I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 78 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

I think the full show is still on youtube. I think it is only 4 or 5 songs and about 30 min long. It's a good watch if you have a half an hour to kill.

As others have said he was in the group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (sometimes referred to as CSNY). Before he joined, the group was Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN). All four had been in other successful bands before they got together. They had great harmonies and were very popular. Two of my favorites of theirs are “Southern Cross” and “Teach Your Children”. I highly recommend both. Neil Young had a song, “Southern Man”, which was critical of the South because of slavery and racism. Lynyrd Skynyrd resented the implication that all southerners were guilty. Their iconic song “Sweet Home Alabama” has the lines, “Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her/Well, I heard ol’ Neil put her down/Well, I hope Neil Young will remember/A Southern man don’t need him around anyhow.” In his 2012 autobiography Neil Young admitted he deserved their criticism and he regrets the “accusatory and condescending” lyrics. BTW, I’m sure you’ve heard at least part of “Sweet Home Alabama” but if you’ve never really listened to the whole song it would be a great one to react to.

True story. 1983 in a music venue in West Hollywood, California to see Tom Waits. Small intimate place that holds about 200 people. Tom is a few songs in and says a friend of his in the audience and is going to come up. This guy walks down the aisle I’m in, I turn around and it’s Neil Young and he hands me the joint he was smoking. 👍😎

I love that Neil only needs that little chair and his guitar, but I do miss the banjo on the studio recording. Check out some of his electric guitar work and you will know why he is known as the father of grunge. There are many songs with long extended guitar solos where he seems to enter a trance-like state. "Like A Hurricane" and "Cowgirl In The Sand" are two good examples.

The caretaker's name was Louis. He was a bit surprised when he first met Neil as the new owner because he was only 25 but had the means to buy such a big ranch. When he asked, "how'd a young guy like you come to own a ranch?", Young answered, "Just lucky, Lou. Really lucky"

Central California Native chiming in: There are Definitely ranches and small towns out here. My grandparents had a ranch (until shortly past a year after my grandpa's death) up in the hills between Fresno and Yosemite. It was incredibly difficult to get resources - 45 minutes to Fresno or the other nearest town with a decent grocery or any medical services. When grandpa needed hospice, the only possibility was terrible - and caused more trouble than they solved in the end. On the other side, my dad was born and raised in an area that had several hundred people when he was born - and still barely has a 5 digit population at most (seemed smaller when I was a kid, because we mostly interacted with the unincorporated households and members of the tiny church our family has been connected to for most of it's ~120 year history). The Beverly Hillbillies somehow managed to miss central California driving in from back east - they're fictional, but a lot of people have the 'swimming pools, movie stars' idea of California - I'm here to tell ya, it just isn't true!

The concert was for the BBC in the UK. He was asking if we had ranches here. We don't....we just have farms.
@souledout08
@souledout08 7 ай бұрын
@@MrGettysburg44 do you mean there are only farms in the UK? Because there certainly are ranches in the US. In California, no less, which I'm fairly sure AB wondered aloud about. That's what I was responding to.
@MrGettysburg44
@MrGettysburg44 7 ай бұрын
@@souledout08 yes, we don't have ranches in the UK. It is only really farms. We do have horse-breeders but not ranches. I think the response was to Neil's question "Do you have things like that here?" He asked the question because the concert was taking place in the UK. That was the confusion I think.

We in the UK are very much more reserved than US audiences. We do "Kitty cheers" normally....doesn't mean that we appreciate artists any less. BBC Four is a channel that generally concentrates on the Arts. This whole concert is fantastic as is NY. In the last few days I have watched concerts by Jackson Browne, Carole King and James Taylor on there.
