One thing I never picked up on when I originally watched this film is the implications of the scene with the dead bug the students were cutting up. The whole point of this film Paul Verhoeven basically taking a jab at fascism and showing it for the loser ideology it is and that the humans of this film are in fact the villains and the aggressors of the movie. That's what makes the scene with the bug so interesting, really think about this. The bugs are established to be intelligent beings, fully self-aware and can feel emotion and here are some that are just being cut up. Those bugs were killed and taken to Earth to be cut up likely as a means to make civilians to see them as just something to be studied, to de-humanize them as much as possible. This film is even more unnerving when you remember that fact.
@akrabis89059 ай бұрын
Oh, no no no. Surely they work on dehumanising bugs as much as possible, the thing is.this is not needed. Almost no human would actually treat some alien bugs as a fellow sentient species that doesnt deserve extermination. The thing is, we are talking about two stellar empires that are expanding over universe and yeah, eventually they clash. The point Verhoeven was trying to make is: this comicaly exagerrated fascist society is only good for one thing - killing some bugs
@Winter-The-Masquerade9 ай бұрын
@@akrabis8905 And even then they suck at it considering they loose almost every major fight in the film. One of my favorite bits of this film with the understanding that this film is making fun of fascism is when we get the first real fight of the film. The scene opens with the troopers being all macho and acting like they're the most dangerous badasses of all time. WWhat I like most about this battle is just how pathetic the humans are during all this. Keep in mind that at the start of the battle the Bugs haven't actually done all that much at the and yet after losing one man the rest of the soldiers make a run for it before the orders to retreat are even given and said order to retreat is given only a few second later after everyone is already running for their lives after a few seconds into the war. Hell the Bugs were already kicking their butts and took down most of the fleet before the troopers had even made landfall. It highlights how utterly under prepared these idiots are for an actual fight. They talk a good game about how badass they are but as soon as things get even slightly tough they run with their tale between their legs like a dog with a spray bottle.

@@Winter-The-Masquerade oh, sure. "The intel says deadly blue balls of plasma are just harmless lights" Speaking of Klendathu invasion, its a bit different. They were doing fine but well Shujumi rushed and got brutally killed in front of all of them and thats when weak-willed started to panic and run (actually the time they get shot in true fascist society). As panic spreads, especially if they noticed girl falling in a tunnel and gdtting captured ,(which means they are surrounded), there is no point not to command tactical retreat before it gets too late

I don’t think ST is strictly anti-fascist. Heinlein was a Navy vet and had a good look at the pros and cons of such a society. For example, if this movie was meant to be wholly negative, why is there racial and gender equality? Liberal democracy began in archaic Greece where they practiced the citizen-soldier ideal discussed here. Military service was the basis for citizenship. Same in the Roman Republic. The movie definitely takes a more negative and satirical spin on the politics, but even still there are scenes like this that are far from one-sided. I think a lot of ST involves ruminating on the limits and duties of obedience to authority. You can vote your conscience in politics but must obey orders as a soldier on the battlefield. Except when you know better and must risk punishment by disobeying authority for the good of the state. I think they are interesting questions and the satire is more about the certainty of things, the simplistic propaganda, etc. My take is that Heinlein probably thinks a liberal educational foundation is fundamental before the military training and indoctrination. That the citizen-soldier model works well because you are a civilian first, and that's how such a society resists falling in to fascism a la Rome.
@akrabis89059 ай бұрын
@@tradtke101 the issue is that due to TB, Heinlein never participated in real war. Also yeah, navy. A lot of people miss that navy and field soldiers percieve war different way. While Navy may romanticize their duty, for those in trenches war is hell.

I don't understand how anyone can live in today's day and age and be so ignorant of what fascism is. Regardless, it's worth pointing out that the society in the ST movie is literally not fascism BY DEFINITION. It literally breaks far too many sacred cows of fascist belief to be fascism. In fact, the world of ST is literally still a form of democracy, just with the franchise shifted to only those who have done civil service. . Do you think modern day Switzerland, Germany, or South Korea aren't democracies? You are *required* to do two or more years of civil service in these countries or face jail or disenfranchisement. How is that any different from ST? The world of ST has Free Markets Volunteer Service to the State Freedom of Religion Freedom of the Press Free Movement Like, their world is basically any liberal Western nation of today, sans a few differences, like population control via birth lottery (the planet is extremely overcrowded) and the criminalization of weapon ownership for non-Citizens. This movie is so strange. A combination of dumb, mindless teenagers smiling and kissing. And a civics lesson that teaches cold reality like no school I've ever heard of before. Some people think this movie is stupid. Some think it is brilliant. I think it has stood the test of time.

It teaches fascism, not reality. I guess that went over your head?

@@ImperatorZed guy who thinks "all authority comes from violence" isn't a reasonable take also thinks voting (telling the government you want them to use their guns to enact something) isnt violence at its core this movie really is a midwit trap, you're stuck in the middle recognizing its satirical in nature, but not realizing that some of the things it says can have value at the same time

@@carbharharbcar5867 you are illiterate. Any ther neccessary component of fascism. You are putting it on display here.

@@ImperatorZed any ther? did you misspell authority? (crazy to call someone illiterate when you cant spell check yourself on a device with spell check built in) embarassing anyways, if you mean authority, this only makes you seem dumber, 'authority' is a necessary component of any conventional government. it's also an extrapolation of nature, hierarchy and violence are natural things that cannot be done away with, and by extension any government system or any organization of humans will be influenced by hierarchical and authoritative (violent) concepts. i think your main problem is that you think fascism just means killing all brown people and enhancing suffering. fascism isn't a good governmental system but in wartime for example dictatorial elements can be beneficial. and just because fascism itself isn't good doesnt mean that fascist ideology and reasoning can't be correct on some level. there's a reason people believed it in the past. same with communism, because labor theory of value has certain correct aspects to it.

The book was way better than the movie. The real Troopers in the book would have destroyed the pathetic ones in the movie. I would have been more impressed with the movie if it had stayed true to the book.
