which as he discussed, are more helpful for women than men (very broadly speaking). of course, these can be extremely helpful but I think his point is more that having a healthy relationship with masculinity, finding a purpose that is intrinsic, will help men in preventing mental health issues.
@zoes87852 жыл бұрын
(also i think that the ick refers only to silly little turn-offs and so only happens when you don't actually love the person, maybe there's a better name for the serious red flags and warning signs that you are referring to)

Tell you what makes me resentful as a man - how Australia has collectively thrown out the sense that people are responsible for caring for their communities and earning a productive wage to invest in others, and instead made employment and responsibility dependent on accepting a state-peddled vaccine that no one is allowed to question or talk openly about. The past two years in Melbourne have destroyed my sense of responsibility and duty to my community, and now I only get it back because I’ve been vaccinated? But T&Cs still apply? At this point I am genuinely struggling to see any good left in society that is worth fighting for. I’d feel less resentment if I knew an acknowledgment of wrong and an apology would one day come, but I doubt it’ll ever cross their lips

Fantastic Video Neel! Things missing in today's education that leads to this... Parents especially, take note! 1. Critical Thinking: Which is enhanced when one is taught how to be curious about opposing or different views, how to decipher them, and if they objectively make sense how to include them in your own life and help your family and friends with them as well. 2. Emotional regulation: when taught and understood properly half of these problems just vanish and one tends to build focus in life, hard to to with kids who have ADHD or other a-neurotipical condition, but a company of people who are good at emotional regulation actually helps. 3. Difference between needs, wants, fact, fiction, truth, assumptions, and theories is understood, and encouraged... 4. When one is taught to be a strong person, mentally and physically as much as they can be... Not just that but how to be antifragile as a family, friends, and community... which then translates to bigger and bigger groups. 5. All of the above is taught by example... Not just telling, but showing. And this is not just for kids, if you're an adult join a group that helps you do that. I for one want to start one. And Neel, if you'd like to join, and all the others who want to better themselves, all are invited and welcomed.
