I was there, shortly after this show raced back to the car to try and make it back to upstate Ny, for high school finals to graduate. We didn’t make to far as my buddy fell asleep at the wheel, and we crashed my moms brand new car about 20 miles out of Manchester. Luckily we all survived, thank you mom love you!

Despite the revolving jam sessions, this was a crowd with a long attention span, and the festival's best stretches were when bands just held their own for long chunks of time. Neil Young, on Friday, performed with his three-decade-old band, Crazy Horse, under a custardy full moon. For three hours he played expanded versions, some of them 29 minutes long, of his best songs -- ''Love to Burn,'' ''Cortez the Killer,'' ''Cinnamon Girl'' and others. He was the only soloist, breaking to solo at length several times per song. Playing in his ragged, stuttering phrases, he made strings of notes crumble into noise, then recohere toward graceful endings. (The festival's excellent concert sound made his guitar tone feel a mile thick.) It was extraordinary, the ideal of a gnarled yet sophisticated technique.---NY Times review--slightly choppy , but to me, spot on. And by the way--it was several miles thick.

damn right. I was on top of an RV in a lawn chair just 30 feet beyond the mainstage perimeter. A random, crazy bastard set off a repeating rocket firework on the walkway mere seconds before this set kicked off. The way the wall of sound swirled around the gentle bowl of the natural landscape...ugh...perfection. Goddamn I've never heard anything like it since...and I've been around the block a time or two. It was an all-timer of a show, that's to say the least.

What is significant to me, having been at the show as well. That in 03 Neil was only playing the Greendale album at his shows. Both solo and with the Crazy Horse, this was the first date of that year that he did this crazy horse set, of which he only did a handful of other times that year. So this was the first one of those shows, the super rare 03 Crazy Horse sets
@boomerapproved4143 жыл бұрын
I went to a Neil Young and CH show in 03 in St. Louis and he played Greendale. I had no clue he was doing that and was kind of mad but, ultimately, I did enjoy it. Thankfully I had the album so I was at least familiar with the music. there were a lot of confused folks that day though.

That reminds me of the time I went to see Neil Young when Dave Matthews Band opened for them. The place was packed with DMB fans and I came strolling in just as crazy horse started to play. I was in the 7th row dancing and grooving and when the song was over I turned around to look at the crowd reaction. All of the Dave Matthews fans were just sitting there with their mouths wide open in stunned amazement. I'm sure Neil and Crazy Horse captured a lot of Dave Matthews fans who most likely thought that their favorite was going to steal the show from old man Young.

me too! Keep on rockin' in the free world god damn blew me the funk away! ... BTW did any of you two lose a shirt that said "Music equals Live"? It was green (I think die tie) and had a weird looking golden sphinx-thing on it. I found it after the show and screamed "Who's shirt is this?!" several times until someone I couldn't see shouted from afar, "It's your's man!". I gave up after that and just kept it, cuz I did want that shirt, but felt like I needed to try and find the owner before I could chalk it up as a ground score, lol... Bags and or bottles of "conciseness changers" is another story though, heh.

29:08 Powderfinger (lyrics) Look out, mama, there's a white boat coming up the river With a big red beacon, and a flag, and a man on the rail I think you'd better call John 'Cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail And it's less than a mile away I hope they didn't come to stay It's got numbers on the side and a gun And it's making big waves Daddy's gone and my brother's out hunting in the mountains Big John's been drinking since the river took Emmy-Lou So the powers that be left me here to do the thinkin' And I just turned twenty-two I was wondering what to do And the closer they got The more those feelings grew Daddy's rifle in my hand felt reassuring He said me, red means run, son, numbers add up to nothing When the first shot hit the docks I saw it coming Raised my rifle to my eye Never stopped to wonder why Then I saw black And my face splashed in the sky Shelter me from the powder and the finger Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger Just think of me as one you'd never figured Would fade away so young With so much left undone Remember me to my love I know I'll miss her
