Great job! It's weird how traces just pop on the AES. I think it's perhaps related to thickness of the traces and perhaps tiny imperfections on the track at manufacture.
@GlobalGarageAus7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah these consoles are incredibly delicate. The traces are too thin IMO and often burn out and go open circuit. The tiniest black dot on the trace was the only clue. Which revision of board do you think is actually the best? I hear 3-6 are pretty good with bright RGB but my "early" 3-3 is amazing.
@GadgetUK1647 жыл бұрын
I've not seen any visibile differences between the revisions I've looked at, some some have slightly noisey sound. I think there's an article on neo-geo forum about some of the mods required on some of the 3- boards to get cleaner sound. Once they've had RGB bypass mod done they all look the same tbh, maybe the 3-5 and 3-6 have marginaly better RGB!?!

I still don't understand how this was sold with a description that didn't match the actual state of the unit. I see that happen so many times on eBay when the sellers just wish to disclaim all responsibility for the goods -- really makes me wonder how much of what is marked that way really is working still, just needing some minor cleanup, whether it be retro games, appliances, whatever. Great catch and glad you could get it restored!

I don't know either, I suspect Japanese sellers don't want to disappoint the buyer so they may say it's worse than what it actually is to avoid dissapointment. I was very pleased with this pickup.

I think It's pretty obvious, they used the wrong power supply. So it wouldn't turn on due to too much power, probably, and this also probably caused the short that broke that trace.

I wanna learn how to do what you did! Amazing trouble shooting.. My AES is fine although I do have to remove and re-insert carts from time to time when I power it up. I Just ordered a cleaning kit. Hopefully it will help. I've had my AES since 1991 and never cleaned it or any of the carts... lol..

The "regulator" on thr 3-4 is actually a transistor, not a regulator. Its purpose is simply to burn off excess voltage as heat. You need to use 7.5-9V max on these, with about 2-3A. Using higher will kill the transistor ans possibly the diode, using lower will cause all sorts of unstable behavior.
@CaseTheCorvetteMan4 жыл бұрын
5v consoles were also available right up to the 3-6, no idea why they ever sold two different versions like that because in my experience the 5v ones tend to have issues with the larger games, where the units using the internal 5v regulator never seem to have that issue, if you use a model 1 Mega Drive transformer.

👍😎👌Excellent video. I have a question. What do you think is the cause of the green exception error handling illegal address screen? I have the Unibios 4.0 installed and on certain games that screen will pop up and end up causing me to have to start the game completely over. I can't seem to get past level 5 in the game Viewpoint without the green screen popping up. If their is a solution to this problem feel free to share bud thanks.👍😁👌

Thank you for this video as it’s helping me to investigate why my old AES unit’s video is garbled. I wouldn’t have thought to press on the board myself. But now that I’m doing this (pressing), would you say it’s a meaningful indicator if pressing on a specific location makes the video even worse, not better? I eyeballed the area (Immediately to the left of the cartridge slot for what it’s worth) and did not notice anything obviously wrong. I’m wondering if I should investigate more closely. I figure it’s probably worth a shot, but would love to hear your opinion. Thank you!
@hardkore3603 жыл бұрын
just from your description, it sounds like solder joints are lose, your pressing in the area makes these solder joints make contact again when you provide pressure to that area. That's what I would look out for 1st, then probe with a multimeter to test for continuity, then you can pinpoint any problem areas. Hope that helps!

Glad to see you back \doing what you do best Global. I really wanted to see this AES for sure from your post postings in the comment section regarding it. I posted this on the Neo-Geo thread on Atariage.com for you. Its on page 290, post #7232 for you to view. atariage.com/forums/topic/223548-the-official-neo-geo-thread/page-290 Thank you as always Kind sir. Keep up the great work you always do. Anthony..

Global Garage You're welcome Global. Always a pleasure. That Ebay seller that I mention previously sold me a fixable AES unit. I know a gentleman in the U.S. that repairs AES units. and it was shipped to him.. Maybe in the near future Global, If I purchase more from the seller, would you be interested on fixing one for me? Would be a good project to work on for sure. 8^) Anthony...

It's not an early rev btw! Early revs have the pro chipset! 3- was mid way through life of the AES.

it's cool that you make custom power supplies.
@GlobalGarageAus7 жыл бұрын
+keiran bowes Thanks! Yep I started making them back in 2010 as I needed a few for my own retro consoles, especially the Japanese ones. People started asking if I would make one for them and the idea grew from there. The entire range has Australian pins, but they are universal 100-240v so you can run them anywhere in the world with a simple travel pin adapter. goo.gl/GOm61c

hello i'm from italy and i wrote you for a problem... I bought a neo geo at the flea market complete with viedo cable, power supply, a game and two joypads all in good conditions but if I connect it to the TV, nothing can be seen. Given your skill and experience could you tell me how to proceed step by step to understand what the problem is? keep in mind that I am not as good as you but I am quite good at electronics and I have almost all the equipment you need and the necessary manual skills but unfortunately I lack your experience! if I turn on the console WITHOUT the game card the screen becomes BLUE if instead I turn it on with the game for a moment you see a green screen with ASCII characters written vertically after which the screen turns black. I haven't opened the console yet but I'll do it if you tell me how to proceed. thank you for your very interesting videos and if you want to spend some of your time helping me. thank you

hello I disassembled the console and I must say that the motherboard seems in good condition only that it is full of "add-ons" as you can see from the photos. there are in fact two additional circuits (it seems for the power supply) is this normal or is it a repair? what does your expert eye deduce? can it be the game cartridge? can you indicate which ROM is in case you want to replace it with the test one? thank you for your time drive.google.com/open?id=1cKc9KvYwI03j5jWT6LrsoIe90yf8oRiz

@GlobalGarageAus7 жыл бұрын
Yes they seem to be unfortunately.

Ok, there is a rather common misconception being put forward in this video, in that the serial number being low means better RGB. Totally incorrect. The BEST RGB outputs are the later models, 3-5 and 3-6, as they had the correct capacitors and resistors on the outputs. MKL on the forums will back this fact. The earlier consoles have the WRONG capacitor/resistor values, causing wrong output levels. The correct values are 470uF and 75ohm, early models can be corrected by replacing the originals with these values. If you test on a high end RGB capable display, the difference will be obvious, blacker blacks, brighter whites, better range.
@lookitskazzy10 ай бұрын
This didn't age well. 3-6 is known to have the worst RGB, thanks in large part to unnecessary traces running right under the crystal.
@CaseTheCorvetteMan10 ай бұрын
@@lookitskazzy cut those tracks and it has the best RGB output. It's a 20 minute job at most.

Fair point... but this is just Aussie slang. It just means someone who makes a silly mistake.

I really thought it addressed that the seller didn't care to put a proper description of the fault, probably to make the console more attractive. You can also see that the rubber feet were missing, indicates that the seller most likely had a look inside the console. "Doesn't turn on", that's the one thing that the console really did do out of the box. That's kind of dick move to me =)
