BARN the documentary film, directed by Daryl Hannah (dhlovelife), catches a rare intimate glimpse of this legendary band as they make music in a restored 19th-century log barn under the full moon. The film captures Neil and the Horse in an organic way, their easy irreverent humor, their brotherhood, and of course their music, as it was created. BARN intentionally lingers on single shots for entire songs, showing there are no tricks, revealing the raw, organic, and spontaneous process of the music bursting to life from unexpected moments. Exquisite changes of light and weather dance in the remote meadow where the barn sits, adding a sweet, mystical magic as the music thumps, reverberates, and echoes. The film is infused with the gratitude and joy that permeated the whole experience.

From the first time I heard Neil, I was a fan. Long hair and flannel shirts, and the freedom to do what I wanted not what others expected me to do soon followed. Fifty years later, I am still doing it and I thank Neil for showing me the way. Peace from Kittery, Maine.

First memory of Neil : 12 years old in a surf shop in LBI NJ checking out every board with enough money to buy a bar of surf wax - Southern Man comes on the radio - the song ended and I am sitting on the floor - I look next to me and the owner of the shop is sitting next to me - we were blown away ! From that moment on, through thick and thin and the ups and downs of life the one constant in my life was Neil Youngs voice and music. Thanks Neil !

I love every second of this. It just makes me feel better every time I watch and listen to it. I have the vinyl and the Cd. I am in 70’s, a retired teacher after 40 plus years in the trenches and learned a few things about music and picked up the guitar and started recording my stuff a couple years ago. I don’t give a shit about doing anything more than creating and living now with what I have left in life. These guys are great models to emulate for that very purpose.

When I first saw the two dogs together the one on the right had me flashing to Daryl and At Play in the Fields of the Lord, awesome film IMHO. At 60 now, I remember Heart of Gold after my parents divorce, Dad's remarriage, moving a "Brady Bunch" to north Florida. Great memories. The '70s still had wood and leather before the plastic covered so much. So nice to have the music to index things. My heart of gold left me for "Jesus" last year, and I have to be okay with that. I thank God that she still shines through me and brings me to tears as my guitar sits silent. Still able to smile at the nonsense and the breeze. Rock on Neil!

Neil Young’s music has always been so authentic and touching. I’ve been listening to him since I was in high school in the 1960s.His music has helped me through a lot of tough spots. I have seen him live a few times. My favorite performance was a solo concert that Neil did at the Paramont theater in Portland Oregon back in the early 70s. Just him with an acoustic wooden guitar and a piano. It was so moving you couldn’t hear a pin drop in the entire theater.

Same for me in Philly at the old Tower Theater in Upper Darby circa 1992. Was the most peaceful show I’ve ever been to and I’ve been to a lot. He literally casts a spell of peace over his audience. The only word to accurately describe it is magic!

Yes!!! I was just thinking: 💭"I bet it's cold AF in the Winter!"❄️🏔️(with all those wide open slats, in his barn!) Yes, his ranch is incredible! It keeps growing, too👍🤗. He buys more and more land, to conserve it. I LOVE that he says, "I walk through the forest, and the melody comes to me." "I don't TRY...When one tries, you've lost it." He records the melody on his flip phone, then, writes the lyrics, later. He's, absolutely, INCREDIBLE!😊🎸🔥

Neil's voice never seems to change and it's just great. Would you guys believe I've still got his After The Gold Rush album in cassette tape format. A girlfriend of mine before gave it to me way back in 1979 and it still sounds good. Story was, I came by her house and I heard on her player and since I didn't know who Neil Young was then, I ask my girlfriend, is that a male or a female? It was a "pleasant diversion" seein' and hearin' Neil playin' with POTR for the better part of the last decade. However, as great of a collaboration that Collective Sound of Neil/POTR was/is, it is such a refreshing, heartwarming, soulful feelin' of decades-long JOY, bein' Back In The Barn Again with The Horse; whether it be the "More Barn"-Barn, of sittin' in the boat out on the pond outside of Redwood, or the newer Log Barn in Colorado. What's the same is, it's both Crazy Horse playin' in "The Barn". Plus, as much as I'm sad not seein'/hearin' "Ol' Poncho" on Rhythm Guitar/Keys/Vocals with The Horse, ('cause who wouldn't mind retirin' to Hawaii in your golden years), it truly doesn't get any better to have long-time compadre (and always a life-long member of Crazy Horse), Nils Lofgren, back on Guitar/Piano/Accordian/Vocals again. And of course, it goes without sayin', a huge shout-out to Ol' Ralph and Ol' Billy, the Legs and Hooves Back-Beat of The Horse! Like Neil describes the music which eminates from The Barn, the best word for that decades-long-place-in -our-hearts is: ORGANIC! Yes, indeed, that about says it all. Yep!

Things that are beautiful about this livestream: - the land, which speaks for itself - the BARN, which also speaks for itself - the artful and yet easy-on-the-viewer cinematography that gives both the land and the barn voice - the architectural and cinematic use of not just sunlight but of moonlight and starlight, and of seasonal timing generally - the insistence on making honest interactions the core value of production - the incorporation of dogs, of meteors, and of swearing, gaffes and ad-libs - ...actually, I don't know how to word this one. Something about the leveling-up feeling one gets while taking in the latest musical echoes and nudges of those who are masters of their craft

If only it was possible to start a revolution in music where live recording and unobtrusive production was widespread and accepted again. If NY was starting out again now I imagine he’d have trouble getting airplay for these songs though those of us who love his work can tell how good they are. Great to have seen this film. You could hear how the harmonies and some guitar solo parts have been overdubbed but still the basic recording process seems to have been much what it was under David Briggs. A joy to watch.

If he was starting out now he'd just be another anonymous person trying to get people to hear their songs on spotify, it's sad because there are many talented musicians still out there, but the mainstream is all about hip hop and (c)rap, and it will never reverse as the kids who used to rock have all gotten older and didn't pass good music down to their kids, so todays youth, all of them, (not just ghetto kids) are into rap, white kids don't even listen to rock or music with musicians anymore, its sad, they've all been brainwashed by reaity tv stars and social media.

@@greatunz67 That's indeed possible, I agree. I wonder though whether a new NY wouldn’t find away through, either by sheer force of determination, skilful adjustments of style or canny networking. I’ve always sensed that for NY, having a father who in Canada was a pretty famous writer must have given him a sense of how to get on with the practical side of the music business. Obviously now there is a lot of shallow commercial music made but there was in the 70s too. And on KZbin you can see the formation of communites around interesting, talented musicians. Maybe GOOD new ways forward can be found.

@@jamesmarshall3521 Thank you for good comment! On planet earth there is still no vision, no understanding of Global Harmony or anything like Harmony of the Universe. Music, dance, poetry, indeed all the arts, are stimulated by that spirit which every human being can actually feel in himself when he sings, makes music, is himself harmonious and stands in prayer. (Prayer is actually meditating and going into the center of one's mind and sensing and recognizing reality within oneself. Musicians always know that they live primarily because they are loving, not because they are thinking. If music accompanies our thinking, then it can also transmit feelings, then we have understood the song of life and the law and are in harmony with the universe and in harmony with all voices (souls). That's how I understood it and the term "Harmony of the Universe" grew within me.
