My guess (and this is just an observation as a white woman, so don't judge me) is that he either never lived in the hood or if he did, it's been a long, long time. Now, I never lived in the hood. The Robin Hood story is one of those things that left an indelible mark on my mind growing up as a young boy. If someone who was really clever tried to do this kind of hip hop aesthetic Robin Hood, I could kind of see it working, but the first problem is that the Hip Hop in the show sucks ass, and secondly even ignoring all the modern day crap this story has none of the gravitas or pathos of Robin Hood. What compares to the moment where King Richard returns and sees all the men who fought for him saying in awe, "All these have remained loyal"? Seriously these race swaps are horrific. No one deserves to have their culture appropriated by Canadians.
@muigokublack6487 Жыл бұрын
And also the fact this show misses the point of Robin Hood. He didn't take from the rich and give to the poor. He gave back what was unjustly taken from the townspeople. If you made your money fairly and worked for it he had no beef with you. He was also a patriot who fought in the Crusades in some versions and another reason he dislikes Prince John because he sees Richard as the true king of England.
@wolfbane7497 Жыл бұрын
I want to throw out another historical fact of why Robin Hood's thievery was so brilliant. You see when you had to pay taxes to your Noble Lord they had to write you a receipt nowadays. A receipt is just a bill of sale so that you can exchange it for your money back after you pay for goods and services. Some Goods can be returned with the receipt but back in the old olden days. You see when the debt collectors came around to collect your taxes they had to write you a receipt. But these receipts were not only just a piece of paper but had written signature. By the debt collector and a wax seal of the king Lord or Baron of that area. In debt collectors would actually attend auctions for contract from these Noble Lords and even the king. To collect the taxes but you actually did pay your taxes on time. Even though they were outrageous and crazy it's proof that you did pay your taxes and due to the king. Or the Lord of that area but here's the thing you get some guy like Robin Hood who robs the tax collectors and the corrupt Nobles. And he gives that money back to the people you probably think it was stopping them from just you know taking that money back. Well the receipt you see if you had this receipt proof that you paid your taxes you didn't have to pay again until next year. or ever how long it takes for your debt collector to come and collect your taxes. So legally if these corrupt Nobles wanted to just take their money again they can actually take them to court and they had proof and the King's seal which means if they tried it that. Means that you're calling the question and calling the king a thief.

And this is only the first minute of the show I'm looking at here. Okay, so first off, cops and deputies aren't the same thing. His car says Sheriff Department, so makes him a deputy. (Deputies deal with county calls outside city limits. Cops do in city limit, though they do help each other out if needed.) So any time one of those guys are called cops, that's wrong. If the deputies are doing calls in the city, that's also wrong. "This is Sergeant Redcap responding to a noise complaint Monarch Construction." All of this is wrong. 1. He's using using his name and rank on the radio. Deputies and cops both use their badge numbers, and the other field officers and dispatch will know who they are and what rank. 2. Deputies and cops don't just get calls and show up and radio in where they are after they're there. lol DISPATCH takes calls and gives them to field officers. All he should be radioing in is that he's "on scene". If you need to give extra disposition for the audience, the MOST he should be saying is "*badge-number* on scene for that noise complain at Monarch Construction." 3. Dude instigates physical contact, antagonizes, and pulls a weapon when he has no backup, and then chases after multiple people ON A NOISE COMPLAINT. 98% of noise complaint calls are just Dispatch: "Can I get you to this location for a noise complain?" Deputy: "*sigh* 10-04" Deputy: "On scene." Deputy to people there: "Hey we got a noise complaint call, can you guys turn it down a bit?" People: "Yeah, sure, sorry!" Deputy: "No problem, have a good night!" Not deputy is going to try and instigate crap on a noise complaint. They just want to move on to another call.

