Neil is a big model-train collector, and my Dad used to run into him at train shows and ask if he bought anything good. Neil would open his bag and show my Dad his new engine and they'd chat about it like it was no big deal. Just a legend showing my Dad his trains. We used to joke that he'd sing to my Dad, "Old man take a look at my train, it's a lot like yours."

My dad left when I was 12 and I didn't see him again until 36 years later. It was a song that expressed the raw emotions I was feeling about my old man. The song took on a whole new meaning for me later in life.. As fate would have it, I ended up having to be his caretaker for the last 6 years of his life. I am glad I had a chance to get to know and spend time with him. Now I am the old man.

YeahNo101 ? hey i wanted to share with you what Jesus Christ said, He said in matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” wow! and Jesus Christ loves YOU so much, i’m going to bring up these 3 scriptures john 3:16-21: “for God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” romans 5:6-8: “you see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” and romans 10:9-13: “if you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” so God wants to redeem and restore you! He wants to give you true love and joy and peace not only on earth but in His eternal kingdom! but our sins have separated us from God, and the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is in those scriptures, His grace! so if you would turn away from your sins to follow God and put your faith and trust in Him and what He did for you He would gift you His grace which is eternal life in His kingdom where there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying. there will be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. because He loves and cares for you so much! but if we deny and reject Him, He is just and holy and righteous and will have to deny and reject us of His kingdom. and there will be weeping and gnashing and fire when we’re separated from God, because in God is everything good but without Him is the opposite. there is also a channel here on youtube i appeal to you to watch it’s called “Christ forgiveness ministries” hear what they have to say! God bless you my friend accept Jesus Christ and He will give you true life here and in heaven and give it to you abundantly you His grace. amen 🙌

I was one of the luckiest guys in the world. I married my childhood sweetheart and had two children. First born a son and then a daughter. My son joined the Military in the mid 80's and I missed him immensely. I listened to this song all the time. and when he got out of the military him and I worked together and became not just closed but best of friends. him and I and also his mother went to quite a few Neil Young concerts together. this always had a heavy effect on me a lot more than I did on him. he was a great kid a wonderful son and the greatest friend anyone could have. unfortunately I lost my boy to pancreatic cancer and life is not and never will be the same for me again. I miss him so.

When I was a high school senior I wrote a piece for the high school newspaper reviewing Neil Young’s “new” album “Harvest”, and spoke about this song and how powerful it is. I also play guitar and played it with a band member on two 12-string guitars while in high school. I was 18 and wondered what life would bring. I did ask my girlfriend to the senior prom. That was 51 years ago. We now have 4 kids and 6 grandkids - still play guitar and that song. How time flies. Sort of like the Beatles song “When I’m 64”.

Great Song from 1971!Thanks Neil!!! - I'm 52 and last week, for the first time in my life, was called an old man - by a stranger - that I got into a confrontation with. I wasn't too deeply insulted, for some reason- maybe because I don't see myself as old, or maybe since it was unexpected? Just don't feel my age - emotionally. Physically, I'm going downhill, but emotionally, I think I'm very much like I have been my adult life. - What has changed? Well, I'm wiser and better at fixing things, and don't have overly big dreams anymore. I've lost my hair in some places, and it's now growing in other places. I now value life more and avoid risky behavior - think motorcycles or speeding. And, the best thing about my age is that I have a 23 year old son - so that is awesome! Anyway, if you're reading this, I wish you well, and peace of mind.

Many years ago I attended a Neil Young concert at the Jubilee Auditorium here in Edmonton Alberta Canada. It was a bitterly cold night, about -30 below. I remember he refused to play when he came out on stage until they turned up the house lights so he could see the audience. He told the stage hands in the wings that if he couldn't see the audience it might as well be an empty theatre with a sound system playing people clapping. Just Neil Young, a guitar or two, and a piano. It was not so much of a performance as a glimpse into who he was at that time. This was one of the songs he played that night. He claimed he had written on the plane on his way up from California. He explained that he had just gone through a messy divorce and moved out to his ranch that he had bought much as he does in this video. He admitted that at that point in his life he was at an emotional low and a hurting unit. He also told us that the song was about one night when he sat with his Foreman and they got drunk together. The Foreman didn't have much use for that long haired Hippy but as the alcohol took over their conversation turned to how life had worked out for each of them with it's lofty successes and it's heartbreaking lows and Neil realized that despite their differences in age and background, they weren't all that much different. Each had loved and lost and suffered for their loss. It was and is the best concert I have ever been to. He received over six standing ovations that night.........

Hey buddy your not alone. Lost my Dad at 18 years old from alcohol poising. 12 years ago now. Lost my Grandpa 2 years ago whom took my dads place. I can happily say I stuck by his side like he did mine and held his hand in the last seconds. This song hit me like how you say it got you. So happy that there is a song that can touch that pain because at times my mind can not even connect to the pain due to subconsciously blocking it. This song tears that wall down. The pain ironically feels great to feel strangely enough to say as it is to hear from someone who has not experienced.

@flexor212000 It means a son is young and has his own horizons to look to, his own legacy to create. but a father may have come to the conclusion that his greatest legacy is his children, not what he chased in his own youth. How was I to know, a naive teenager in the midwest who wanted to live in California. It was my destiny, surfing, and other frolics. With time, a miracle occurred; I was stationed in the military at Ft. Ord, and caught a glimpse of California. I was hooked. Years later, I returned to southern California and ironically didn't live far from the Neil Young ranch. Although never on the property, it was the unique pleasure for a brief period of time to attend music practices with Crazy Horse in a town called Summerland. That was an incredible time; and that house was magical as much as the people who lived there. It was, "those were the days my friend, I thought they would never end." Such folly, and yet to be in the midst of such talent was amazing. Crazy Horse was at that time one of the bands playing for Neil Young. Today, I am that old man. And this song soothes the soul; and reminds me the parties are over, but the musical memories are eternal.

I’ve been listening to this song for exactly a decade now. I first discovered Neil Young when I was 24, and the lyrics immediately struck a chord with me, reminding me of my relationship with my dad. Ten years later, just last week, I had a heartfelt conversation with my dad, who’s 71 but physically feels much older due to a lifetime of struggles (long story). That talk made me realize he doesn’t have much time left, and this song hit me just as hard-if not harder-than it did back then. It’s been a tough road for him, dealing with his health and a lot of solitude, something I can relate to in my own way. This song brings back so many memories of my childhood with him, moments I now cherish even more deeply. I just needed to share this-it’s raw and real. Dad, I love you more than anything in this world. Always.

Not to mention the “one note guitar solo” he invented… everything NOT by the book, yet brilliant!

I’m 24 and almost died twice this year because of overdose. I’m sober now a month and there really is so much more. That part of the song really gives me hope that I’ll have a great life 25 and on....

Such a soulful song. And Neil has a great voice for his songs. As we get older we see Neil had an old soul as a young man. Great song.

Neil sounds like a Muppet. One of the most overrated performers of all time.

They are changing the name of this Song to Sold Man. Its now about a controlling establishment type that sold off his catalog for millions and now tries to censor speech and other things that he used to protest about. The flip side of the record has his other new songs "stop talking in the free world" and "get off my lawn"
