Very interesting to hear about the saturation point is when the coral is coloring up.

8.52K subscribers and only 48 likes? That shows how much people in the hobby really care to understand about lighting their reefs. I'm shocked! We are living the times when the fashions of light are more important than the physical and biological aspects of it. Anyway... @39:52 - Ultra violet I love Dana, and have lots of respect for his works, but I can't totally agree with his UV and coloration affirmation in regards to LEDs vs halides, as many of us know for a fact, and Terence Fugazzi also affirmed: "there are many proofs out there"! Problem was in the structure of the sentence when Terence said "...can't grow corals". The right way to ask about UV would be in regards to an "optimal way to resemble natural metabolism and functions, with results in coloration". There are many people who know for a fact, through practical experiences, that the halides will have a huge advantage in coloration and growth of many species of corals, and even zoanthids, responding positively with advantage to halides in comparison to any LED fixtures in the market. Also halides are known to provide a better complete and "stable" spectrum with "whites" that LEDs can't. Another great property of halides, besides the UV, is the emission of IR, which is a question mark among hobbyists, but maybe that could contribute a lot to growth and colors in a natural environment. I guess the true answer for the role of UV will remain as a mystery for now. I choose to believe Dana is true to his affirmations and thoughts with his answer, and that he doesn't know the answer just because there is not enough work done in that area. I believe in his answer to the question as it was presented, but it was incomplete in my opinion because of the way the question was presented. Not his fault! The question wasn't well formulated. Nevertheless this is a great video. Thank you so much!!!!

We should have Dana on again in the near future and discuss this further. It is difficult to sometimes conduct an interview and make it accessible to all. This is why Terence would sometimes redirect the question or summarize some of Dana's thoughts into a new question. It very well may be that LED grow coral just fine, but only get to 85-95% of the efficacy in coloration, metabolism, etc. of a MH lit aquarium. Trade-offs we may be OK with making in light of other LED advantages. Thank you for watching - and you can get those likes and views up by sharing the video!

@@NeptuneSystemsVideo That LEDs "grow corals just fine" we all now. There is a huge difference between the 2 though and it would be great to know why halides will always offer much better colony structure, colors, growth and health in general. Of course... when we have nature as the standard to compare. Proof is in the pudim, there are so many evidences out there, like Terence said. Another thing... please allow Dana to speak more and avoid cutting him off with secondary questions. Thanks!! This is great!

@@Alex_Correa Thanks for the feedback. At this point we believe that its important to understand how to improve LED as we are no doubt not going back to halides. That said, many pro reefkeepers inside our walls believe the success of MH does not lie in the bulb or spectrum, but rather the blanket of of light coverage and beam angles the best reflectors were offering in those last heyday years of MH. We see today's cluster style LED as the equivalent of running a MH with one of those original single plane reflectors in the early days.

@@NeptuneSystemsVideo I forgot you are a company. It wasn't my intention to make you go back to halides at all. Just trying to get the truth about the subject out there. Sorry, but "as equivalent" has been really relative in regards to it's meanings. The 2 light sources are very different in many aspects and one does not substitute the other. It is better to say one prefers either of them than to use the word equivalent IMO. Anyway, great talking to you.

Terrance ifd you do a great job but your talking to much mate, I love these streams but you had Dana on and kept cutting him off, if your getting these experts then give them the airtime they deserve. please

Apologies - it is a tough balance to keep the pace moving on a one-hour live show (20-25 min for guest) and keep things interesting. It is a learning experience for sure to find that right balance. We appreciate the feedback and will try to do better next time.

@@terencefugazzi5164 I was thinking the same thing. I was really enjoying the points he was making and then he would get cut off. It's hard when the host is use to talking and not just listening and answering questions. On the other side, conversation can be more engaging then just listening to a single voice the whole time. I appreciate this content and interviews. Keep them coming and I will keep buying your products to support you! ;)

Why invite a guest on your show if you're just going to interrupt them constantly? I watched this to hear Dana Riddle, not Dana Riddle being interrupted and not being allowed to finish his thoughts. Effing rude
