This has been my gripe forever. Jay at prehistoric pets produces a large amount of retics every year and there aren’t enough experienced keepers or even enough cage space in the world for as many snakes as he produces. Also, in order to hit the crosses he is looking for there is a ton of byproduct as far as the animals go.
@Mockturtlesoup1
@Mockturtlesoup1 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've always felt the same way. I mean some of the animals he produces are freaking gorgeous(like those solid orange ones), but I too have always wondered/been concerned about where all of these snakes are going, and what kind of lives they end up having, as well as how he vets the people he sells them to(if at all.) That's one thing I respect about Brian Barczyk. He stopped breeding large snakes for this reason, and on the rare occasion he does breed one of his large snakes from the terrarium, he seriously vets the buyers to ensure they not only can take care of the snakes, but are experienced. In fact, I remember one time I commented on one of his videos that in some way had something to do with Jay and the retics he breeds, and expressed the same concerns I(and you) mentioned here and he responded, saying it is a concern of his as well, and(as I noted earlier) was the reason he stopped breeding large snakes. That being said, I do think the dwarves, and especially the super dwarves are the future of retics, and Garrett Hartle is doing some amazing things with them. I highly recommend following his channel if you don't already. In my opinion, super dwarf retics are like the perfect pet snake(at least for what I personally look for in a pet snake, especially one that's not just a display like some kind of tree boa/python or something.) The only problem is there are so few of them, they produce such small clutches, and you in order to get morphs onto them you have to outbreaks them to mainlands, which takes a long time to get them back down to a reasonable size(and worse still, the snakes tend to take on the size of their mothers, rather than the size of their fathers, so it's not like you can always just breed a super dwarf male to a mainland retic and a ton of eggs, because then the snakes will all be much bigger than if you breed a male mainland to a female dwarf/super dwarf. This also introduces the problem of size disparity, not just between mainlands and dwarves/super dwarves, but also of males and females.)

@@Mockturtlesoup1 you mean the guy that has a full sized green anaconda in a little 8x12~ or so fish pond? Yeah, perfect example of a good snake keeper. As long as it can move, shed, shit, and eat it is super duper healthy and happy! Just keep 20+ feet snakes healthy and happy in a 6x4!

@@waltersobchack8886 you don't think that $40,000 anaconda enclosure is adequate? What keepers do you know who keep anacondas in a better enclosure? Do you think Kevin is a good keeper? Because his anacondas(and retics) are in far, far smaller enclosures than Brian's, and don't have access to water(meaning to swim, or at least soak/submerge in.) I'm of course not saying Kevin is a bad keeper, but if Brian is, then Kevin is too(or maybe you do think the same of Kevin, I don't know.) As I said, I do think Brian's monitor lizard enclosures(except his croc monitor enclosure) are too small, and don't provide enough enrichment(through he also lets his monitors out to roam around a lot as well.)

I'd have to go to my home state if I was forced North - Washington State, but I already have a reptile rescue that's overflowing (thank you COVID - not), so getting an animal that required THAT much room & care would be irresponsible for me too. The majority of the snakes in the everglades are burms that were released from a research/breeding facility during hurricane Andrew - the guy left 1k-2k babies outside since he thought they couldn't live through it. Surprise... they can. Retics can't survive there, and the anacondas that are being found now were let go in response to the FWC ban on them. More reptiles are being released NOW, and on purpose (instead of accidental) due to that ban.

Hilariously, as someone who owns both snakes and horses, I have to point out that 400-500lbs is more like the size of a small pony. 1200 is closer to the usual size of a trail horse. I adopted two adult pet rats from a rescue last December that were completely unsocialized and obviously had been mistreated before coming to the rescue. It took over six months just to be able to touch them without freaking them out or getting bit. Now, 10 months in, I can pick one of them up. It's trust training all the time with them using the same methods. Brian Barczyk did a video with all of his monitors (two days ago?) and he was talking about "threads of trust" Not restraining the animal when handling and putting the animal back in its enclosure when it is calm. I think you explain your methods well and I am super happy that people have some great role models on KZbin when it comes to reptile husbandry.

I'm so incredibly sorry that you have to give up some of the animals you love so much. It's so difficult. I just ended a 14 yr relationship and 7 of those years were spent with an amazing dog. I had to leave him behind because my new place doesn't allow pets. I miss him so much. I'm sure you'll make sure your animals go to great homes 💜💔

I miss my snakes. I had five: Rocky (African Rock), Pinky (Ball python), Bananas (Pacific Gopher), Lucifer (Bull snake) and Skye (Common Garter). All of them were gorgeous, gentle creatures. Well, Lucifer was aggressive to everyone but me and my mom. Pinky loved to curl around your fingers and hand. Bananas always went straight to my neck, wrapping her bottom half around my neck and poked her head out of my sleeve, it was so damned adorable. Skye was a speed demon, she always moved around and quickly. Rocky was 12 ft long, so he didn't get taken out as often as the others, because he was also pretty heavy, but he was quite calm.

I just got out of hospital, my health is deteriorating and I'm in so much pain and incredibly ill at the moment. My mental health is also spiraling, I've been dealing with some awful trauma and recurring tragedies. I've been thinking about and considering just writing myself off, but I'm doing my best to fight it. I hope things begin looking up for you soon, you deserve it 🖤 Sending you all my love, Kitten 💔🐾

Yeah, I'm sure Lori would love that...lol. Personally, as much as I love retics, I do kind of agree with her that Brian has too many retics at the reptarium(though I do absolutely love some of them, such as night fury.) If he's going to get another large snake, I'd love to see him get something like an olive python(I know they are kind of drab, and can be quite defensive/nippy, but I've always thought they were really beautiful.) I'd also like to see some other monitor lizards, like maybe a roughneck. I REALLY want to see him get a perentie, or even a komodo dragon, though they are both super hard to come by, and the komodo in particular would need a massive enclosure, and I don't even know where that would go(maybe in the expansion?) Though I will say I've always felt like Brian's monitor lizard enclosures are too small, especially for such large, active animals. Actually, have you seen Kenan Harken's enclosure that he built for his water monitor slinky? I would absolutely kill to be able to have/afford something like that(though I also live in CT, so I can't exactly keep animals outside anyway.)
