Same age as Neil Young, from same province, Ontario, I am thinking how he (and I ) seemed to believe he would never be old as an old man. i.e. in our mentality. Thinking that he (and I) did not need to relate to the old man's wisdom and ways; we were the new generation and we were going on with the new ways. Now, at 77, having left home to go to the war in Vietnam with the American armed forces, while Neil and his kind went on to fame, in part by protesting against us. We both had love lost as the old man did.

This song is always complicated for me, and really makes me emotional. My dad and I had a very contentious relationship throughout most of my life, except towards the end when he died. And ironically, not only did we look so much alike, but also in character. I catch myself thinking , saying and doing things that he would. “Old man look at my life. I’m a lot like you were” really hits home .

My dad passed in 22’. For 4 years we worked every day doing plumbing. During that time I got to know him as a person rather than a parent, with a full past and history. He told me about how he moved around the country in his 20s w his bell bottoms and boots. After he died I didn’t know what to do I moved across the country and up the easy coast trying to figure out my next move. One day this song came on and I cried like I never had. he was young and on the move once and I am too.

You can find some, in other continents too, I guess. Like this norwegian singer, song writer and record producer, Aurora, who crafts her musical art mostly by herself, as she wishes. Personally, her songs in her albums are not always for me (she's a "pop singer", and I'm mostly metal, with a bit blues, rock, folk, and I've enjoyed Neil Young for about 30 years now), but when it comes to live performances, she's great, especially in acoustic set up. She's not the new Neil Young or Aerosmith, for sure, but there's still some talent on earth, that being said maybe not really in main stream music industry. In exemple among many others here in YT: AURORA Live from COP26 | UMA Entertainment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3mzeoOahc2IhpI She has plenty of live sessions, where she sometimes varies, from slightly to completely, her rendition, as she feels it in the moment. It's worth to dig a bit (here on YT). Maybe you won't like it or her, but at least there're still creativity, talent and genuine renditions, even if it's not that easy to find.

Here, NY explains what prompted him to write this song: 'About that time when I wrote Heart of Gold, and I was touring, I had also-just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time-I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today. And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avila and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, "Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?" And I said, "Well, just lucky, Louis, just real lucky." And he said, "Well, that's the darnedest thing I ever heard." And I wrote this song for him.'

Thank you for appreciating it. I was born in 1957 also and I just turned 67. Close to dad and love the music that he loved. I grew up with music from the 40s and 50s and I appreciate everything that I got to do with my dad because my parents died and I wish we had more of those special moments. Thank you for loving your dad.
