Also have to question whether all of flat community feels the same she does and get on that well. Hell we have evidence that they don't as in Ep2 loads of them hated the trouble the hood was causing. Some likely still feel the same way. I can imagine a lot would love to be free of noise and disturbance due to paper thin walls. Not have to go up hundreds of steps when the lift is busted. Like living in a flat with even one or two bad neighbours can be annoying and at worst hell.

Actually big question: what gives her the right to decide this for everyone in the building? In movies, shows or games it tends to be in suburban locations or ranches that those who are willing will sell their land for the offered money. Just bring the same offer to the other tenants and see how many actually jump ship. Unless they are named characters i doubt they will stay beside them

The fact the rich man literally offered housing to the people he'd be kicking out via his building plans, and yet the main characters still respond to it as if he said he'd render them homeless, just shows how up its own ass and class-blind this show is - not like anybody needed to be told that at this point, but still. That whole scene basically played out like 'He's rich, so everything he says and does is evil! Disregard the fact he just said something altruistic and super generous, especially for somebody of his status, he's rich so he's evil!'

It's also so disconnected from the reality of 'project housing'. The concept was literally to force 'undesirables' into a single area where they could just be ignored, which is why any time you see one of them destroyed there's people cheering. Getting paid to leave would be a dream come true to the vast majority of the residents. Basically the bad guy is the good guy who's actually helping the people the 'good guys' are screwing over at every turn... But he's rich, so.... Hey, is it just me or does Robin's mother give off really strong ganglord vibes to anybody else? Like she's not the owner, manager, or anything like that. She's a tenant, but nobody argues with her, and in this episode John Prince is there to talk directly to her. It doesn't help that when in public the people around her act less like concerned family and friends and more like hired muscle. Little John stepping in front of John Prince in this episode, or the hood gang standing around her like a squad of attack dogs in the final episode.

You know, call me crazy, but it seems like the Robin Hood myth really only works with a medieval feudal perspective on society and ethics. A peasant would be likely to associate their abodes as a "community" because there's no mobility in their society. So being "displaced" by their nobility would be evil in their eyes. This does not work in an modern, urban environment. People move all the time. If a family lives in a squalid neighborhood or a project tower their whole lives, it's likely because of lack of means, not a lack of opportunity. Any self-respecting mother would've taken that deal with Prince, but they have to fit that 13th century feudal myth into this 21st century liberal democratic sludge show.
@MajorSmurf
@MajorSmurf 10 ай бұрын
The myth could be taken to work in modern times if you use the real story formula. The big bad in Robin Hood is the oppressive state and didn't really have anything to do with displacement of a community as it was the whole country that was being sucked dry by over taxation so like there was no where to go even if you had some money. Over taxation and oppressive state can be applied to modern times with someone fighting against it by stealing from them. It just requires a little thought put into it. Or on a more local scale it could be adjusted that John is the head of a gang extorting a block of flats for this criminal empire. Robin could be an ex-follower of his who turns against him. Now Robin in the myth is NOT against the idea of the state but those abusing their power as the state. He helps out the church, nobles, ladies, merchants, knights and so on. He didn't fight against honest folk making an honest living just the state because they were the ones abusing their power over the people. The tagline steal from the rich to feed the poor is a more modern take on his story which I feel like is not the intent or morality of the tale.

Except this setup has nothing to do with the legend of Robin Hood. "Displace the peasantry" wasn't in there. "Oppress them with unjust taxation for fun and profit" was... but _that_ one doesn't mesh at all with modern liberal policies.

The episode was full of JP making generous concessions and logically backing out of a bad deal. Then they poorly frame it as if it was his intention all along to do so. Wouldn’t this defeat the purpose of meeting in the first place? His stated goal was to get the Hood off his back. Surely the Hood would be antagonized by the blatant disrespect shown their matron. Exceptionally poor writing.

