Yeah, really sad. I liked the first season. But then it went downhill very fast. And when Ciri meets the Rats in season 3 - and they glorified it - that was really the nail in the coffin for me. I liked the Ciri storyline in the books because it really had a deeper meaning and showed some really toxic relationship that form when you are desperate. But in the series Ciri just saves herself and is this big hero - this is not empowerment for me, this is brushing off that people go through hard times and maybe go into the wrong direction because they need something to hold on to, and then after they experience and learn, then they get strength and learn to fight for themselves - but not right from the beginning. And the episode with Ciri in the desert - it was so good in the books. And sooo horrible / hard to watch in the series. It was very cringe - not because of the actress - but because of the writing. I could not believe how bad it was.

Screaming, crying, throwing up. Edited to add, I am not going to watch the new anime although I didn’t hate the Vesemir one. The thing is, A Little Sacrifice is my favorite of the short stories except for A Shard of Ice. I love Little Eye, I love Dandelion and I love Geralt’s characterization in this story. The ending absolutely gutted me. I also enjoyed how it just barely touched on the underwater war - the world Geralt lives in is vast and complex and so much more is going on than anything in just the Continent. To expand on it and make Geralt almost certainly a central figure in it, in my opinion, cheapens it. It’s cool because he is NOT a part of it, yet it is happening.

I was so annoyed Netflix decided to greenlight ‘The Rats’ and yet refused to greenlight the Six of Crows spin-off. The Six of Crows was a far more popular and far superior option as it already had two books worth of content to adapt (along with existing plot lines to tie up from the S&B show which was cancelled…) Not to mention The Six of Crows had six perfectly casted actors. No Witcher fan wanted The Rats to get their own spin-off. I don’t why Netflix was so insistent on making a Witcher-Verse when they couldn’t even manage to find reliable success in their main show. It’s mind-boggling because you have this wonderful book series, and on top of that, a game trilogy wherein the most recent game won the literal Game of The Year, and you still mucked up the adaption? People wanted to love this show so bad, and they literally had all the lore and plot lines written for them… and yet.
@madmanarrivednow7 ай бұрын
My theory about why they wanted to do a spin-off about the Rats is making Ciri into a LGBTQ character. Saw a few W3 streamers, who were like: "I play Ciri as a lesbian", when she was written as a bisexual. Which I don't mind... the developers gave that choice to customize some parts of the story, while not influencing the whole narrative. And I am all for that. But some of those streamers don't know, misread, or FULLY ignore the part, where Ciri's relationship was really not healthy. Intentionally. And yes, the Rats were the most annoying plotline of the books. I can fully imagine how the showrunners would totally ignore Ciri was forcefully taken advantage of, roped into drugs, by brats, who wanted to "stick it to the MAN", and make them into rebels against conventions, banished because of their ideologies, and all in all fully positive characters whose last action is protecting Ciri. And we know... WE KNOW, the Rats would've abandon Ciri to save themselves.

In a way, I feel sorry for Liam Hemsworth. Cavill had a much stable career in the industry, when he picked up the part and even that choice was criticized by fans at the early stages. Even with his traction he had to prove his worth. Now that everyone and their grandma loved Cavill in the role, this could mean a career crash for the guy. I know, the season will suck ass, but but I don't want any of the actors to suffer for that, especially when it's an actor who has to work under two shades (his brother, and now his predecessor). Yep, and they basically skipped the whole Brokilon arc, which is arguably the most important part in the story, where Geralt and Ciri meet for the first time, and seals their fate as from that point on they are forever bound. But in the series they skip all that and they make their emotional REUNION as a moment they randomly meet for the first time. And I’m talking about the ending of Something More: “Geralt and Ciri run to each other and embrace like father and daughter. Ciri says, "It's just like they predicted, Geralt! Like they predicted... I'm your destiny? Say it! I'm your destiny?" In reply Geralt says, "You're more than that, Ciri. Much more."

