When The Hangover first hit theaters, it took the world by storm. Coming out at the peak of the raunchy comedy era, The Hangover was beloved by everyone. It was so successful that the studio immediately green lit sequels. Though that's exactly where The Hangover series started it's dramatic downfall.

I recall hearing almost the exact same thing from the Trailer park boys. It was actually a bit of a wake up call for me at the time lol Ne and my friends had gotten obnoxiously carried away with quoting it EVERYWHERE and I thought to myself "if I'm ACTING like trailer trash, and that's all someone else sees..... then as far as they're concerned I AM trailer trash...... and my opinion won't matter if general consensus is the same...." I'm just glad we were mainly just quoting it and smoking stupid amounts of weed, and none of us really fucjed up during that time-frame lol "We were just joking" the man says "Sure you were buddy![pats on shoulder]" And just like that, it doesn't even matter. The downfall was inevitable because the whole premise was a one-time event. It was a crazy, once-in-a-lifetime sort of thing so zany that if you try to do it again, it is just ridiculous and loses any sense of novelty. And that novelty is why it works the one time. It is funny and entertaining and enthralling because it is so over the top. If you do it multiple times, it just because part of the normal universe.

You can apply the same logic to sooo many other things that should've just been one and done. People want more of that feeling but always fail to realize that it was so good because you don't see it all the time. People start treating that good hit of serotonin they got like a drug and want more and more movies to try and get that good hit like the first time but you can never go back BECAUSE it was the first time you saw something like that. I feel like that's how everything ultimately runs out of steam and why you need a good project lead to know when to pull the plug fully. Star Wars should've been like that, The Office too, same with any revival/remake Hollywood tries to push out.
@thedefinitionisthis
@thedefinitionisthis 11 ай бұрын
@@ContinuumSpanner You're not necessarily wrong in that people want more of that particular feeling, but something like Star Wars lends itself to further stories down the road (and stories that take place in the past). Something like "The Hangover", however really was based around a SINGLE one-time event that had no real back-story, nor does it really set up future events. That being said, I actually applaud Hangover 3 for feeling like a true continuation, in that that Wolfpack actually had to deal with the ramifications of their actions in the first movie, whereas the second movie was literally just cut and paste their situation in another environment where EVERYTHING is now telegraphed because of what we know from the first one.

Especially with how crude and Grungy it was compared to the first movie despite the rehash of jokes. I feel in the 3rd movie was the one where Alan was completely brain dead and the jokes weren’t hitting at all. At that point I thought bringing it back to Vegas wasn’t it, neither was the story. I never got the impression that the franchise came to an 'Inevitable Downfall'. I thought that the writing seemed consistent across the board having each of the members of the wolf pack get married except for Phil because he was already married. I think that the series had an expiration date having 4 lead characters, but I wouldn't say they 'ran out of ideas'. We all knew exactly what we were in for when we saw the sequels right? At best it would be a rehash of the same old comedy set to the marriages of the remaining members of the wolf pack. I don't think there would have been a part 4 realistically speaking. I think they did well with what they had under the parameters they set with the first movie.

I don't know if even the original totally holds up today, but it is one of those films where you had to be there when it was released to really connect with it. It seemed to come out at a time when people really wanted just a fun comedy movie and to forget reality for 1.5 hours. Plus the 3 or 4 leads somehow went together perfectly. Personally I love the whole trilogy. The first one is the classic where it all started. I used to hate the second cause it felt like a lazy rehash Of the first but after a few rewatches I've grown to appreciate where it ups the ante in some spots and improves on the first one. The third one has a notably different feel. It almost feels like an over the top action movie in some spots more than the first two but I love it for that and it ties up the trilogy really well. Plus it was the first one I watched so it's always special to me. I get that some people might think the two sequels are unnecessary and technically they are but not unappreciated. Each one explores avenues I didn't necessarily ask for but I'm happy they're there and by the end of the trilogy there are a few good throughlines in the series that make it all feel holistic. I think a fourth mightve have pushed it after the way three ended so I think they called it quits without overstaying their welcome and tainting the series

I remember watching this movie in theaters with my dad, throughout the whole film everybody in theater was audibly dying of laughter. You couldn't walk more then 4 blocks on south beach without seeing the "Baby Glasses" merch! Talking about the movie when it released felt like a really nice time to be alive. Now I feel like people don't bond over comedy like this anymore, only over which superhero had the better movie.

