Yahtz touched on this but some of the optional presents that you can collect in the game really are straight up puzzles (and fun ones at that). The clever ways they have you change up your route or conserve your shots so you can get the right cards to reach them really did require me to think hard about where to go and what to do at times in a way that was charmingly reminiscent of other first person puzzle games like Portal. I might even go as far as to say that a game consisting of only the present puzzles would work on its own.

honestly I think the guns are cards just because that makes them easy to see and identify from far away and while moving at high speed, and because it lends itself to an easy, clear way of showing how many of each you have at any given time. It also more intuitively works with the idea of discarding them for benefits than just tossing a gun away. Why does throwing a rocked launcher over your shoulder give you a grappling hook? Dunno, that's weird, why would I do that. But "discard the cyan card and you get a grappling hook" just works within the context of a game.

Tbh whenever Yahtzee gives any game their GOTY and rarely criticize them, it makes me intrigued. He is known to nitpick EVERYTHING, especially if it's AAA game. So, if a game comes out and he doesn't have a bad thing to say, it makes me want to play it. Now it didn't happen to me all the time (Spiritfarer or Obra Dinn aren't my kind of games), but at least it makes me pay attention.

Absolutely loved playing through this game. Over a hundred levels that will make you want to keep repeating them to see if you can get your time down even further than the last time. There're also level rushes after you fully unlock character's romance routes to keep you busy, especially White's Hell Rush, where you have ONE LIFE to complete ALL 96 main levels in ONE GO.....Whoever made that Challege is sadistic, but people have been beating that in 41 minutes now....

If this was the attitude everyone took about every bad game, the industry would have become doubly more complacent and rotten, if that's even possible. If you don't complain, you are not going to get anything better next time. Imagine if everyone took this attitude when Cyberpunk dropped, would we have gotten so many fixes? You know the answer so do I. Don't care for it personally? Try not to check out stuff about it.

The thing I like most about the story is that it all feels very... Aware. It's a story about a crime gang who got themselves killed and ended up in heaven "Doing God's Dirty Work" by purging Demons, all while wearing its heart on its sleeve and being more than happy to dive into wacky bullshit when it wants to. It wants to tell a story, yes, but the game never once felt like it was expecting you to take Violet's line about her tits being heavy, yellow's character, or really anything else in that vein seriously. What DOES work when it goes serious is in the memories (and in the later points of the story, but spoilers). You get to experience the tragic story of a gang that took one last job that was going to set them for life, only to end in the deaths of every member. You get to see their struggles, their thoughts, and when the story does take itself seriously, you can really tell, compared to the (mostly) goofier main story. Overall, I feel Neon White, in the story department, is pretty good. Not amazing, I wasn't on the edge of my seat wondering if the Heroes would win or not, but it was enjoyable, and was a good vessel for the game's premise that tied itself up fairly well, while presenting some themes that are actually worth thinking about.

I fully agree, people shit on this game's story too much. The whole thing is whacky and random, both in visual style and gameplay, why would the characters ever be any different? Ever since the time OFF cane out, but especially since Undertale went BIG, the indie industry has consistently overtaken the AAA industry in many ways. More and more industry paragons fall (CDPR) and more and more indies become the best games ever made (Omori good example). Any genre I even remotely care about, except multiplayer FPS, is better covered by an indie. Need plot? Omori is second only to Nier: Automata, or so they say. Need deep strategy? Dwarf Fortress, Dominions 5, Aurora4X, take your pick. Platformers? Spelunky is actually one of the less great ones. Metroidvania? Many picks. Horror? Many kinds, especially dread horror, but also Space Beast Terror Fright. Survival? Minecraft used to be an indie game, but I like Unreal World and Cataclysm. City Management? Rimworld, and again his father Dwarf Fortress. Competitive Visual Novels? Play Monster Prom! Grunt-level Empire building? Do One Hour, One Life or Foxhole count? Roleplay? Space Station 13 is the home for Syndie-Hating curator ninja! Need I say more? Literally anything the indie industry can do better. Feel free to ask for more! Thanks for reading!

