God Max is an incredible villain. Setting him up as a literal monster, then showing us a glimmer of the depth beneath his facade, then ripping it away from us so suddenly we still feel a little sorry for him in moments like this. He is more of a monster than ever and that's tragic. I love it.

I still headcanon that the real reason Max was so hellbent on killing was because no one worried about his absence or mourned his death. They only cared when it cost them the game against Clivesdale (fuck Clivesdale). Everyone celebrated and even dreaded the possibility of his return. Not to say he was in any way a good person but almost everyone wants to be missed when they’re gone. It’s even hinted that his homelife might have been somewhat abusive from the negative self-talk he had during the scene at the Waylon place. We get no indication that even his parents cared.

I agree. He was a tormented youth with an aggressively uncaring and abusive family. He needed therapy, medication, and better parents, not a horrifying death and tortured afterlife. It got to me, seeing how one act of "kindness" from the nerds shook him so hard right before he died, but he had never had a single nice thing done for him in his entire life. Even his parents didn't care.

Nah, he straight up said it's not revenge. He tortured Richie, delighted in his pain, even though Richie was the least involved in his death. But he was the nerd that was accepted by the team. He was a sign that the artificial hierarchy he'd imposed had faded.

Richie was accepted by Max's former friends. He was no longer a loser in their eyes. That was the final nail in the coffin and what forced him to take action. ( _But he was certainly influenced by the Lords of Black._ )

Everything from the expressions to the dynamic camera characters mannerisms to the smooth transitions between each shot are absolutely amazing. But my favorite little detail has to be all the ghostly hands on Richie's back when he says he yells he isn't a loser. Because thanks to them he really does believe that. I absolutely love how can understand it's Grace's, Ruth's and Pete's hands almost as if to back him up and Steph's hand joins in late but is on Pete's hand foreshadowing their future together.

Honestly this might be my favourite animation using this segment. Every animation/animatic I’ve seen has Max smiling and obviously enjoying the moment. It’s just another tormenting taunt and play for control. But with a few changes in lighting and expressions it feels different. Instead of being the controlling taunts of a bully it’s a legit question of insecurity from a boy who spent his entire life tormenting and bullying those lesser than him. He wasn’t even important enough to mourn or be concerned over. His own friends forgot about him in a span of two weeks and instead started getting pally with one of the people he thinks is responsible for his death. Who would, who will pray for the damned soul of the insufferable and toxic jock who spent his days making everyone else’s miserable? Was what he did, what he strived for worth it or did he waste his life for nothing. Does he even matter? He’s not joking not taunting… he’s asking a question about himself and is simply using Richie as a scapegoat to air out his feelings. The line “until another Richie comes along” is interesting in this context too. It could be a double meaning. The only reason he came back and the only reason his first mark was Richie was because Richie was the peak of the downgrade of the school for Max. Jocks and Nerds mingling. Max’s own friends apologising and saying they *need* Richie on the team and meaning every word. It had to stop and the only way he felt like he could send a message was to do what he did to Richie first. “Will people only care when I take the life of another nerdy prude like Richie? Or will I be replaced by another like him? Is my legacy going to have its place stolen by the very people I despise?” Max isn’t a good person… that much is clear. But it’s also clear that he’s a very insecure person. He’s a high school Jock who degrades others to make himself feel big. Classic bully. He’s now a ghost who has been dead for two weeks without anyone even mentioning him. It’s kind of sad. He projects this onto Richie. Getting angrier and angrier as it progresses. Changing the question to who will pray and remember you? The context of the song is changed completely on Max’s side if you just… change the expression and way he moves. Even “the eternal dark without a dawn” line. Strangely profound for someone who’s shown to be an idiot. Anyway I think you add a lot more nuance to Max’s character by making him legitimately upset with his situation. A taunt and projection hiding legit insecurity and sadness in his own demise and use of a life but never even having the chance to mature and know any other life and method besides what he’s been doing his entire life. It’s sad, poetic and fits the character so well.

the hands on Richie's back are all of his friends, in order of how much they meant to him. starting with Ruth's hand who he was the closest to, then Pete's hand, his other best friend. The Grace who he wasn't exactly friends with but she's a nerd so they were allies. and then Steph's, who he would have gotten to know better if he hadn't died. it's so sad but also really clever and beautiful. best animation I've seen so far.

This part of the song honestly makes me wish I lived in a different, less ironic timeline. I have read from a comment or two that this was going to be a stand-alone song somewhere, but was cut for being "trite." I can guess why, but having listened to a few of the songs from the musical, this is by far the best, most IMPACTFUL part of the whole thing. The rest of it has this kinda nudge nudge wink wink feel to it. I mean, it's "Horror comedy" so naturally it's supposed to not be totally serious, but... that's what bugs me. SO many things today slap comedy on that it's becoming the "RPG" of films/TV, the same way every game includes "RPG elements" now like skills and levels, people write comedy into their shows for different reasons, but it ultimately feels like a lot of these ideas get watered down. A musical that could have shown a serious flip-side take on the usual "Dumb jocks get everyone in trouble with serial killer/monster by doing reckless things" by having the sexless nerds accidentally make their bully into a RIGHTLY vengeful spirit, a show where we could have rooted for the abused jock monster, devolves into death by wedgie and silly named monsters from an alternate dimension. Some ideas deserve better.

Richie’s death was probably the most tragic. He was the first to die and was just kind of along for the ride. The “I’m not a loser” always gets to me because it kind of shows he started to have hope for his future and not be a “loser nerd” and believes he didn’t deserve to die. Man.

You can also count the seconds a given part of the song lasts and calculate how many frames you need. IDK, it's a process.
