I hope we can have your around the community more often and not let one bad Apple ruin it for you. There are so so so many great people and sub-communities within this hobby. The great characters massively outweigh the bad ones. Hopefully we inspire you to get a new shiny knife soon 😊

Your bad experience may have saved others from going down the same road. Alien didn't handle that situation as best as he could have but he did make it right in the end with the refund. Seems like he has to head back to the drawing board to iron out the details of his knife making process. And there are really fine people in the knife community. I liken it to a church in the sense that the community really is a community. Most everyone in the hobby is respectful, kind, generous and good-natured. As it grows the community is bound to attract some bad actors, but by and large most everyone follows an unspoken rule to treat each other with respect and compassion. Glad you're still around though. If you're ever bored on a Wednesday or Saturday night stop by one of the Neeves lives. Usually for the first hour we talk knives and then the second hour is a short cologne review, a story about Jerad's past and then anything goes after that point. The other people in the chat bring their own benevolent chaos into the mix too. If you want to network a bit more into the community its one of the best places to do so is all I am saying.

Man - if I could sub, I’d sub again. Jerad and Kara - you guys are quickly becoming my primary resource for everything regarding knives. Now, I used to just refer to you for technical specs and references for sharpening tips and best-practice. That’s not the case anymore. Jerad, your opinions are logical and thorough. You’re both considerate and understanding, as you showed humility in the Alien Knives section of this video, but you don’t sugar-coat and you certainly don’t hide your true opinion. *virtual handshake* Kara, the research you performed on Huusk was phenomenal, and well informed. You considered things I never even thought about, and you exude reliability and “with-itness” in your connections with finding it on cheap websites and Huusk’s drop-shipping model. @@thermaltoyzngear3310 Cedric has only tested low performance m390. The best m390 he has tested has been tawain Spyderco at 60rc. Spyderco Golden USA has shown they have even better performance at 60rc and go up to 62rc. Cedric has also not tested Reates secondary hardening m390 that has harder carbides in the microstructure. So I wouldn't base your opinions on it. Heck his d2 testing makes it look better than it actually is. Rope cut testing also varies depending on behind the edge thickness but he doesnt include those numbers. I enjoy the tests and the data he has, but at least I understand the bigger picture and can extrapolate with bte, heat treat protocols involved and comparison to the cardboard cut testers. If he has knives that are thinner behind the edge the numbers go way up. So your not testing the heat treat at that point. The knife is using bte thickness as a crutch to get higher numbers. Check out his d2 test with 4 knives. Dozier d2 did better despite being thicker behind the edge and lower hardness. But it had a better microstructure due to a proper heat treat. Something you dont notice off the cuff with rope cut testing. This is why cardboard testing is extremely important, behind the edge thickness matters less in these tests and their testing the actual microstructure of the heat treat.

When I am fortunate enough to get a new knife seen on your channel ( rarely ever handled in person) I have NEVER made a purchase I regretted because the knife was always accurately represented by your review. Last I find it saddening that it has become much more common that so many people attack people with integrity and high moral character which from content I consider you and Kara to be. The content of this video is why I’ll keep watching this channel. It’s hard to call out companies that sponsor or could affect your bottom line. And in doing so and sharing with the community, practices or instances of deception in terms of product or manufacturing. It’s a heads up for folks who aren’t as well versed in how companies in this hobby can behave at times. There’s another channel that I’ll never bother with ever again due to the exact opposite of their behavior towards a custom maker that was being deceptive about their product because the channel was “friendly” with them and didn’t want to burn bridges. Meanwhile they were lying to customers about blade steel and country of origin, marketing and charging a premium for their products. Cheers to Jared and the research department. Great stuff ❤❤

Thank you for telling the truth. We unfortunately live in times where "bad things" (the truth) are to be covered up so no one knows. It's refreshing to see someone out here that still tells the truth about something that people spend money on. It's always the best policy to tell the truth to customers, and more companies need to start doing this. We all understand there may be potential issues with manufactured goods, however we also expect those problems to be corrected or made right in some way. It's always a real disappointment when a manufacturer tries to dodge taking care of a customer(Yes Hogue I'm talking about you who wouldn't admit to anything being wrong with your Magnacut and you who would not replace a soft blade on my knife). As a customer and buyer of knives, every penny I spend is taken seriously and those we buy from should also be serious when we have problems. Thanks again for being brave enough to tell the truth Jerad. And Kara, thank you too.

My experience with the one MTech I own is just the opposite of yours. I have their Trailmaster look-alike. When I say 'just the opposite' I mean that thing has quite possibly the hardest steel I have ever experienced with a knife. Whetstones? Did nothing. Sandpaper? Barely scratched it. I had to take a flat file to it and it still took over an hour to do what I wanted (the factory edge wasn't very sharp so I wanted to convex the secoolndary bevel/edge since I had to sharpen it, anyway). After the file I took sandpaper to it, again, then back to the whetstones then to steel and a strop. I got that thing shaving sharp. I have used it to chop wrist thick maple limbs and have beat on it pretty hard. It isn't a main use knife but it does get thrashed on from time to time and so far I haven't needed to resharpen it or, really, even hone it. It hasn't chipped or anything with my use, either. I guess that is the upside to ridiculously hard steel. I don't know if they still make that model or if they do I don't know if the steel is the same because I have had mine for probably eight or ten years. Do I recommend their priducts? If it will be someone's main or only knife, no. If they want a cheap knife to do things they wouldn't do with their main knife or any, nicer knife, maybe - depending on the model and the price.

