Jesus, I had no idea the second quest was that hardcore! I also never knew about it as a kid, in fact, I didn't even find out about it until well into my 30's. Don't know how or why it took me so long to realize it existed lol... Seriously though, this was fantastic. Wes, you deserve more brother. This was masterfully done and I can tell you upped your game yet again to put this together. Great that you teamed up with Hungry Goriya too as it was nice to hear both of your perspectives on things. I honestly didn't want this video to end and was sad when the "End of Part One" banner popped up. I'll be looking forward to part 2!

@NefariousWes5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, man! Every time someone says, "I didn't want it to end", I feel kinda bad, but then remind myself that leaving people wanting more is a good thing. This is Zelda, so anything less than hard work and a full effort would be unacceptable. I spent a LOT of time on the audio editing alone! And one of the clips in the video is fake. I made it myself, ha ha. I had the footage that I needed -- from a DIFFERENT part of the game. I made it look like it legit happened when I showed the footage. Can't even tell. Took an hour to put that five second clip together, ha ha. Watching Hungry Goriya stream the second quest for her first time several months ago finally encouraged me to do this project, and since she had just gone through it, and loves Zelda as much as I do, she was perfect for helping me present this. And she was a treat to work with! Look for part two soon!

I remember waking up one morning as a kid, having had the sudden thought about walking through the level 4 triforce wall. I *knew* some enabling item must exist in the level, because you couldn't get anywhere else without it. Some dream or possibly a nightmare led me to it. I rushed to my console quietly (I wasn't allowed to play games on sunday) and almost screamed in happiness when links awkward little sprite slipped through the wall.

The position Link warps to on the map depends on which way Link plays the magic whistle's music: * When Link faces north/east, he warps forward one dungeon entrance. * When Link faces south/west, he warps backward one dungeon entrance.

I can’t recall how we discovered how to walk through the wall. May have been a Nintendo Power magazine or playground friend. In any case, I solved the first two dungeons in the second quest, without getting the flute from level 2. Obviously, I found level 4 next, since the flute is required for level 3. I am pretty sure you can “finish” level 4 without walking through a wall, but you end up missing the raft. I also struggled with the first quest level 7 because 7-year old me didn’t think you would be able to enter a space that wasn’t on the map (the first time you can do this is level 4, but that’s optional and only for rupees).

I have already told you quite a while ago how this game helped me learn English and that it took two years renting it at the video store as it wasn't available to buy until 1995 here in Brazil (unless via importation which was really expensive) . If there was a time machine I would tell my 12-13 year-older self to draw the freaking map! Seriously, maybe it took me so long for the simple fact that I couldn't locate the second dungeon and it never occured to me to sketch things down to help me. I found teh ZELDa naming trick just out of curiosity, if the name of the game is "Zelda" and the hero is called "Link" what would happen if I put the names Link and Zelda? And voilà, so I managed to play both quests and once I beat the first one it took me two or three days to finish trhe second one. I saw somewhere here on youtube that the walkthrough wall in the second dungeon of the second quest was guesswork, put the way the walls are lined out is a giveaway to me and I found it pretty easy to find.

Zelda fan since 1987 here. Just ran across this video, enjoyed it very much, but I'm surprised that the following were not discussed: - That swastika is an ancient symbol called a manji in Japanese and in the old player guides, from the Chinese character "wanzi." On old Asian maps, the symbol marked the location of a Bhuddist temple. Other cultures and religions have the same or similar symbols, facing right and left, in their art and spiritual scriptures. The term "swastika" itself comes from Sanskrit, "svástika." It didn't get co-opted for hateful purposes until just before the first World War. - There were four ways to recover from a Red Bubble hit, not just one: Touching a Blue Bubble, drinking Water of Life, touching a Triforce piece, and visiting a fairy fountain. Obviously, the impracticality of the last two is another demonstration of the sadism of the developers.
@NefariousWes4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I put a lot of work and heart into this one. I could've mentioned the manji, but it's more of my style to make a joke, and the opportunity was just too good to pass up, hence the GWAR reference. And I either forgot or simply didn't know about the other methods of recovering your sword from the Red Bubbles. I even looked it up when we were writing the script and didn't come across that info.

Did you do some stealth editing with the, "Leave your life, or money?" part? I didn't notice it the first time around, but it caught my eye on round two. Great idea to bring along Hungry Goriya. She's super cool and definitely knows what she's talking about. Please tell her I enjoyed her segments! The animating goriya was too funny. The visuals looked sharp on my screen. You're killing it with the editing as always. All the little touches and add-ons make your videos stand above the rest. It's harder and harder to find quality stuff on KZbin, so thanks for all the effort you put in. Ignition was a great album by Offspring! I did dabble with the second quest when I was younger after beating Zelda. It was fun having everything changed up, but I was borrowing the game and my buddy wanted it back. Definitely a harder experience, and I was not able to complete it. I'm curious what you'll do with part two. Your video is doing really well, man! I'm glad because you seemed on the edge of wanting to continue with YT or not. You have a knack for this stuff. I want to see you continue AND be successful. Uh oh, what gave it away? Yeah, I had been wanting to collaborate with HG for a while, and I had been wanting to do this video for a while, so it just made a lot of sense. Glad she was totally on board. We spent quite a bit of time on the script. And yeah, HG loves Offspring, and Pyro fit in perfectly for that part of the video. I was into Ignition before Smash, and when that album blew up I remember being pissed, cuz they were so underground back then, and all of a sudden the kids who talked shit about the punks were listening to it. I had found out about them from a 'zine that some punkers in my high school made using the copy machines at school. They would photocopy the CD artwork, stickers, flyers, etc, and make headlines out of magazine clippings, similar to a ransom note. Wish I still had that thing. They also covered Green Day before they exploded with Dookie. You should revisit the second quest. It's a lot of fun, man, especially if you're a hardcore Zelda 1 fan. And I'm still considering my future on KZbin, but it's really hard to get out. I'm passionate about making videos. Look for part two tomorrow!

If someone was presenting the second quest as their big final project in game design school, I imagine they would get a big F. It pretty much miserable every step of the way. Expect your to make ludicrous actions yet punishes you from experimenting and goes out of it's way to drag things out, punish you, leave you with zero clue of what to do and kicks you while you are down. Hiding the second quest what is arguably the worst password ever must have caused so many kids back in the day to start the second quest by accident and just wiped the floor with their arses. Even with a map and guide at your disposal, it's still a terrible experience to play through it. There is absolutely no fun to be had. It takes all the minor poorly designed parts of the first quests and cranks it them all up to 11. The Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels) was also too punishing but you could at least make progress and learn if you tried. Here you literally have to smash your head against a wall and hope that it'll somehow reveal the paths This quest is cruel and the game simply doesn't want the player to have fun. Simple as that imo ^^;

Wow... 8 minutes in and a nod to old school offspring, long before they sucked. Nice.

TFW you're so much of a Gen Z snob that your first experience with Zelda 1 was the 3DS virtual console and you bought it just cuz you were bored and wanted to buy a "new" game for your 3DS that was dirt cheap.

The second quest is essentially a new game; the dungeons were insane. It was one of the only NES games I actually beat (and the first quest obviously.)
