Whenever a war starts, drags on, and escalates, people’s natural tendency is to think about the pieces on the board and how they move or can move. But history shows us that the pieces off the board are often more important. Throughout the period when Athens and Sparta fought the Peloponnesian War, the major city-states of Greece dismissed Macedonia as a region colonized by Greeks that was almost barbaric and militarily irrelevant. Sparta won the Peloponnesian War and was defeated by Thebes some time later. But the real lurker in the shadows during the Peloponnesian War was Macedonia, because it was Macedonia that defeated the hegemonic city of Thebes and took control of all of Greece and then Asia Minor and created an empire that stretched all the way to the borders of the Hindu kingdoms in India. The war in the Middle East has been going on since the creation of Israel in 1948, but it does not seem to me that it can end with the total hegemony of that country in the entire region for the simple reason that there are not enough Israelis to conquer all the neighboring countries and occupy their territories. At some point in the future Israel will really start to be attacked and destroyed by its neighbors and it should not seem to any averagely informed person that the Americans would want to die in a nuclear war in defense of a belligerent, condemned, hated and doomed state. So the question now is: who is silently lurking in the shadows? Maybe it is Mexico, because the Mexicans may be tempted to reconquer territories lost to the Americans in the past. Or maybe it is Canada, a country whose people present themselves as friends of the United States but which in reality despise the Americans with all their guts. If the United States commits too many resources to a major war in the Middle East (assuming it doesn't escalate into nuclear war) it may end up being invaded and divided by Mexicans and Canadians. The very fact that this option is ignored or dismissed by commentators (and Trump's friends too) is evidence that they may be missing the larger historical picture whose development those playing the war game are unable to see because there are pieces off the board.

@ralphbernhard17573 күн бұрын
"When two neighbouring countries fight each other, just know the USA visited one." - Nelson Mandela (Region: Southern Africa/Big picture timestamp: Cold War). The statement is not quite correct. When two neighbours fight each other, just know that an empire has been there previously. It's the old joke that "If two fish are fighting, the British Empire has been there." *It is a truism about imperialism in general, and how divide-and-rule works.* Set up neighbours against each other, using a variety of ever-consistent techniques and strategies. With absolute certainty, the tribal leaders of Europe joked the same way about the Roman Empire, openly flaunting their "Pax Romana" whilst in the background covertly favoring one "neighbor", whilst setting them up against the others, using whatever reasoning it wanted. Outsiders will come to a state (also covertly politically or via NGOs as the strategy of "cultural- and political capture"), and these outsiders try to lay down the foundation for division by setting up the "new-found friend" against its neighbours and if it is unsuccessful in one "state" (status quo), it will simply go to the neighbours and try the same. The more neighbours, the more chances of a successful division of powers, which is beneficial to the "divider". Because if these neighbours all end up fighting, the "divider" vacuums off gains (of various kinds) in the background. Such implemented and leveraged divisions do not necessarily stem from evil intent, since most of the participants in a divide-and-rule strategy have absolutely no idea _that_ they have become "actors" in a great game, the scope of which they remain ignorant of. Even those with good intentions (political doves) can create division. No amount of agreements, accords, negotiation or skills will ever stop the "dividers", for nothing they sign will stop their divisive ways. *Any resources-rich region of the planet like the Ukraine or West Asia, where the interests run deep, is a perfect example of the above, which is globally practiced today. The only thing which changed between the Roman Empire and the current times is technology, which vastly shrunk the world and the REACH of the controlling empire.*

Let's face it, all these discussions are effectively debated and prefaced under the collective belief that there is some kind of 'international rules based order'. The 'international rules based order', even if such a thing exists, is still essentially defined by the US on any given day. To quote Humpty Dumpty, "When I use a word" From Alice in Wonderland, Humpty Dumpty says, "When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean-neither more nor less". "Which is to be master" In response to Alice asking if he can make words mean many different things, Humpty Dumpty replies, "The question is, Which is to be master---that's all". 'Humpty Dumpty', of course, eventually climbs too high and 'has a great fall'....

Because Iran is far away and secondly has never invaded anyone in recent memory, unlike friends of Uncle Sam, Saddam's Iraq or Bibi's Israel.

Most of us know the US and UK overthrew the reformist gov't of Mossadegh of Iran August 1953. His reforms included the nationalisation the Anglo-Persion Oil co (today called BP, British Petroleum). We often omit, however, that after the coup the US/UK supported regime of the Shah (King) of Iran, who titled himself the "King of Kings" in 1967. He was one of the richest people in the world at the time (NY Times). His S.A.V.A.K., secret police - which had close ties with the CIA and MI6 - responsible for killing and torturing 1000s of political opponents to the regime. If the Shah is the West's answer to the threat of Communism, we ought to think what the West is fighting for, not what it's fighting against. Only few months later, June 1954, Washington overthrew the gov't of Arbenz Guatemala. The same excuse was used, as with Mossadegh, Arbenz was "communist". Edward Bernays, the "Father of Public Relations", admitted the responsibility for the coup in his biography. It was propaganda stunt, for which Bernays' takes some pride. But, the truth is Arbenz modeled his gov't to FDR's gov't in the US. ... As a result of the coup Guatemala was ruled by a series of brutal dictators, responsible for killing an estimated 200K. (Journal of Democracy "A Shock to Guatemala's System" August 2023) A side note of the coup in Guatemala, Che Guevara was in Guatemala during the coup. He and Fidel Castro both noted that Washington manipulated the free press of Guatemala under Arbenz. This led to their decision to control the press in post-revolutionary Cuba.
