My first test drive of the Nemesis electric supercar created by Ecotricity's Dale Vince.

Fully Charged is an online show hosted by Robert Llewellyn (Red Dwarf, Scrapheap Challenge, Carpool), which looks at why we need to change how we think about energy consumption now. From looking behind the myths of renewable energy, to seeking the truth about electric cars, Robert Llewellyn demonstrates what the future could have in store for us all.

@snappuppy To be fair, it is nothing like as noisy outside when the car is passing you, but it is a little bit too noisy inside. That said, the Nemesis is essentially a racing car, and it really is a very very fast car. I was driving it really carefully as we were on public roads and I'm very law abiding.

PotatoTornadoable It's the frequency and or pitch of sound. A car can be loud with loud akrapovic. This is exactly the opposite of harmony.

@WestLABoy No, I wish I had the intelligence and foresight to ask that. This was a few years ago and I wasn't filming for Fully Charged, this was for 'How Do They Do It' so the environmental impact wasn't on the agenda. Figures like that would be very useful, plus realistic figures for the cost of extraction and transportation. I have heard suggestions that a realistic estimate for average ICE car is from 400g Co2 per klm upward

"regen braking doesn't make any sense". Well there's a "tiny little company" called ""Tesla"" doing some 60kW regen braking on a rearwheel driven Sedan. And it keeps the mechanical brakes unused ;)
@fdk7014
@fdk7014 10 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Maybe it should be called "regenerative slowing down" instead. If you really need to brake hard then I guess applying most braking power on the front wheels makes sense but that's not what regen braking normally does.

@UNITYN And in that calculation you have it in a nutshell. It's not only that electricity is cheaper, but also the car is massively more efficient at using the energy stored in the batteries/
@LoanwordEggcorn

It's gear noise, probably due to straight cut racing gears. They're efficient, but noisy. Most street cars use helical cut gears which are a bit less efficient but silent.

Nice ride. I must disagree with the idea that regen on the rear wheels is problematic in any way. It doesn't seem to bother the Tesla, and it works fine in my Fiero conversion. Most of the time I don't need to use the brakes at all.

@BatmanBSD You may have a point, I am a big fan of what Tesla are doing, however, to call the Nemesis a 'rough prototype' is a little cruel, it was exactly that last year, it's now a very well finished, beautifully engineered and amazingly fast car. I wish I had the time/budget to shoot a better show about it, about what they've done to make it work so well, One day.

As a "personal project" this thing is awesome. However, as production ready EVs are nearly here on the market, we are all expecting more out of them. "Just don't press the red button." I thought he was joking at first.

btw the thing about regen not making sense on the rear wheels because you need strong braking at the front is just not true. it's true that the strongest braking will normally be on the front wheels but not every braking is an emergency braking

In your talk with the refinery, did a number for kWh per liter of petrol refined ever come up? This is a number I've been dying to get my hands on. I've heard so many different figures over the years that my head is spinning. The latest, from Nissan at 7.5 kWh / U.S. gallon, doesn't seem to have any support behind it, although its the one some people are using as definitive.

I like the idea of two motor drive and belt too if they have longer life and higher efficiency than chain drive. the car could probably do with a bit of sound insulation though. and despite the image of lotus as a lean car maker (which they have foolishly declared war on now) I think a car can be made much lighter still.

@UNITYN ...and, tell me if I'm wrong, same distance at £5.50 means you have to stop and refill 5 times. If you have to stop for let's say 4 hours to charge (and I think it's more), you are 20 hours late, supposing you travel at the same speed. Perfect :)

The car is supposed to be sold for about the same price as a Ferrari. So it's a bit expensive for me. However, it is a very very cool car. One thing which could make it even cooler is to have a metal or hardened plastic cover over the red button, kinda of like the ones they have in fighter jets to launch missiles. That would be AWESOME!

There is very little chanse that my post will be answered, but why this car has "neutral" position on it's selector? Since it don't have regen, i think neutral don't make any sense, exept if this car have a "creep" function, because it seems like in the car without regen or creep "released throttle" = "neutral". Same thing in Twizy.

Hmm. This probably shouldn't be a huge surprise, but that motor sound reminds me of electric trains. And high-speed trains in particular make some fascinating sounds. (but the really interesting sounds apparently have to do with thyristors, rather than electric motors.

I didn't quite catch that: is it a modified sports car, or an original design from the ground up? It's gorgeous either way. I grew up with electric wheelchairs, and maybe because of that I don't find the sound that appealing. More sound insulation would help, but it would be cooler to mutate that sound into something sexier, analogous to the way they do it with combustion engine mufflers. Meanwhile, there are filters that reduce the high frequency noise from soundtracks...just saying. :-)

I think once Tesla emerged he decided to leave it to the pros, plus they've done a lot over the past few years with Ecotalk, Ecotricity, and soon to provide Broadband. I guess it showed the car industry that electric was feasible at the time, that it could work and still give some performance.

The 'argument' against IC engines is simple. ICEs are only 15% energy efficient at the wheels. Think of it this way Heat = Energy and ICEs radiate enormous amounts of heat from their cooling and exhaust systems. A kWh costs approx the same be it from a fuel bowser or a wall socket. For cars with equivalent performance an EV uses 1/10th as much energy as an ICE powered car. That's purely down to the fact that ALL ICEs convert 85% of the fuel they consume into waste heat.

what's the charge time Robert? Dale says the pack is 36kWh to charge, at 3p per kWh (night tariff) thats about £1.08 for a full charge from zero! My car does 35mpg and costs £71.40 to fill and does around 550 mile per fill. so 108 per 100 miles equtes to roughly £5.50 for the same distance that costs me over 70 quid! 20000 miles = £3060 my car 20000 miles = £216 the nemesis Thats a saving of £2844 per year on 20k miles!

how many channels you got robert? The one thing that is holding the market back is price, Yes it will save you money in x ammount of years but shelling out over a 100 grand on a half decent elctric car is just not going to happen for the majority of us! in order for these cars to start selling they need to be aimed towards familys and not the high end market! they need to be practical! After that point is there any plans 4 you to go and test out the 3 electric renault cars that are due out soon?

Acually you're wrong. There is some recent research where they try o develop those concepts (loops under the surface of motorways etc.). In my opinion the perfect solution as you can travel long distances and reach your destination with the independent range of only 100 miles. But as I said,...it's just research in some university labs we do.

The Tesla Roadster makes turbine noises at highway speeds and on hard accelerations. Overall, it is much quieter than this car and more practical for that matter. The Tesla Model S is, so far, the quietest electric car that I have ever heard. The Nissan Leaf is pretty quiet as well. This one just seems to be really loud and annoying. Some home-built electric cars also have noise problems. Production electric cars have sound engineering and rarely have noise issues.
@_Piers_
@_Piers_ 13 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...One of the problems electric cars have is that quite a few people have to drive more than their range say once a month or so. So those people generally wouldn't consider an electric car, at the moment. What if all electric cars had a standard battery expansion conector in their boot, then we could rent a battery for the weekend and have a 300mile range car when we need it...and not when we dont.

Also 2000HP going to only 2 wheels is completely idiotic. There is no point where you would be able to go full throttle without going out of control or the electronic stability and traction control from kicking in. Why not make it AWD?