Now see...if the writers were any good, they would've had Tressie ask _about_ the new homes they would've received. Are they getting moved into the projects? Are they getting moved into houses? If it's just normal houses, are they completely paid off, or would the property taxes be so high that the average Sherwood resident wouldn't be able to keep up their payments? Are they so far away that they would have to find new jobs or possibly move b/c the commute is too long? But no, as J said, they are not *thinking* people. They didn't _think_ beyond, "Bad guy wants thing, so it _must_ be *bad."*

They are always almost there with the writing but then they take a shit on their own ideas. "Prince killed my father." should have been followed up with "I don't have any evidence to back that up. His death was ruled as a -self deletion- but I don't buy it. He was working on something for Prince and he started acting strange. He seemed distracted and I heard him talking with someone about a case against Prince." Something that would indicate that Prince was responsible for if not himself staging her fathers murder as a -self deletion- These are the worst good guys I have ever seen in a show. Along with some of the worst writing.

It's so weird how they made Prince so accommodating with his offers, both in this episode and others. Like they could have gone the obvious route, just have him be cartoonishly evil and go out of his way to kick the main characters while they're down. Be the oppressive, overpowering force the show wants us to think he is. But nah, he keeps offering reasonable compromises when he doesn't have to, tries to accommodate Tressie every step of the way, and almost downplays some of his LEGITIMATELY criminal schemes to focus on the characters causing trouble for him. The main characters are way better off than people who might actually have to deal with similar stuff IRL. It's like trying to add nuance to the characters made the show worse, because they didn't balance out the rest of the writing to recognize that. It's like he was originally cartoonishly evil, but they went back in and added more details and just forgot to change the rest of the story to make it make sense.

This show has a weird thing about the romantization of living in squalor. Makes me think of that garbage RENT, where the characters would rather have homeless people p*ss on their doorstep because living in a nice neighborhood would compromise their artistic integrity or some nonsense. I'd like to see these people try to hack it in a neighborhood like Commody(?) Green from the og Candyman movie.
@lucyhardman2267
@lucyhardman2267 10 ай бұрын
The people who romanticise this stuff are often spoilt rich kids with no experience of living in actual poverty. Most of the characters in RENT are just LARPers who moved to a poor neighbourhood to pose as struggling artists and spite mommy and daddy. They're not remotely trapped like people who are actually on the breadline - they could improve their situations by getting jobs like grownups and working on their creative stuff in the evenings. If that wasn't enough to get by, they could probably pick up the phone at any time, apologise to their parents for being such insufferable brats and be immediately whisked back to their old lifestyle. Stuff like this is painfully out of touch and disrespectful to people who actually can't escape their circumstances easily.

So like why is John the villain the most compassionate characters. Okay I know the sudden weird and bizarre twist (won't spoil it in case you care) at the end for why he's buying all this housing which makes no fcking sense nor would it ever be allowed to happen nor is anyone insane enough to ever create a plan that stupid. But because that twist is at the end everything John does here is insanely nice and we've seen nothing that makes him evil other then he rich which isn't illegal and as far as we're aware his business is above board. Hell he's better off than the entire local authority who seemingly aren't going to provide housing. Now I don't know about Canada but where I live if a local authority sells a property they own with tenants inside, they have to by law find all tenants a place to live. Failure to do so will get them sued. I just don't understand why John isn't some criminal running an money racketing gig by extorting the tenants of these flats into giving him money. Like at least that way we have some basic grounds to hate him and it makes more sense then rich business man OR started him as the Mayor ripping off everyone through taxes... oh no wait this series is provided on a government funded channel... I guess that wouldn't be allowed, might make them look bad. Atleast Mayor is closer to the original tale... ya know in reality a modernised version of Prince John would be head of state.

