Homelander is a villain because he had nothing and was horribly abused throughout his childhood. The Deep is a villain because everything was handed to him and he never faced real challenges.

Litteraly not true, he was seen as a joke by everyone and no one respected him, everyone made offensive jokes to him and didn't care about anything he had to say about the ocean creatures, who were the only things that he really had a conection with because that's his only superpower, he has to live his life acting like he doesn't care about people killing and eating the creatures that are really his only friends because no one can understand how precious they are like he does, and he is forced to encourage people to eat sea animals and to support sea animals abuse because the sea is the only thing that is special about him, he is a piece of shit, obviously, but i get why he is a piece of shit, like, who wouldn't be with a life like that.

I think two things about Deep that are important to remember are 1. just how dumb he is, and I guess by dumb I mean he lacks any understanding of the consequences of his actions, he doesn’t have the maturity to realize that he IS extremely powerful and he DOES hurt and kill people. I think in that respect he is similar, strangle enough, to Aegon II from House of the Dragon, who also is so privileged yet incompetent and overlooked that he does some really similar despicable things without even being aware of just how bad they are. 2. Both Deep and A-Train have had similar places in the story but with wildly different trajectories. They started out in basically the same place, troubled but looked on favorably, they both got in a lot of trouble and both were distanced and removed from The Seven, where they differ is that A-Train actively fought redemption until it crushed him, leaving doing the right thing to often be his only option. Deep on the other hand, immediately tried the most fake and scripted redemption arc just so he could get back in bed with those in power, it was so pathetic that it worked and as you stated, as soon as it did he showed he never actually cared about being better. I think the juxtaposition of both of these two characters is just about the most interesting part of this show.

at the end of season 2 it honestly seemed more like deep was on some path to some sort of redemption and a-train was gonna stay a cunt who didn't care about the people he hurt while the deep seemed somewhat apologetic and had even helped the protagonists at one point. but then in season 3 the writers switched to a-train for redemption and wasted deep on pathetic comic relief and octopus sex

That phrasing tells us that he doesn't care that Starlight was violated, only that he was caught. Like many monsters in real life, he doesn't view people as human beings with agency and emotions but as stepping stones in his path to success.

To prove he hasn't learned anything...in Season 2, when he encountered Starlight he actually owned up to his actions and apologised, but in Season 4...he literally goes back to the way he was and blames her cancelling him as he claimed to be an innocent guy. Like seriously, you can't make this up 😂. The Deep will never get a redemption arc XD. He kisses Homelander's ass so much that he is willing to kill people for him, eat his sea creature friends, and run errands for him. It only gets deeper for The Deep 😭.
