At my local Aldi there is always this one kart that is left unlocked in case someone doesn't have a quart. When your finished the next person just leaves it unlocked and parks it in the same place.

My stomping grounds. In the early 1990s, we writers and artists adopted Southside as OUR neighborhood. The Beehive was the young coffee shop (before evil Starbucks) where we bought tea and coffee for pennies while creating zines, writing stories, drawing the future. Gen-X is often considered to be the apathetic generation, but in fact, we were the first generation to suffer neoliberal austerity as the city reeled from the depression of steel mill closures. We used art and real life connections before the internet to survive and grow. One more tidbit. The building that houses Iron City Circus Arts is called The Brewhouse. It was once home to Duquesne Brewery. When the company closed and the building went abandoned, many of our artists squatted in the factory. After the cops kicked them out multiple times, the artists finally got the city to sell them the building cheap. It's now a loft apartment building with dedicated art spaces. I lived there for a year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good job, as always, Dean.

Right on, Ron. The Beehive in the 90’s was the tits. Mon valley gen-xer here, and musician. we did get the ass end of the stick, but we make beautiful things. There was a guy there, always beat me at chess.

Great episode. My Southside was the Southside of the early-mid 1990's. We would hang at the Beehive and go to Randy's Alternative Music or the Eye of Horus bookstore (an occult bookstore) or one of they many other bookstores or neat shops along East Carson. Friday and Saturday nights my friends sat at the round table by the door at the Beehive and met tons of interesting people. I remember there was an Eides of March parade with fire breathers one year. I am glad I got a chance to experience that Southside. It was a great time to be a part of.

You should check out Carnegie. It's a crossroads, where I79, 376, Rt50, and the busway all come together. Historically, it was known for churches and bars. Today, we still have great bars like the Pour House and Alexions, but we also have Wine and Mead made locally. Russian, Ukranian and many other churches are still going strong, with new additions like the Karma Banquet Center and Attawheed Islamic Center breathing new life into old church properties in this multi-cultural melting pot. Carnegie was a steel manufacturing hub, and while some heavy production remains, we now have tech companies and startups moving in, often re-purposing old buildings like the Salvation Army. Carnegie has a booming restaurant scene with hot spots like Bakn and Leo Greta joining old favorites like Gab N Eat. Even the old Carnegie Post Office building has been redone into a hip coffee shop. Minutes from town, minutes from the airport, Carnegie is much more than an exit on the highway!

Metropol was the place to be in 90's. I can still remember... Things didn't start kicking until around midnight. You would leave and your entire outfit stank of cigarette smoke. Donzis was right down street and good for a causal drink along the river.
