I said this on another channel. For those of you who think he is self-aware, you are wrong. He legitimately feels like he is an unappreciated Scorsese or Spielberg. I urge you to find a way to go to one of his screenings and see for yourself.

I can vouch for that. I've seen comments from ppl who met him in person and they say he's completely deluded. The fact his films are universally panned as jaw droppingly amateurish, piss-poor garbage doesn't deter him from thinking he's in the same league as Spielberg, Cameron and Lucas. A legend in his own mind 😂

My theory is that this is all in Aaron Brand's head. He's a veteran who was medically discharged for crippling PTSD and due to his financially destitute condition, he could only afford canned tuna. Over the years, he succumbed to mercury poisoning and the movie is capturing the aftermath of this. This movie is a story of Aaron Brand combating his illness and trying to find an outside tormentor to conquer, in order to validate his struggle, sense of importance and self-worth.

When people talk shit about Steven Seagal, I point them in the direction of Neil Breen. Seagal may very well be an arrogant ass, but at least his films are relatively tolerable, at least in the sense that you can tell what's going on. In the case of Breen, you can't understand _anything_ in his movies. Also, Seagal's movies typically have passable or even good special effects, whereas Breen's movies look like they used Windows Movie Maker.

Honestly, people don't give Breen enough credit. I genuinely think the man is a misunderstood genius, and i'm not saying this in a "haha irony xd" way. He is quite simply the American Tarkovsky. But whereas Tarkovsky had to spend months, maybe years planning his scripts to achieve a sort of non-chronological, "poetic" surrealism, Breen achieves this effortlessly through simply having a slightly deranged mind. The effect, in a way, is even more artistic, as we have a window as to what's like to think non-linearly; we can see what would be like to inhabit everyday reality with the same logic of dreams: it would look like Double Down. Thus it provides a sort of experience that is even more surreal than artists who deal with the unconscious/surreality because it's done with absolute no self awareness what so ever. Or perhaps all of this is just the mercury poisoning from the tuna can diet, but i'm simply fascinated.
@pretorious700
@pretorious700 Жыл бұрын
You conveniently left out the part about him being completely clueless cinematically.
@des-esseintes
@des-esseintes Жыл бұрын
@@pretorious700 "Clueless" is your word for what I would call a _naivete aesthetik_. Breen is trying to make you think about cinema as an artform by denying you cinematic conventions like believable dialogue (who's to say art must be "realistic" ? the very fact that a movie must be carefully constructed to appear "realistic" should tell you of its inherent artificialness, so why not play with this very fact?), logic, plot coherence (Breen is a Kantian; to him, reality is a chaos that the mind structures through its own thinking; in his films he is constantly trying to show you the chaos underlying our illusions_) a non deranged director (Breen is showing you that sometimes to get to art you must first leave mental health at the door), etc. That he does all of this by accident is irrelevant. Most artists can't really say how they do it: it's mostly an intuitive process that can't be explained. I'm aware that Breen probably has a very different and slightly not sane perspective about his own movies, but they do genuinely show everything i've just mentioned. But I guess that trying to explain Breen to someone who already doesn't appreciate him is futile. He can't be defended aesthetically the same way you'd try to defend, say Stanley Kubrick. Breen's qualities are achieved by accident, and involve a unintentional parody of cinematic conventions that end up being a unique expression in a way that most films can't achieve. To explain this better I may cite Walter Benjamin's concept of the aura: cinematic conventions suck the 'aura' of art by transforming cinema into a ready-made form, like a plastic can; at the same time they condition us to think that "this is how movies are made". Breen's poor but charming handling of these conventions end up somehow breaking them in a way that actually shows his vision, as opposed to say, a Marvel movie which has no vision other than providing subpar entertainment through mindless application of certain formulas; and for that matter it's a unique perspective, which's why he's so fascinating - to us who are Breenologists at least.

In the end, it's the end-product that matters, not how, or why, it was made :D The film is measured against the expectations it sets for itself. The man is clearly punching above his weight, and whilst the effort is commendable, we shouldn't have any delusions about the end product.