I have three known brands that I now tend to avoid. MTech is the only one that I have personally experienced from your list. They are inexpensive beater knives/parts to cannibalize/ throw aways. Gerber, whose quality declined early 90s and I no longer trust after some catastrophic failures. Cold Steel, hit or miss on quality and design flaws, shady marketing, and poor customer service. I will mention that I bought a cheap gas station keychain knife (a folding box cutter) that was so useful, durable, and convenient that it became one of my favorite "travel" knives.

With respect to knives being manufactured with the wrong steel, shouldn’t the manufacturer be doing a PMI before manufacturing the knives and putting them on the shelf. Very poor quality control on the part of the manufacturer, or he was aware of the material being used and was trying to pull one over on his customers.

Great presentation. Informative, accurate, interesting. A few years ago, I traded a beat up Boy scout knife ( '70s ), for a no name large folding Karambit. I had valued the B.S. knife at $30. I'm a dealer and was extremely busy. You can imagine when I found out it was a $5 M tech. It had been a great defense piece. Good balance, ball bearing action, 3 1/2 inch curved blade, and a large finger hole at base. Makes it easy to reverse grips. It was sharp enough. After watching your video, I proceeded to sharpen it. No luck. I will try again with other sharpeners and let you know If I have any luck. Thanks for the info Bob

Love that Husk effectively includes "warning: our knives are dogshit" in their terms and conditions. And yes they're definitely dropshipped, at one point these knives were being sold and advertised under a variety of different names, branded as Serbian or Norwegian or whatever. These dropshipping scams make my blood boil. There are even worse examples than this, of atrocious cheap knives being bought off Alibaba and marked up 10-100x. Most include hilarious 50+% off deals. Feel bad for the folks getting suckered in by the marketing guff.

The worst knife steel I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with was from a local “Custom” knife maker. I was trying to help him out and be a blessing to him, we went to church together so I said sure, I will buy a couple knives to help you get on your feet. Biggest mistake I have ever made, he is shady, his knives were complete junk, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d swear the Damascus he used come from Iran…. Pure scrape, same as him! To this day it put a bad taste in my mouth for Damascus and I refuse to own any! I don’t care who makes it…

@@tacticalcenter8658 Ganzo isn't really a respectable company but they are often a "gateway" for people entering into the knife collecting hobby. Say what you will about them stealing designs since it is true, but for people who would scoff at shelling out $100+ for a knife Ganzo can show those people what a quality designed knife can perform like. I think when Neeves Knives was starting out they showcased Ganzo knives. Jerad doesn't really buy them anymore these days because of the stolen designs but he won't deny that he showcased them when the channel was young and he didn't have a revenue stream to speak of yet.

Bottomline is : everybody wants only your money. And I include also companies like Spiderco in this. Once I had a Native Salt, the H2 steel was supposed to be rust free, they had also a video, where they had a knife with this steel in highly concentrated salt water, took it out and it looked like fresh out of the box. I took mine 3 times diving, it started to develop superficial rust stains, although I cleaned it with fish water after diving and dried it with compressed air. I sent the pictures to Spyderco, and they played it down. So basically don't trust anybody, go with the brands you had good experiences so far, like Buck .

I'd avoid Sandrin Knives, at least the Monza knife series. My Ti version has an internal stop pin that is cut to shit by the blade closing or in the closed position. Depending on the pin's orientation, my tweeked blade would stick up proud of the handle in all but one orientation. I took pics and sent it in for service. Their CS simply denied the pin issue was even happening, they reground the blade and even though we talked about replacing the blade ($100 + shipping) they didn't, shipped the knife back then has ghosted me ever since. I sent them several pics of the pin and and how it affects the closed blade.

I can agree with most of what you have said. having Kara do some research, and presenting what she found was a great idea, she put it together in an easily understandable format. I have done a bit of research into Huusk as well, and found them to be at best shady as hell and at worst an apparent intentional rip off. I don't know if you have ever watched any of my videos on knives, but I am a knife guy from well before you were born, and I can tell pretty quickly if the construction of the knife is something I can trust. I have held a few MTech knives over the years, and would say "gas station" and "Mall ninja" are extremely accurate descriptions of them and many more brands that fall into that level of poor quality. they are, for all intents and purposes all glitz no go. I would add one category to your list. companies that seem to do nothing but knock offs of other designs.

I said that, however if the issue was well known and sold for over a year without telling the buyers what does that say about the company? I personally bought a couple to find out it was not the steel advertised and that was well after they were aware. Yet no disclaimer or anything then they said they fixed the issue and that they were safe to purchase when in reality they were not and people again bought knives that were still not ad advertised, awesome that now after being caught so many times and getting kick back that now they are going to sell you the product as advertised. I don't mind issues I look at what was done about it. Do you think it would have been changed if not for so many youtube videos with actual tests that proved what was going on? Or would they still be selling you crap since you don't know and can't confirm? I would rather deal with one of the many companies that care about the products they are selling
