Shadow Dragons ARE in the 5e MM, they're a template applied to the normal dragons, same with Dracolich.

The Template isnt the clearest thing in the world for many DM's though. You get the Young Red Shadow Dragon sure, but then many DM's are likely to not see it as a Template at first. Overall it could be clearer I guess it what im saying

I'm not sure how much clearer it could be. I can see how you could miss it by skimming, but if you stop to read it the description clearly says how to apply it and what it gets.

Man, I’ve homebrewed some crazy history to my home made world involving an ancient shadow dragon. The shadow dragon is like the end all and enemy to all in it. I just wish they did more with different types of shadow dragons.. maybe a magically tainted lightning breath that animates the dead? Or for green dragons poison breath to exhume a shadowy noxious mist that eats at you and with some form of crowd control effect to it? I may be a bit of a shadow dragon fan..

The dire animals are in 5th edition. They’re just called “giant” instead. There’s even an increased size version for a few of them, like I’m pretty sure there’s a hulking crab in one of the adventures (Tales from the Yawning Portal, I think). As for the Dire Bear, if they were going to do that I would want them to just make stats for a few of the extinct species of bear that are bigger than the Polar Bear, like the Short-Faced Bear and I think there was one even bigger than that.

Yeah, thought it was weird when I first realized Wolf didn't have a Giant variant. Druids that focus on Conjuration or Wild Shape seem to do okay, since most encounters favor their low level power scaling.

On DMsGuild, Conner McCall went and basically adapted the Draconomicon to 5th edition. It's called The Book Of Dragons for 5th Edition. I bought it a while ago and it's well worth the price if you like dragons and want to make better use of them, and it also has 5e stats for drakes and most everything else the Draconomicon had. Actually, there's so much Dragon stuff from previous editions, he had to make two books (most of the planar dragons are in the second one). Ted, you should totally review them for this channel, if you haven't already.

You read my mind from back in January!!! I was telling the friend that got me back into D&D that they really are screwing up by not having a book solely on dragons. I figured that dragon lore had evolved and included so many different types. I was wrong. We were working a job away from home in Indiana and he went to a used book store. He found and bought me the Dragonomicon from 3.5e. I love that book and use it to flesh out dragons for battles with my two son's party. I don't pull stats but will be home brew converting many things from that book. Sounds like a busy weekend with a new set of ink cartridges, the PC and a stack of the finest printing paper so I can make my own 5e version of that book. I really feel like the ball is being dropped by some pure laziness as far as monster books not being released. The monsters we kill if played or used properly is where the magic of the game comes from. I'm really shocked by the lack of a visual description of the creatures in many of the monster's stat page.

Drakes basically replaced the big cats in my home brew campaign because we had Tabaxi and another home brew race that was more Lion based. Dragon Magazine had an article with my favorite dragon that brewed moonshine as it's breath weapon. They spit the alcohol at you and you might go blind with a very low save, but you probably were vulnerable to fire for a few rounds after you got sprayed. Half lungs rode them in my world and tossed torches at people they were fighting.

I've added in soulberg to my first time dming, albeit with alot of creative freedom to warp it into a more DND -esque style. the player who found it became so attached to it that he made me put it in every campaign I ran, though I change some of its properties each time, and there's an unspoken rule in my party that when it's found, it's his. in every form, I give it a protective option, ( such as turning skin to steel, like it does to it's victims) and a offensive option. it's unanimously decided by my party to be the best homebrew I've made

Totally agree with you regarding the need for more dragon and drake variants. Drakes are particularly important because they can give the PCs the feel of fighting dragons when they're too low-level to face-off against the real thing. I've been home-brewing a load of drake species to enable this. New flavours of dragon-born linked to these might also be an idea. I think dire wolves stuck around because a) they've been in the game since the beginning and b) are based on an actual creature, rather than just because of GoT. I'm not normally a fan of other dire-critters, but did have a lot of fun unleashing a horde of dire penguins in a comedy-horror game. The Yrthak is one I'd like to see again. They're a comparatively low level huge flyer, so useful for dramatic outdoor encounters before the players are tough enough for adult dragons and their ilk, and their appearance and power-set makes them simultaneously creepy and hilarious. I really want to see a return of two obscure second-ed creatures: Fire Weed and Vampire Squids. (both were in Dragon at one stage, not sure if they ever appeared in an actual book) Fire weed was an underground plant that absorbed heat and chemical energy rather than sunlight. Not actually hostile but could give someone frostbite. Technically edible. I liked it just because it made the underdark ecosystem make more sense. Vampire Squids (I renamed them tunnel squids when I last used them due to there being an actual creature called vampire squids that the writers didn't know of) were aquatic beasts-of-burden bred by the mind-flayers to pull boats along underground rivers. Had a fun encounter using them to pull water-chariots for an underground speedboat chase.

I've found that it's pretty easy to turn the base creatures in the Monster Manual into Dire creatures. The Dire Wolf just has +3 Con and Str over a regular wolf, along with a slightly higer AC and HP. If you wanted to apply that +3 to other stats to emphasize a swifter Dire animal, or maybe even a more intelligent Dire animal, just move the bonuses around. Then make the creature one size bigger, give it about 10 to 20 extra feet of movement, along with multiattack, and your group will be fearing Dire Deer for quite some time.

