Shkotay D so you agree he's a celebrity. At which point, it becomes less accurate to say 'a scientist' is getting this popular-level acclamation. He's done outreach, and he's getting paid in props. The end. Beyond that, this cult of personality ('audience was in heaven'; 'made science popular again' etc.) is cringey. 'Science', insofar as research infrastructure remains profitable, is not going anywhere. Look at CROs, lol. And the Bible belt has nothing to do with that. Money talks louder. It sounds to me like you're just happy that your team is surging ahead in the culture wars. And that's fine. Go team :). But there's no need to fetishize science along the way. It's basic attentiveness, diligence & integrity...writ large.

FroMaestro So I agree he is a scientist who has made his fame by popularizing science. He's getting paid? Is he supposed to be a monk doing this for free? Frankly the less bible belt and Osteens we have and the more of these guys, the better. Science is indeed profitable, but the VAST majority of the worlds population has little or no knowledge of any fields of science or in fact what science is, and we place such people in charge of powerful technologies. Sagan had a lot to say on that.

+Nick Scott He is Carl Sagan Junior. Sagan actually invited NDT to stay with him for a week when NDT was in high school. He had written a letter to Sagan expressing his love of astrophysics. Sagan not only gave him a tour of his lab, but hosted NDT for about a week in his own home!

Dr. Tyson is likely the most famous scientist in America due to his intriguing & entertaining way of making science accessible to many! He has the persona of a plain-talking guy who knows what he's talking about. Behind all the fun is a serious & accomplished scientist, which I've known for years. Then, I realized I didn't know enough about him, so I looked Neil up on Wikipedia... Wow! Dr. Tyson isn't just a showboat! Any self-respecting scientist should envy Neil's career!
