I think the problem with something like Negative XP isn't really that there's "extreme misogyny" in the lyrics or anything really calling for violence or the like. The problem is it really feels like a normalization of that misogynistic viewpoint while maintaining plausible deniability when questioned about hate speech and shit like that. You've mentioned on your twitter that you think musicians and artists are supposed to give off a "vibe" of sorts, an aesthetic that shouldn't be taken too seriously. If you apply that way of looking at Negative XP, it's harmless enough. However, the fact that there's even an incel _culture_ makes sure that it's not going to be taken that way. Instead of giving off a vibe of teenage frustration, it becomes music that reinforces already misogynistic feelings in its audience. Like you said, there's an ideological bend to the lyrics. I feel that that ideological bend is fundamentally at odds with that supposed "warm, human vibe". The vibe is plausible deniability, but the ideology is real (and dangerous if we look at real life incidents.) It's kind of like how political radicalization is a very teenage thing to do. Having a juvenile vibe doesn't make it any less serious. I also reject that it's natural for sexually frustrated people to jump straight to casual misogyny or blaming the world ("the world" as in a group of people, most of the cases women, in opposition to themselves or someone that rejected them). That's like failing to get to the uni you want and jumping straight into racism because international students and affirmative action exist.

Can't it be argued that putting mysogynistic ideals in a "warm" or "charming" musical package can be more insidious than something being more "cold-blooded" or "evil" as you say? People are often only joking until they're not. Many people who claim to have been red-pilled say they got into it for the memes and the humor but then they got hooked on the ideology. I see this music as the same thing. All the comments on his videos are like "look at everyone triggered by a song" and passing it off as "just a joke" but that logic normalizes mysogyny. I don't take these ideas lightly when women are literally killed by people who carry these sentiments and resentments towards them. I take particular issue with you saying that this is usual 16-year-old boy shit, as if that is a reason why something is ethically sound. As a former 16-year-old boy I think I feel confident saying that that is one of the least ethically sound times of ones life. Sexual frustration and alienation are real and valid feelings that can really impede on people's mental health and wellness. I think the discrediting of the reality of those emotions at large funnel into the problem of alienation and repression, particularly amongst young men and boys. But projecting dissatisfaction with life or the world at large onto a marginalized group of people with hateful generalizations is not "warm and fuzzy" to me, no matter how the music feels, and normalizing it is just as much a part of the problem. If this is comedy than it is still punching down which never works in my book. I'm not coming from an offended or triggered place with my point of view. I'm more sad to see this type of emotional deflection onto more marginalized groups by frustrated and repressed people pop up in new ways like the incel movement or this guy's music. Your perspective on this seems to create more space for this type of expression without challenging it in meaningful way which is disappointing to me as someone who's gotten a lot from your music and work. And on taste alone, this humor and musical style is cliche and played out which I would hope is enough of a turn off from an artists perspective.
@charlielookerNYC4 жыл бұрын
hey Morgan. You don't sound crazy to me or hysterical or whatever. The idea that 16 years old is a particularly unethical moment in people's development is quite a good point, or idea at least. The idea of being red-pilled is definitely some brainwashed shit. And it really should go without saying that the whole MRA thing is totally pathological. As for "making space" for certain type and degrees of negativity (even hate tbh), I think it's pretty psychologically healthy and realistic for there to be space for people to work out certain things creatively, hopefully to resolve issues.. As for my past musical work, I'll tell you: a lot of the attitudes I expressed in Extra Life and especially in Seaven Teares, I actually now look at as being legitimately misogynistic and fucked up, and probably lead me to treat women in ways that were harmful to varying extents in the real world. I've worked a lot of that out. Whether that growth is because of my artistic expressions, or in spite of them, is hard for me to say.
@avdmk1114 жыл бұрын
@Charlie Looker @Charlie Looker that's an interesting point in regards to your own work and I haven't really reexamined your lyrics in the time I've grown up since that period. Your lyrics definitely spoke to a dejected and lonely part of myself and I could definitely see there being a good deal of toxic masculinity mixed up in that cocktail of emotions. I appreciate you being critical of yourself and your own work in this way. I do think there is a distinction in the way you were working out those ideas and this guy just talking about girls being dumb and calling things gay and retarded. I always heard a song like Grown Woman as satirical and a commentary on masculine repression. A song like One of your Whores was not gender specific so the relationship dynamic was never inherently mysogynistic in my eyes, even if that's the place you were writing from. You have been provocative but it always seemed exploratory and nonjudgmental rather than spreading an overt message. And it certainly never read as shock value for the sake of being controversial the way this shit does. I totally agree that there should be space for working out the more negative parts of oneself in art, but then there is also space for criticism and my criticism of this person and the pass you're giving him still stands. Making space for working out your negative thoughts doesn't take away accountability from the art's impact. Ultimately I think it's more complicated and toxic than what you're chalking it up to. And on a side note I've also found videos of his titled things like "cops beat anarchist scum" so that's also a part of his message I can't put to the side that I think should also be acknowledged.