The Witcher book series has two types of stories, both of which are a piece of cake to adapt to screen: 1. Short stories focus on either monster / curse of the week or a specific main character that will develop a bond with Geralt 2. From ToC onward books take a more political tone with many different POVs, just like a political fantasy show (ala GOT) would do. There are some gaps in the books and some issues, but apart from pacing and the order the chapters appear in across the books, majority of it is just perfect to directly adapt. That is especially true when one considers lack of long monologues or thoughts of characters in the story, apart from that one part with Triss in BoE.
@TrykusMykus7 ай бұрын
I fully agree. The long monologues and thoughts of characters were almost exclusively presented in the dialogue of Dandelion and Geralt. Dandelion was the one person who knew Geralt the most, he also was the one person that Geralt respected and appreciated his company. The screenwriters could not catch that. The character of Jaskier in the show is an abomination. Geralt addresses him like he's a pest. Jaskier doesn't even have a horse to ride next to Geralt. Just one example of how the 1st point - characters developing bonds with Geralt - has never been noticed by the screenwriters. They failed to pull a single relationship between Geralt and another character to then put it in the show. And they were all there in the books - in the actions of the characters and in the dialogue. They skipped over the most important short story for the saga (Brokilon - "The Sword of Destiny", the TITULAR short story, as if Sapkowski hasn't made this clear enough that this is THE most important one!). Unfortunately, I feel like Hollywood really lacks smart writers nowadays. These books might have gone over their literally-processing american heads.

@RandalReid7 ай бұрын
@@LNER985 Yeah, I guess I'm not. Playing all the three mainline Witcher games to completion as well as Thronebreaker, reading the Dark Horse mini-series, and the books even before Witcher 3 came out weren't enough for me to be considered a fan. I just have to like them all blindly. Poor me.

Dimensional Traveler here. Came to say where i come from The Witcher's rights were given to HBO from the very beginning, and the show is awesome.

@30CZEchpoint bro, HBO tried to save game of thrones 😢 dumb and dumber didn't listen
@eldara37 ай бұрын
@@sadrakeyhany7477 You're not wrong and those guys obviously shat the bed in the end, but in the interest of fairness, they were left with the unenviable task of trying to finish a series based on source material that simply didn't exist. That doesn't excuse the incompetence bordering on malice, but there were mitigating circumstances. Hisrich and her chosen team of hacks don't even have that excuse Dx

@eldara3 at least I'll give dumb and dumber that, they did finish, however of a trash ending it was

Oh man- I bet in your universe they also kept Master Chief's helmet on in Halo. Though I bet Fallout sucks over there.

As bad as it was at times, i still prefer the old polish tv series that Sapkowski hated to what Netflix did. It had its charm, and it had a soul. Plus beautiful music and an interesting interpretation of Geralt's character. If you don't mind extremely dated effects and questionable changes to lore in the first few episodes, give it a try. Don't expect much, but i think you'll be able to find something to appreciate there.

Although H. Cavill is no longer our Witcher, some ppl in twitter or tumblr are still bashing him for ruining the series by making their own assumption based on past interviews and BTS scenes. He lives in their head rent free now.

Geez... I never knew what happened in season 3 because I didn't watch it. Just seeing glimpses of that in your summary is giving me whiplash. When you first said, they were gonna cancel the final two seasons I thought, they were gonna scrap season 4 and 5 since I already heard the news. But that is wishful thinking on my part...

Finally someone in the West tells it like it is. As someone who has read all the Witcher books, then listened to the audiobooks twice, has 700 hours of fun in The Witcher 3, I hope that this crap without respect for the original will be forgotten and hidden in the depths of history once and for all

Can someone get Denis Villeneuve to read the books and fall in love with them as he did with Dune so he can take care of the next Witcher adaptation? :D

Well if any studios in Europe cared about its authors and writers and made a Witcher series with a similar budget, we would have had something to watch. This way they let a foreign country do the job, who doesn't care (why would they) and we got served a turd.

I wonder if they do another Witcher show (correctly this time) if they could get Henry back. I didn't know about The Witcher before the show, and Henry's passion and charm has gotten me invested in the games too (I'm even planning on buying the books).

He got his other dream job. He's now spearheading the amazon prime "Warhammer 40k" live action series. He's explained this was a life long, childhood dream to him. As someone who loves 40k, and kinda sees myself in cavil, because he's the biggest nerd on the planet. This makes me both happy and hopeful that we'll get something worth the watch. I think more likely if another company gets the rights "Charlie Hunnam" (Jax taylor) Would be a better cast, lookswise (Not actor wise, but we're not getting Cavil back).

I am currently listening to Baptism of Fire and it makes me mad that they turned something so amazing into garbage. The only thing I am glad about is that I see Henry cavill as geralt when I read. Also the rats are pure garbage and irritating. I can't wait for Leo Bonhart.
