@@marcd2743 Probably the book. It's a solid sci-fi story, and like all good sci-fi, it serves as a vehicle for exploring ideas. But it's also more focused than the movie. The book really just follows Johnny Rico and his life in the military. The movie is a parody. Paul Verhoeven essentially made a critique of fascism, which is not what the society is in the book. But that seems to be the only idea he was interested in, as if he just wanted to tell a completely different story. The film also lacks a lot of things that are integral to the book, like the power armor that's central to how the infantry fight. Not to mention other species and conflicts, beyond just their war with the bugs.

I really thought this movie was great and than about 10 or 15 years later I read the book… The scene with the knife is from the book, but instead of what happened in the movie Zim actually tried to explain and at no point went into violence. After some back and forth with the private he gives probably the best explanation of why army’s exist, in my opinion. He goes: There can be circumstances when it’s just as foolish to hit an enemy city with an H-bomb as it would be to spank a baby with an ax. War is not violence and killing, pure and simple; war is controlled violence, for a purpose. The purpose of war is to support your government’s decisions by force. The purpose is never to kill the enemy just to be killing him . . . but to make him do what you want him to do. Not killing . . . but controlled and purposeful violence. But it’s not your business or mine to decide the purpose of the control. It’s never a soldier’s business to decide when or where or how-or why-he fights; that belongs to the statesmen and the generals. The statesmen decide why and how much; the generals take it from there and tell us where and when and how. We supply the violence; other people-‘older and wiser heads,’ as they say-supply the control. Which is as it should be. That’s the best answer I can give you. I understand that is way to long for the movie, but the realty is the movies is more of a parody of the original book. If you take it that way then yes it’s fun to watch dumbed down version. If you would like some insight into how and why military works take the book. Buy the way First blood the book that inspired Rambo: First blood is written by the same author. Rambo isn’t very by the book two, but for the most part it captures the theme and massage of the book. I would have loved Starship Troopers to have been made more by the book and less as a parody of the book. ps. as Johnny Fisheye 4692 corrected me Starship troopers and First blood are not written by the same author. Sorry about that. I was rereading both books last year kinda back to back, they are very similar in ton and theme, so it must have stuck in my mind they ware by same author witch is incorrect. Thank for pointing that out Johnny Fisheye! My point on treating Starship troopers movie more seriously stands, I wished it was more like First blood movie.

I really loved the book, ironically I love the ideas that are explored in both starship troopers and the forever war. If I recall correctly I believe the forever war was a response to the ideas starship troopers looks at but I love them both never the less and agree/take in the points from both books. Regardless I think a quote on a review someone made that sums it up well, " the books: boring action scenes, great philosophy. The movie: boring philosophy, great action scenes." Personally I would love to see a anime adaptation of the book because for obvious reasons, the CGI would either be too costly or look so poor. However a "patlabour 2" or 1990's "ghost in the shell" style 10 part, limited anime series exploring the book with each part equaling 1-2 chapters of the original book similar to how band of brothers showed the development of the characters and war over the course of 10 episodes, would be the best way to translate the contents of the book with its context, into visual media.