Yeah, people are being guided to not enjoy carefree, large social activities like that anymore.. Those are the things that you will never forget, and that sparked happiness in your soul, because we are social creatures.. Now people are being taught to put on a mask and avoid interactions like that.. it’s really sad. But great that you have that positive memory.. I have many myself like that.. Hopefully things will go back towards that carefree, enjoyable way of living..

Good take, however i would also add the sequal movies took place in more exotic locations the core audience of westerners could not relate to as much. Beeing that I have been to Thailand and Mexico I would say the movies do a fantastic job showing fish out water comedy tropes that worked well for those locations.

@@radhiadeedou8286 are you disagreeing with me and telling me what my opinion is? I simply agreed with the videos take and added that they are good fish out of water movies for non well traveled Americans to watch. So yes the series did decline in quality but from a non well traveled American Point Of View they could be a deascent representation of FOOW comedy. I did not say or insinuate anything about non Americans POV viewing movies made/set in America.

The original Hangover it's still very funny to me, the sequels are kind of a guilty pleasure, and it's one of the few live-action movies where I prefer watching the dubbed version, since there're 2 Latin American Spanish dubs, a "Neutral" version and one filled with Mexican slang words and they're so funny and quotable, and all the voice actors did a great job

I also think part of the problem Hollywood doesn't get about fast tracking these comedy sequels is that it was a product someone cared about doing a good job with in the first one. The other 2 feel definitely more produced for a quick turnaround and kinda lose their comedic voice and identity with it

By 2009, zany, raunch-filled R rated comedy films were thriving like nobody’s business. That summer, the family and I went about on a evening trip to a drive in theater to see the spectacle that was “The Hangover”, perhaps the most talked about comedy film of the times. I had to been about 8, and had no idea for the kind of ride I was in for. There was a lot of eye closing (nudity), “oohs” and “aahs” and a shit ton of laughter-induced tears. An experience of a lifetime

The Hangover Part 3 is a movie I haven't seen in YEARS but there's one thing you need to understand: That's not Tijuana. The place is actually Nogales Arizona/Sonora. It's still special because it's both a blessing and a curse because Nogales gets reconized by us and the people near the area but the downside is that Nogales will only be known about that. Take it from me, that's all my hometown will EVER be known for.

What happened? It was based on one plotline if getting so "drunk", actually drugged, that they couldn't remember what happened. How many times can you do that? How far can you pivot from that? Hangover 2 was essentially hangover in a different setting. When they tried to expand the story In 3 it wasn't as successful. It's one good comedy that should have stayed that.

What had happened was, the 1st movie had taken time to finally come together, then the studio rushed a 2nd movie which wasn't in the works and with no ideas, they just did a copy of the 1st in another city. When people bitched about that they went in a total different direction which sucked until the very end, which was the funniest part of rhe movie. They should have kept the whodunit aspect but changed the aspect of what was done. And also be funny.

One of the worst things about Hangover 3 is the Flanderization of Alan. He went from being a lovable weirdo to being unlikable piece of shit. He was selfish, narcissistic, and dangerous as he had no concern or consideration for his friends and family for his actions. The worst part is is that the movie rewarded him. Other than an half assed intervention, he got away with everything and was given no punishment whatsoever. They even gave him a wife in the form of another unlikable character played by Melissa McCarthy who was starting to wear out her appeal. I was expecting Phil to lose his shit and scream at Alan like in the first two movies but no, he just stood there as Alan acted like an asshole. It was so infuriating.

It seems like these days there are no great comedy films in theaters anymore. Best "modern era" comedies have been on HBO (Silicon Valley, Eastbound & Down, Vice Principles and The Righteous Gemstons). We need the old school comedy back to theaters. Films like Animal House, Vacation, Old School, Porky's can't be appreciated enough.
