@Steven Ross-watt Agreed. A 5-min wide open test is kind of useless for most racing (except apparently boat racing, which makes sense). I would not be surprised if IMSA racecar engines would fail this test, and they are some of the more reliable race engines (because of the duration of IMSA races I reckon).
@ray_collins5 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of endurance engine builders that dyno at those levels for hours. If you're doing stuff like Baja, NASCAR, or Offshore Endurance, you really will be running WOT for minutes (or hours) at a time, for a whole day, and then again the next week. Then again, those engines are way bigger than 260ci.

A dyno could just be a big propeller in a tank of water to create resistance, the water would heat up slowly soaking the energy from the prop shaft. Torque and RPM is all that is needed to get a power measurement
@philipmacduffie76125 жыл бұрын
@@idgaf5252 You have to have some means of measuring reactionary force. If it was a prop how would you measure torque? Since the work done to the fluid would be quite hard to quantify unless you measured load in the driveshaft. That said the prop would also need to change load to allow you to hold the engine at a given speed which is a pretty useful function of an engine dyno. The hydraulic absorber accomplishes all that with minimal fuss and thus the reason most engine dynos are made this way.
@philipmacduffie76125 жыл бұрын
@@carltonbankz9273 Not as simple as it sounds a 13 second sweep requires high peak flow. A long duration test needs thermal capacity. 1200hp would raise 400 gallons of water to about 150f in 7 minutes. I'm making some guesses here.
