I am 66 years old and have been hearing Niel Young on the radio since I was about 10. Every thing he stood for has always made sense to me. Those who celebrate the beauty that is within others are always touched by his music. Thank you for playing this song today.

The man is a living legend. I'm 65 and grew up listening to his music. Had had a major impact on my life all these years. I got a little emotional watching you react to this. I've been listening to this song for decades and it still gets to me! Love the reaction. ☮

This is a great live performance of his. You didn't play the beginning where he explains that the song was written about an old caretaker/foreman that lived on Neil's ranch taking care of the place. And you're right, it's a beautiful song.

Neil Young owned a ranch when he made this song. The song was about a foreman or main ranch hand that took care of the livestock ect .The man was a little up in the years which he had great respect for .Now I guess me and Neil are the old men. How time flies by!

The "old man" who was the inspiration for this song was a man name Louis who was the caretaker on a ranch he bought in California when he was just 25 years old. The caretaker asked, "How'd such a young man come to be able to afford a big ranch like this?" Neil answered, "Just lucky, Lou. Really lucky..."

Expanding on Barbara’s comment, there’s another video of the same performance which includes Neil’s introduction to the song. It explains his owning a California ranch (the Paradise he mentions) purchased shortly prior on which he met the caretaker (the Old Man) he retained to work for him and to whom he took a liking. It was this “old man” he wrote the song to.

There is an intro to this song where he talks about this ranch he bought and with the ranch came a caretaker who had been then for quite some time. That caretaker was the inspiration for this song. Another great one from this same live show is 'Hey Hey My My' where he adds harmonica to the mix. Good stuff!

I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 77 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

Well...this goes on my best of reactions playlist. 🙂 I sure wish you two could have been with me at the Neil Young concerts back then. Saw him once at the Dallas Opera House. Just him. He came out and did a set with his acoustic and harmonica, then did a set sitting at a baby grand piano and then came out with his electric guitar, wearing shades, laid out a drum beat on an electronic drum kit and then jammed like there was no tomorrow. 😎

His voice is beautiful, and always recognised, I've watched some of his live performances and he's never ready, he comes ambling in feeling in his pockets for things, makes me smile. Completely real no airs and graces and a year older than me. We so far have the same taste, Dire Straits etc. Carry on the good work, from England. ❤

"Straight to your soul" - that sums up Neil Young's music perfectly. He is such a master songwriter, lyricist and musician, delivering poetry with perfect melodies and execution. I recommend SO STRONGLY, his performance of "Helpless" from the brilliant film "The Last Waltz" with the incomparable Joni Mitchell joining him from backstage on gorgeous harmonies. It is another lightening bolt straight to the soul. Beautiful video, thank you for sharing!

This was one of my son’s favorite songs and when he passed away in 2015 at age 31 we played this song at his funeral along with others he loved. I always loved Neil Young and in fact introduced his music to my son, but now each time I hear this I feel a combination of love and good memories with my son mixed with melancholy. I miss my son every day.

I didn’t understand the lyrics completely until just 2 years ago, when I learned that the first verse is Neil’s sentiment, but the second verse is the sentiment of the old man! Thanks again! I love Neil Young ❤ If you want to hear and see something beautiful and magical, check out Greg Lake singing "Still, you turn me on" at the California Jam in 1974. ❤ You will love it. ELP played for about 50 minutes, and it's all fabulous. ❤ Greg did a few songs solo... he sang, played guitar all while chewing gum. It was magic.😂❤

How is it you have never reviewed a Grateful Dead song? They have a huge catalog of songs (~600) and play many different genres. Some might recommend starting with "Truckin" which is about the experiences of the band or you might want to start with "Standing on the Moon" which is a very emotional song.

Poignant lyrics: I miss the days when songs were so thought provoking....In my opinion: it made people be more introspective and spawned thoughts: put-forth in finding their OWN place regarding relationships to others in the world....and, what that actually MEANT - to others, and themselves.
