Yup! I remember reading up about her. Though she moved to the UK I believe at an early age, some of her authentic Cockney accent shows through in the video. Around that time a LOT of Black Europeans would emulate an African-American accent in the music they made, as it was very popular at the time.

This was huge in the MTV days. She is from Stockholm Sweden and here's what the song is about. The song title refers to "Buffalo", a group of photographers, models, musicians, hair and makeup artists, etc. formed by fashion stylist Ray Petri, of which group Cherry, Morgan, and McVey were all members.[3] A buffalo stance is, Cherry told The New York Times, "an attitude you have to have in order to get by. It's not about fashion but about survival in inner cities and elsewhere."[4] The song's title is also a reference to the Malcolm McLaren song "Buffalo Gals" (1983), which "Buffalo Stance" samples.[5] Other samples came from Rock Steady Crew's "Hey You", and the saxophone break is from the band Miami's song "Chicken Yellow" (1974).[6]

The Godmother of Triphop... the nurturer of The Bristol Sound. Eternal praise be to Neneh Cherry... she used the money she made off this release to fund Massive Attack's seminal Blue Lines album... when "Unfinished Sympathy" needed a real orchestra to play the string section because the synths "didn't sound right", she booked them a real orchestra... legend says, she even payed their rent so that they could focus on recording the album. All the love. 8)>

Ah Neneh Cherry! What a beautiful lady (Like Lex) Many boys, mens crushed on that lady. Lol. She's mixed race (Swedish mother, African father). She had a strong British accent for sure. This song and video was big during the late '80s, early '90s. British rap, Eurodance. Along with other ones from the late '80s and '90s like "Money Love", " Buddy X", "7 Seconds", "Manchild" Check those out. She actually came out of the UK punk scene. Was part of a post-punk group, The Slits as one of their singers. Soulful voice. She can also rap. Very versatile artist. Some of her solo careers songs had rock (guitars) influences as well. She did some alternative hip, trip hop as well. She has a pretty daughter (Mabel) that is an R&B singer and big in the UK. Also a a paternal half brother (also mixed race) Eagle Eye Cherry , who was pretty good during the '90s/'00s as well, he was alternative rock, post-grunge "Save Tonight" (huge hit) , "Are You Still Having Fun" , "Skull Tattoo" were good, Check them out, too.

As a few people have remarked, the song is harkening back to one of the first breakout hip-hop singles, "Buffalo Gals," by Malcolm McLaren and the World's Famous Supreme Team. McLaren had been a proprietor of a fashion boutique in the UK with his then-wife Vivienne Westwood, then shifted into music management, handling the New York Dolls in their final days and, most infamously, the Sex Pistols. After the Pistols imploded, he went around from place to place collecting diverse musical styles and assembling them into an album called DUCK ROCK. During that trip he met WFST, a DJ duo who had a dead of night radio show that was hugely popular for breaking rap songs and doing live scratching; they do interstitials all through the album "Buffalo Gals" blended beats and scratching with Appalachian square-dance calling, with Malc yelling, "Two buffalo gals goin' round the outside, round the outside, round the outside." Which was a callout to the Buffalo fashion scene others have posted about. In the album mix of this song, you'll hear samples from the McLaren song mixed in with the other riffs.

Malcolm definitely knew how to capture the zeitgeist of many moments. From the Sex Pistols era, to Bow Wow Wow (They've already reacted to the worst song from the band), to the Duck Rock album (Keith Haring/Dondi White cover art, Rock Steady Crew's introduction of breakdancing to a wider audience, World Famous,...), to his "Fans" album with hip-hopera that predated Beyonce's rendition of "Carmen" - "Madame Butterfly" being my favorite track from the "Fans" album, and his "Deep in Vogue" which paid tribute to the Vogue scene even before Madonna.

FINALLY you got to this. This was the jam. Cherry has OG UK punk roots (a member of the Slits) and was a pirate radio rap DJ. There's "daisy age" style, her stepdad free jazz legend Don Cherry, Bomb the Bass techno, triphoppers Massive Attack, all mixed up in a stew that was very cool in its day. People of a certain age will still break a hip on the dance floor if this is busted out of the cobwebs.

Cherry was born as Neneh Mariann Karlsson in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of Monika "Moki" Karlsson (1943-2009), a Swedish painter and textile artist, and the musician Ahmadu Jah (1936-2018). Jah was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, the son of a tribal chief, and went to Stockholm to study engineering at university.[5] Her paternal grandmother was called Neneh, and her maternal grandmother was called Mariann, a name she has never been referred to as. Cherry's parents separated early and her mother married the influential American jazz musician Don Cherry, who helped raise Cherry since birth. Cherry took her stepfather's surname.[3] From her mother's side, Cherry also has a half-brother, musician Eagle-Eye Cherry. From stepfather Don Cherry's side, she has a stepsister, violinist Jan Cherry, and a stepbrother, jazz musician David Ornette Cherry. Through her father Ahmadu Jah's marriage to Maylen Jah (née Bergström), Cherry is the half-sister of singer Titiyo and record producer Cherno Jah. In 1970, Cherry's parents, Moki and Don Cherry, bought and converted an old Swedish schoolhouse in rural Tågarp in Hässleholm.[6] In the early 1970s, the family moved to the United States, when Don Cherry taught at Dartmouth College.[7] In 1977 the family bought a loft in New York City in the same building as Talking Heads members Nick and Tina who they befriended. Cherry dropped out of school at 14 and moved to London.[8]

Yes there is so much going on in this song, which is why it's so fascinating. This song highlights her talent. I'm surprised because I thought for sure Lex would react when Neneh spoke with that accent. Neneh's not from the USA, but rather is from Europe. Thanks for reacting. I thought you both would be a little more impressed with this song, and with her.

Back in the day, in the clubs lot's of the ladies would literally stand in a "buffalo stance" for the duration of this song, when it was played. I was only 12 or so when this came out, but this is what I later heard from some of my older friends, and later on KZbin videos reminiscing on when this jam came out in '88 or '89. My best friend's sister used to listen to this record in '89/'90. This brings back memories!

Cool! True. Also, Neneh came out of the UK punk scene when she was younger (Artsy, new wave punk band The Slits). Before Neneh ventured off into alternative hip hop, Eurodance, and trip hop scene. So, they were familiar with her.

Buffalo Stance is a reference to Buffalo Bill great Bruce Smith who would pose with his arms crossed after big plays...and yes it is correct that it is about a girl trying to fend off a being coerced into being put on the street.

Buffalos are herd animals, so it's like when you and your friends stay close and confident when you go anywhere, as one impenetrable group. Like "make sure you have yourself straight before you approach me because my girls have my back."

Trip-hop, Bristol (UK, England) sound. She was part of that with Massive Attack, Bomb da Bass, Monie Love, Betty Boo, Beatmasters, Cookie Crew, etc. Another song /band which was a big hit and I think encapsulated this style was _House Arrest_ by Krush -- absolute banger!