Having only played 5e i have to say i do love all the little flavor things 3.5e has. Like, something as simple as what environment a monster inhabits can often be inferred in 5e but i like that it's just outright stated here. Way more evocative and helpful when designing your own encounters. That said, the formatting is absolutely atrocious. All that info results in a garbled mess of a stat-block that's almost intelligible at a glance. I've gained a new appreciation for 5e's readability.

I think the problem dragons have at the moment in 5E is that they are not unique enough. You look at demons and devils and many of them offer vastly different abilities. But dragons are basically this: You have a claw attack, a bite attack, and maybe a tail attack. You get 80 feet flying speed. You get a breath weapon (of different types) that recharges. That's it. Yes there are dracoliches and shadow dragons, but the type really needs more variety. Even many of the dragons in the kobold press monster books don't deviate much from this.

I feel like to get the gem dragons to stand out they really need the magic vs psionics component, and since they took arcane magic away from the chromatic and metallic dragons they can't really give psionics to the gem dragons. As a result they'd just be a batch of neutral dragons that otherwise end up exactly like the existing dragons. I could homebrew one in 5 minutes, but they aren't really that interesting. It's honestly not a huge surprise that we don't see them do more with dragons, they made them so generic in 5e that it's hard to do anything particularly interesting with them. They can make for a challenging encounter if used correctly, but don't have much depth beyond that.

Chill touch could make it week though. Audrey 2: You can have other deadly plants. Gimpy gimpy, Dynamite tree etc. The deathfog though is fun. Its a plant right? Can its seeds be part of a plantgrowth spell? Snowflake ooze ... funky. Yes for drakes. Or some new wyvern version. Siege crab - Aquaman did it and the things were darn awesome. Dragons - yes please, update them. A book/erata with templates would be neat. Like elementals, vampire, giant, People ("furry") etc.

If they did a Draconomicon that included character options as well as all the dragons it would be great. I could easily see a draconic subclass for barbarian, cleric, monk, paladin, ranger, and warlock.

Dire bear. I've been playing a mountain giant (Fir'bolg) natural direbear lycanthrope for nearly my entire player career. I love dire animals. Even if Dire was a template like Feral or GodBlooded. I use them as shriekers as well. ;)

Etherial Mauraders. Fun times. I had them scan from the etherial and lash out from the beyond (so to speak) on adventuring parties until they damage them. Then I would have them soul scan (like heat from shriekers) so they can see the players. Fun times.

An ethereal marauder is just a phase spider without the poison. Although the 3.5 phase spider was better than the 5e one because it could appear, attack and vanish in 1 round. Both suck compared to the ethereal filcher who would steal the party's magical loot and then walk through a wall. Dire wolfs are the only dire animals in 5e because dire wolfs were the only dire animals on Earth. Dire wolfs used to exist, dire weasels never did.

how would you go about introducing a lot of dragons in the game though? don't get me wrong, i love dragons, and every dragon so far has had something unique about them. the gold dracolich, the green dragon party patron, the black overly acidic bastard in his monestray that drives the monks crazy in their stone sleep, the pirate white dragon with a breath that creates ice elementals, the copper dragon that decides to be a passenger on a ship for a day. but this has been all the dragons that exist in the world at present in a game that has been going for 16 months now.

*IF* WotC gives us a dragon resource book, they *need* to update/change Dragonborn to actually make sense! If you choose to be a dragonborn, you're already starting off the game MAD, and you don't get much chance to use your signature racial feature because *you only have 1 use of your breath weapon,* at least RAW. If I can get a DM to agree with your Fixing Dragonborn video, awesome, but I think it would be a little easier to just have an official repair of the race

Keep the left wing politics out. As someone who wants to get into D&D I find that leftists destroy anything they touch. Leftists complaining about things they don't understand and attacking fans and people who have a different opinion than they do. The SJW infestation of entertainment is worse than the 80s Satanic panic. In fact it's history repeating itself thanks to SJWs. Most people just want entertainment not politics of any kind.

@@zacharygadzinski3147 Keep your rightwing politics out. As someone ALREADY into D&D I find righties destroy everything they touch. Rightwingers complaining about other people's comments they don't understand and attack people with different opinions than they have. The Satanic Panic WAS LITERALLY rightwing in nature, thanks to religious extremists. SJW is a bullshit term used by morons to shut down arguments they have neither the will nor intellectual capacity to engage with. I hope you see how easy your arguments were to mock and dismiss, and that you try harder next time.

@@dannya.2616 You truly don't realize how corrupt Leftists are. The left has destroyed a lot of our culture and entertainment. And you attempting to insult me has no effect since it can mirrored back at. Also, most of the people responsible for the Satanic panic were older. Younger Republicans know better. However, Democrats are totalitarian bigots. They say they're inclusive but the opposite is true. As soon as someone they claim to care about has a different opinion they get hysterical. By the end of the day leftists just see you as a walking moneybags. All they care about is power and control.