Prince is a greedy bastard, but he comes out looking reasonable when any mild statement is immediately met with a hostile outburst from the mum. Especially when his supposed plan here relies on him stalling the mom... When he's the one cosntantly moving the negotiation to a speedy conclusion, while the mom is the one who keeps stopping the conversation to make unreasonable demands and bring in surprise guests. The mother really is despicable here. She's point blank told that she either sells Sherwood now in exchange for new housing and money for Sherwood's people to take care of themselves, or she doesn't sell and Prince gets Sherwood anyway and everyone in Sherwood is made homeless. And her response is that she'd rather her entire community be left out on street, probably starving to death or dying from the medication they now can't afford, than have her Sherwood pride be hurt. I'd love to see her tell of Sherwood about this, maybe get their input on if they'd accept getting new homes instead of getting fucked over. No? They don't get a say in their housing situation Miss 'The Community Stands Together'?

Handles most of the issues they want to push in your face here, better. Better choreography, better acting, better writing, is Canadian as well, and when it got bad the director didn't get mad at the audience. I'm still happy this exists for humor purposes tho.

I found out about it the next afternoon as she was in the ICU, and was apprehensively making preparations to drive down to her city and see her the day after that, not knowing at the time if she would live or die. That afternoon, one of JLongbone's 'Batwoman' reviews premiered. It got me laughing HARD for the first time since I'd heard about the accident, and it put me in a much better mood, which in turn made me better emotionally prepared to see my loved one and be of as much service as I could. The reason all the colours match is because of the narrow gamut that the colours were graded to in post. It's a creative decision. IRL there would be many different shades but they used a LUT to make everything look nicer. Oranges and teals work well together. Either the set designer and wardrobe got together and know about the colour wheel, or some editor did a standard orange and teal colour grade

Once again Prince being perhaps the only good thing that I’ve seen. Noticing still the pattern of the villain of a woke show making more sense and appearing level headed than the rest of the idiot cast. Like bruh the dude runs a children’s hospital as he mentions in a few times, it’s ridiculous how we are supposed to root for these ne’er-do-wells. Like aren’t they paying for new housing for the tenants? Like bruh.

Why do these povvoes in Sherwood think that renting gives them the same rights as ownership? When the owner says "you're evicted" you can't take him to court because you like your neighbours. Whoever wrote this is utterly insane. And woefully ignorant.

Oh no Prince is going to make us homeless he bought/is buying our apartment from us but, actually he comes down to our complex by himself no security or lawyers after his son gets kidnapped to negotiate and offers housing after the deal goes through b-b-but Prince is going to make us homeless" "Oh no Prince killed my dad but, actually my dad left the company and unfortunate events unfolded afterwards leading to my dad killing himself and after my fathers death prince took me in and pretty much raised me (showing prince might have felt some guilt and remorse that he might have been the original factor that spiraled the man to killing himself)b-b-but Prince killed my dad."Man these writers cant even make prince a bad guy. Every damn time they bring something up to make him EVIL they fail. Why do all these cw esque shows make the bad guys so much more interesting? Is there a name for this phenomenon because its happening way too much these days. Also 6:02 his tone of voice is hilarious right here like "duh!! absolutely! the fuck?"

Ahh yes, the first domino to fall is the one that is at fault for what the last domino caused. Let's say you get into a DUI and are charged with manslaughter. You lose you job, you go to prison, whilst in prison your family leaves you, your property is lost to debt and you end up with nothing by the time you get out of prison. By that very logic that the stupid entitled lawyer used, the person serving the drink behind the bar would be the one at fault by causing the first dominos to fall. It's so god damn stupid when stories act like life is linear. Every single choice you make is a domino, it may be the only one to fall or it may cause a thousand more dominos to fall or it may not fall at all depending upon your choice but blaming Prince for your father's death based on that alone is abhorrently selfish and ignorant.

It's a trip how a lot of these writers are so off the mark and incapable of relating to the hero that they end up reversing the roles. They inadvertently make the heroes look bad and the villains end up have a point or be in the right because the good guys are incompetent or reckless.

Have you heard of American Fixtion? Its about a black author who cant get anything he writes sold until, as a joke, he wrote a stereotypical and reductionist view of black culture and wrote "more hood". I bring it up because it really seems like producers are only interested in black atorylines when it involves crime or overcoming racism.