Damn for a group of characters that's supposed to be depicted as being poor they certainly lived pretty good lives. A community center that apparently teaches martial arts and getting to go to a proper summer camp to learn a bunch of other shit. Honestly the idea of a modern day Robin Hood isn't a bad one, but this definitely ain't it. I feel like it'd be better to have this take place in the south. Have Robin be some hillbilly who's living off the land with his family in some small, rural town. Instead of the bad guy being generic evil rich man or generic corporation, have the main villain be the mayor and focus on the fact that they're trying to sell off the towns to some lefties who want to forcibly change the town. Could have an interesting dialog about how not all change is bad and how even if things do change you should remember your roots. Instead we get Robyn which says nothing of value and fails to tell a story that's been told hundreds of times already.

Ten minutes in and we seem to be leaning fairly heavily on "tell, don't show". She's got her "feed the people, eat the rich" placard. So presumably we're meant to sympathise with these downtrodden people. And that's great. Robin Hood is basically about the downtrodden people fighting back against the corrupt landowners, aristocrats and royalty. Except what we *see* in this scene is a nice bright cheerful kitchen, they're tucking into chicken fresh from chickens that their neighbours *raised*, not extruded factory-farm chicken-related by-product. True, they live in a council flat in a tower block and from the outside the tower looks convincingly bleak, but the interior and the chicken breakfast do not suggest to me "downtrodden".

You know, there's this notion that everyone whos farming is some sort of a moron or crazy or whatever. And it's always from the big city folk, worked like this for years now, and it's pretty much present worldwide. I'm living in a pretty rural area - not some backwards village or shit, no, an outskirts of a rather small town. I have a barn with hay, and adjacent to it are places where I raise chickens and bunnies. Not for commercial purposes, no, just for my own benefit. I also have a small patch of land where I grow bunch of produce - corn, potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, pumpkins - you name it. To top it all off, there are also trees around that give apples, plums, and also bushes with raspberries. And I can tell you right fucking now that none of it is retard-proof. Never will be. This shit requires effort, precision, and the track of time. It's hard work, but as a wise hospital director once said - nothing worth having in this world comes easy. And it's far from downtrodden - if you can raise animals and crops, it means you got land where you can raise them. And you know what? I prefer it this way. There's something satisfying about things going according to plan. That and... All that stuff kind of tastes better when natural, but I can't tell if it's just aforementioned satisfaction being a secret ingedient or if they really are pumping that many chemicals into market stuff... That being said... I will concede on saying that raising chicken in the apartment block is just pure stupidity. Health hazard aside, chickens just need open fields, grass and ground. Especiall sand, they adore sand - they cover themselves in the sand because it cleans them off of various parasites that tend to show up in the feathers. It does wonders for them. That and uh... I know how much those little fuckers shit. And I know how much it stinks. The idea of living in an apartment with chickens in it is... It's just disgusting.

One of the things I will never forget during the discourse surrounding the show before it aired, is that one of the supporters of this show actually said that Sherwood Forest isn't real just because it's most known for being the setting of the Robin Hood legend. The guy probably has internet, he doesn't need to spend time looking at a map, yet he couldn't be bothered to look it up.

@viscountrainbows2857 Жыл бұрын
Even if Sherwood Forest were fictional, that is still such a nonpoint in whatever argument they thought they were making. It'd be like saying "New York City can't be real; Daredevil, Punisher, John Wick, and Spider-Man live there so obviously it's fake by virtue of being featured in a work of fiction." I really want to pick the brains of people like this. I'd probably fry my own neurons as a result, though.
@lmahu6627 Жыл бұрын
@@viscountrainbows2857 IIRC, it started when someone said that, as a resident in Sherwood (probably meant the district in Nottingham City, rather than the Forest itself), he takes offense to this show for butchering his country's folklore, especially since it's set in his specific county. So the "Sherwood Forest isn't real" guy clapped back as a means to invalidate the other guy, while looking like an idiot in the process.

That scene from the bad version of Old Boy (9:29) always bothered me. It's just ridiculous to the point of unbelievability. Now don't get me wrong, I'm under no impression that high schoolers would be charitable and supportive of a girl in an elicit love affair with her dad, but I find it much more believable that they'd be huddled away from her whispering things like, "ew, I can't believe she screws her dad" instead of following her around chanting "whore." that sounds more like what they'd do to the girl who blew six football players at the party last weekend. Of course, in this context, that scene is perfect. This trashfire show makes that movie look like Schindler's List by comparison.
