To me it would be amazing if it weren't still relevant. Anything so addictive and pleasurable will always be as it always has been. Just because something has been around for a while doesn't mean that it's lost its appeal. Exactly the opposite is usually true.

A poet, a prophet, and a priest. How many today can come close to the touch, the artistry, the mastery that is Neil Young? The insight, the beauty and touch of poetic insight that few can put to paper never mind to song. Thinking of the crass, crude, rude, simple, and pathetic that passes today for music, I praise Young for keeping the music alive in my heart. God bless Neil Young.

The great eraser. It takes your friends, family, pets, even mom and dad. Its not done. Next it takes stuff, rings and watches, things that shine and sing. Then it takes your job. When you run out of money, and have lost a lot of weight, it takes your home. After that, its not a big jump to your dignity, self respect and verility. All that matters is getting high. And when you sleep in vomit and piss yourself, and the law gives up cuz you're a lost cause, it takes your health. The last think it takes, is the first thing it wanted, and you gave it willingly. Your Life. Addiction is the greatest eraser, it takes it all.

My favorite artist, one of my favorite songs. Going on 17years sober, don't miss it a bit. I survived. Changed my life completely for the better. Grateful everyday. Neil still my favorite. Been listening since he was in Buffalo Springfield. Both my boys have gone to see Neil several times, with me and without me. When they were little i would sing After the Gold Rush to them to help go to sleep. When my oldest was about 18yrs. old he heard Neil on the radio singing After the Gold Rush. He said he'd heard this song somewhere before. I told him where he'd heard it. That was 17 years ago. We've been closer ever since. He's coming up on 8 years sober. Closer to my youngest boy too. Life is good.

This song hits close to home, I have been addicted to meth, heroin, and coke for about 7 years now with a couple breaks in between, started out smoking then moved to slammin, I now have 8 months clean and that's the longest I've ever gone. Not only have I lived the damage done but, I have also seen it too. If there is anyone reading this trying to get clean stick with it, keep your head up, surround yourself with good people, listen to great music like this, and most importantly...

This song always reduces me to tears. I lost so many people through addiction through the 70's and the 80's and almost followed them through the gate before I cleaned up in 1999 after 18 months of treatment. I went back to college and became an addiction treatment/mental health specialist in San Francisco in 2003. I have seen so much pain since that it has changed me, and not necessarily for the good. Neil Young hit it on the head, but many of us did not Hear his message. I pray that all of you who still "play" with these chemicals wake up and get help while you can. The world turns it's back on us when we are in our addictions. Nobody cares except those who have felt our pain. Be Born again my friends!! Get Clean!! Thank you Neil Young!

I lost my brother, Scott, to heroin & cocaine a few months before he turned 21. He was at a party and a girl turned him onto this new high for the first time. He passed out and never woke up from the "speedball". My nephew, Scott who was named after my brother, was in and out of jail and rehab with a heroin addiction... The night before his 21st birthday, he was getting ready to go to dinner with his Mom, my sister, and Dad to celebrate his big day. Though he had been clean for a month or so, a couple that he knew gave him some heroin for his 21st birthday. He decided to do it before dinner, gave himself the shot, fell on the floor with the needle in his arm and never woke up... Senseless... Please educate your children and grandchildren. ♡♡♡

On jan1, this coming year we get the war on opioids. I've never done heroin, but I can relate, at least a little. I've taken stuff for Chronic severe pain for years, been cut back for it several times to prepare for that day, less than a week away, when no on can get more that 39 milligrams. I missed my doses for over 24 hours to see how bad it would be, and help prepare myself and and found w out about withdrawal that seemed to be a new kind of hell. i think that's the highlight of this all-around brilliant song. with such a beautiful chord progression and haunting melody, i think most artists would stretch something like that out into more than 2 minutes. hell, if i ever wrote the first 10 seconds of that song, it'd wind up being like "In A Gadda Da Vida" or "Sister Ray" - i'd basically milk it for all its worth. it says a lot about Neil Young's attitude towards his art, and how it trumps other factors like money and prestige (although he hasn't done too bad i those areas, either....) that he leaves the chord progression unfinished - it leaves the listener kind of suspended in the air, waiting for something to resolve itself that'll never happen. the song LITERALLY ends before its time.

This goes out to EVERYONE that has a addiction. PLEASE go get help. Don't put your Mother or Dad thru what I'm going through. As you can see, I lost BOTH of my kids due to HEROIN. The needle 💉 and spoon 🥄 took away my life. My daughter Nicole was the last of family I had left. It's SO HARD to celebrate ANY holidays with my husband. It's not fair to him that I'm SO sad. But the wonderful thing is he was just a step dad but he ALWAYS gets me something and says, this is from BOTH of your kids. Just like the rose 🌹 bush he planted or the birthday 🎂's he buys. He ALWAYS puts from Nicole and Joey. Now that's a REAL MAN. I feel so BLESSED to have him. His name is RICKY HARVEY.

This song is so true. Before I was a slave to smack for 3 years in Germany in the early 80's, I never really understood. Got clean in 86 & don't ever want to be a slave again. The thoughts always there, but the end result is death. This song is so very true.

stay with Neil Young, he understands, and he'll be there for you. it's hard enough living this life without addiction, there are people with compassion for what stuggles others are going through. take it one day at a time, sometimes one minute at a time is all any of us can do, and that's the truth!

@rhcpf12 I think that’s the point-,we are left wanting more song the way we want people we lose. And the fact that the song ends so abruptly during the chord progression is definitely meant to mirror early, tragic, abrupt death.

I too have loved and lost from this. 2 of the greatest songs are this one and Skynyrd's Needle and The Spoon and That Smell which are both anti-drug songs. Regardless to a lot of baseless rumours, Ronnie VanZant loved Neil Young wore his t-shirts both on the road and at home.. Neil had sent VanZant several songs he wanted the band to cut one was "powderkeg" but fate had it's way when the plane crashed in 1977. The picture on front of the Street Survivors original album was VanZant wearing Neil's t-shirt under a black leather jacket with black widow spiders on the sleeves..13 days after it was released and there are also 13 letters in Lynyrd Skynyrd.. For those who don't know, " the smell of death surrounds you.." Don't mess around people it ain't no good..RebTL 2016

What a performance - there's such serenity in him even whilst playing what is a complicated guitar part. Been learning to learn it myself, give me another ten years and I might get somewhere close to Neil. As for his singing, I'll never get there. Absolute legend, and still somehow relatively under-appreciated by the masses. Long may he run ✊️

My only kids passed away from HEROIN overdoses just 4 years apart. Now what's a mother to do?? Just sit and drink her life away to hopefully die quickly and join them in HEAVEN. Your observation was more bang on than you know. Neil inspired many of the grunge musicians and Neil and Kurt played together. Kurt unfortunately used the line from Neil's Hey Hey My My in his suicide note; "It's better to burn out than to fade away". Neil later said that really messed him up. There are two version of Hey Hey My My and I don't think he plays the one with that line in it anymore.
