This is a great live performance of his. You didn't play the beginning where he explains that the song was written about an old caretaker/foreman that lived on Neil's ranch taking care of the place. And you're right, it's a beautiful song.
@nflr929 ай бұрын
The "old man" who was the inspiration for this song was a man name Louis who was the caretaker on a ranch he bought in California when he was just 25 years old. The caretaker asked, "How'd such a young man come to be able to afford a big ranch like this?" Neil answered, "Just lucky, Lou. Really lucky..."

I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 77 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

Expanding on Barbara’s comment, there’s another video of the same performance which includes Neil’s introduction to the song. It explains his owning a California ranch (the Paradise he mentions) purchased shortly prior on which he met the caretaker (the Old Man) he retained to work for him and to whom he took a liking. It was this “old man” he wrote the song to.

There is an intro to this song where he talks about this ranch he bought and with the ranch came a caretaker who had been then for quite some time. That caretaker was the inspiration for this song. Another great one from this same live show is 'Hey Hey My My' where he adds harmonica to the mix. Good stuff!

Well...this goes on my best of reactions playlist. 🙂 I sure wish you two could have been with me at the Neil Young concerts back then. Saw him once at the Dallas Opera House. Just him. He came out and did a set with his acoustic and harmonica, then did a set sitting at a baby grand piano and then came out with his electric guitar, wearing shades, laid out a drum beat on an electronic drum kit and then jammed like there was no tomorrow. 😎

I saw a comment about this elsewhere indicating that it's important to remember when this song was written, 1971. So many older people in America were aghast at the younger generation back then: long hair, free love, anti-Vietnam, racial protests. Neil Young is just saying we're really not all that different. I will be you someday. That resonates with me, because I grew up listening to older people complain about young folks: their music, fashion, morals. Now I hear people I went to high school with saying the exact same things about kids today, with no sense of irony at all. His lyric "Doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you..." are his inner thoughts about how it's essentially "no trouble at all" for him to keep the old man on at the ranch...a place he's probably worked for most of his life... It didn't take much, for Neil, to do this for the old caretaker...even though Neil's kindness and generosity probably meant the whole world to the old man... Some deep, sad, beautiful stuff....

Wonderful! This is one of the first songs I ever learned to sing outside of church! I didn’t understand the lyrics completely until just 2 years ago, when I learned that the first verse is Neil’s sentiment, but the second verse is the sentiment of the old man! Thanks again! Here is another great Neil Young song, “Cowgirl in the Sand”. I’ll copy the lyrics below. This is a live version from a big concert, but Neil is playing solo. One of his greatest: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXqzlKKvbZarhLssi=FYRCeB31UAtCz9wC Lyrics: Hello, cowgirl in the sand (hello, cowgirl in the sand) Is this place at your command? Can I stay here for a while? Can I see your sweet, sweet smile? Old enough now to change your name When so many love you is it the same? It's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game Hello, ruby in the dust (hello, ruby in the dust) Has your band begun to rust? After all the sin we've had I was hopin' that we'd turn bad Old enough now, to change your name When so many love you is it the same? It's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game Hello, woman of my dreams (hello, woman of my dreams) Is this not the way it seems? Purple words on a gray background To be a woman and to be turned down Old enough now to change your name When so many love you is it the same? It's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game