That indies for you, it like some massive wirey vine mess that wizards use different fires on to trim - Platforms, Dark Souls lite, Limbos, Card Battlers, Rimworld lite all just spreading to and fro. I like Card Battlers as a Idea but i swear most games have pretty normal cards to make a deck out of or go full Diablo 3 "You need a full set" to compete.

It's just a way to make it easy for player to know exactly what kind of gun and powerup they currently have and are available one the battle field. Plus this game has non of the elements of a card system. You don't make decks, you don't draw cards or anything.

Apparently card battlers/Slay the Spire-likes have one of the biggest markets of any genre if not the biggest genre market for indie games right now. My guess is that a lot of indie devs are just following the immediate money.

@@Tortferngatr I guess card battlers allow you to make a game that is unique enough not to get in legal trouble. A direct result of the arbitrarily applied inconsisten definitions of IP. For some reason incorporating an ancient game mechanic, in this case cards, decreases the likelihood that you will get sued. Possibly because cards were around before the entire idea of intellectual property existed. In the past if you didn't want someone else to use an idea, you kept it secret like an adult instead of arguing about it like children playing soldier "You can't shoot me, I am wearing a bulletproof vest!" "Well I'm not shooting bullets, I am shooting lasers!" "Yeah well, it is laserproof as well!" "You can't do that!" "Mom/Judge!"

The story beats are predictable and definitely written to be kinda corny but the characters are interesting enough that you don't get bored of those segments and the gameplay is just super fun. I personally found red's bonus missions the best.

I am one hundred percent behind Yahtzee saying "How about we try some much-needed positivity?" The way the world is going now, there's SO much negativity to go around, so someone who's known for being negative stepping up and saying "You know what? I'm not going to acknowledge more bad stuff, I want to talk about something good!" is something I can wholeheartedly support. It's the most heroic thing Yahtzee could do at this moment in time and I am here for it. And no, I'm not exaggerating when I call it "heroic"…I could write an essay on why not, but it's the internet and no one cares, so I'll leave it at that. BRAVO, YAHTZ!

I wonder if we could look at the primary color characters the same way as we could the graphical elements: made that way for streamlined processing. Not complex or ornate or unfamiliar, so they don't slow down your video card at a time when they aren't widely available due to other crisis.

Ah, inevitable beach episode: it must be contractually stipulated in all anime contracts. Probably gives the writers some extra time to figure out where the storyline is going and animators some time to work on action scenes. Or more likely, everyone is completely burned out and they need to finally sleep a little.

the thing about the cards is that they are weapons white used before he died, thus linked to his "soul" the same shit as his katana or to save resources because cards are easier to draw than model a entire new gun for each card

Knowing nothing but this review, I feel a parallel to Yahtzee's review of Superhot (which I have played). He enjoyed the gameplay loop, but the between bits were done better here as a break, as opposed to the ones in Superhot, which he say as pretentious and just getting in the way.

It's super weird to see both Dunkey and Yahtzee cover the same game on the same day (even if I'm a day late to this one due to Internet) issues. Even weirder still to have *Yahtzee* be the one who is less harsh about criticizing the dialogue. Still, given the praise in both for everything else, clearly this game must be doing something right. The majority of games (that aren't just gambling scams like Blizzard's latest product) wish they could say even that much.

I've seen a lot of people question the guns being cards. Take away the "card" part and display it as just a gun in the corner. Hell, keep the single colour aesthetic if you like. It just doesn't leap out while you're focused on the blistering speed of traversal. The cards can be seen as just a block of colour on the UI in your peripheral vision, as well as within the environment itself. Not sure if the guns were just guns at any point in the development, but if so... SOMEONE came up with the smart idea of making the guns more readily apparent from a distance and in our peripheral vision. Amazing (and underrated) touch of game design.
