Just to point out, you need to push the air bubbles out only if you are injecting directly into a vein. With what Ellie was doing it isn't a big danger.

I hopped into chat at this point just to make this point. For intramuscular or subcutaneous injections, it really doesn't matter, and doing the tap-tap-press to remove air just wastes medicine.

Still can hit a blood vessel, with intramuscular injections. Obviously aspirate it. Anyway I was shocked stuck it right in Joel's liver wtf. Surprised Hollywood even put a deep wound there, definitely be dead of toxicity in the blood stream or hypovolemia.
@stephmgreen
@stephmgreen Жыл бұрын
@@drach420 out of curiosity, do you work in medicine? because it was my understanding that this isn't supposed to be a subcutaneous injection. it's just sort of a "movie medicine" kind of moment. it's actually supposed to be infused over a period of 20-30 minutes intravenously. I came back to say from everything I've found, it can be given subcutaneously, but not at high doses and to me--that looked like a high dose as she didn't appear to be mixing it.
@drach420
@drach420 Жыл бұрын
@@stephmgreen I do not work in medicine. I'm repeating something my instructor said during my wilderness first responder training, when we were learning to load and administer syringes intramuscularly and subcutaneously. He was a PA at the time in addition to being a wilderness EMT. He stressed that the dangers of air bubbles are over-dramatized in film and tv, and moreover they really only matter if injected directly into the bloodstream. He said that if you're administering a subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, as long as you're not actively trying to fill it up with air, you're probably good without needung to stress about tiny bubbles. As always, don't take medical advice or training from a KZbin comment yada yada. Re: the injection itself in the show -- yeah, she was basically injecting it directly into his abdomen, which would not be appropriate. You'd probably stick that in the muscle in the fleshy part of the butt or the hip. They accurately depicted an untrained teenager having no idea what she's doing.
@stephmgreen
@stephmgreen Жыл бұрын
@@drach420 lol, I know. I have basic medical training/knowledge but I know I to not to take advice from KZbin. I was just curious as you were commenting with utter confidence. This is true-but the air in those syringes can be marginally uncomfortable for the injectee. Not that it’s a major concern, but if you have the time, it’s best practice to keep them air-free. Especially because it just creates a good habit-but that’s more so for people working with intravenous injections/infusions as well. But everything you were taught was accurate. As far as intravenous injections go, it is dangerous, but it’s a matter of volume AND the rate of injection. It likely wouldn’t cause an air embolism if she had pushed it through an IV either just by what I could glean from the syringe they showed. That being said, obviously don’t take my advice either lol. This is still KZbin.

Nerdy should rewatch the episode. The cannibalism was referred to from the get-go. Why was the girl crying and wanting her father buried in an early scene? Why did the cook ask what the meat was? (The stag hadn't been dressed yet.) Etc.
@Nomadic813
@Nomadic813 Жыл бұрын
There was lots of foreshadowing and framing to make the audience uneasy and allowed for the possibility of cannibalism, but according to David, only him and a couple others even knew they were eating humans. While it's possible he was lying, it doesn't seem to fit his MO to lie about that. He was trying to convince Ellie to join him and that she was special to him. That he would have told her what was going on even though he didn't tell the others. The statements of the girl asking about her father and the cook asking for the origins of a meat are normal enough without them thinking about cannibalism. Especially the cook, why would she ask at all if she knew already. And in a earlier scene when James and David are accounting for supplies they specifically talk about deer and rabbits when they are talking about food stocks. Not much need to lie about it if everyone knows, although it could just be a euphemism for vanity. And at the same time the congregation in David's town... Being so low and vacant... That could be the demoralization if knowing they are cannibals... Or just resignation and desperation. I don't think we're given enough info honestly to definitely say if everyone knew or not.

Great commentary as always! But I was bummed you didn't show your reaction to the big payoff -- the hug, and Joel saying, "Baby girl, I've got you. I've got you." Aghghhg. (sniffle) Terrific episode, and Bella and Pedro were incredible. I would also note that the reason the townspeople don't come running is (1) the kitchen/dining complex is a separate building and they had all just had mealtime fairly recently; (2) the henchmen were all off searching for Joel; and (3) the fire had been started for about 3-5 minutes tops, so it's understandable that people off in their own separate buildings might not realize it right away. I agree that I don't mind the lack of Infected -- the show is about more than that, and it's trying to be more than a play-by-play of the game. Great commentary as always!

Cannibalism was eluded to in the kitchen scene when Hanna's mother asked what sort of meat it was. Josiah hesitated before saying it was venison. That hesitation is what gave it away. So, in a way, cannibalism made an earlier "entry" than you thought! I am not 100% sure of this, but I think that while the show is going through the winter months, the infected are being left out as the fungus doesn't do well in the cold. Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin seem to have updated the science of how cordyceps works to keep the show a little more real and believable.

My take on the episode is that this show has an ongoing theme on the human social need to belong to a greater group, and how far they will rationalize things and go in order to "belong" and let external sources become their moral compass instead of their own self. Earlier it was Fedra, and trusting the "government" to decide what's right. Then Kathleen's "resistance" and the Fireflies, and trusting radical groups with one extreme agenda to dictate what's right. Then there's Jackson and the community, and thinking that "same" means "equal", when equality without equity isn't true equality at all. Jackson sounds nice and all, but the body's left around show it's not the best. And now here's religion and once again blind faith. And every single time, people following Fedra with, "wherever you go, we're behind you", with Kathleen, with the fireflies, with Jackson, and now with the preacher. No accountability. Politicians, leaders, friends, it's like as soon as they're part of your social bubble they can do no wrong, and the person will follow them no matter what. The only people in this show that end up doing well, or living longer and better are people like Bill, Frank, and the elderly couple an episode ago. Even between Bill and Frank, Bill was like, "Ok, help me understand why you need the paint". Even there he was like, "I need to understand so that I can agree with you". Basically if you think for yourself and make your own decisions instead of just "following" you have better odds of living better. Human instinct is that it's safer in groups, which is often true for survival. But when you mistake the feeling of belonging for justice, morality, or anything other than what it is, it all goes downhill from there.

6:10 really good reaction so far! Just to specify, an air bubble wont be harmful if you are just injecting something through the skin or into a muscle. It is mostly dangerous for people who routinely inject themselves for one reason or another as it can build up in your body if it isn't filtered by your lungs fast enough. So basically you CAN get a lethal dose of air but its like 100ml of air at once, not a stray micro bubble. And yes blood absolutely carries oxygen. But it carries it in the hemoglobin, not just in the bloodvessel/vein.

Typically medication that needs to administered via syringe will have the route of administration labeled on the vial itself, so it would have been Ellie's best bet to had read the bottle for instructions; also I believe the penicillin she had would have likely been administered intravascularly (i.e. the vein) and not in the stomach which would be delivered in the subcutaneous tissue where meds like insulin typically go.

In the wrap-up you mention how late it is before they introduce the townspeople's diet--they actually hint at it much earlier. After that first sermon, the preacher's assistant tells him that they're out of venison, and then before he comes back from meeting Ellie you get a scene in the kitchen when they say "What kind of meat is that?" "Venison." Then you get that meal where everyone is quiet and somber (where he smacks the girl for back-talk)... so I interpreted that as everyone kind of knowing on some level what they've been eating but not wanting to acknowledge it, and assumed that's why nobody came to help when the kitchen was burning down.

Another low point for Ellie and a turning point for her. Here the animal in Ellie came out with her overkill and the experience she had to make. Almost r*p*d and eaten. Here she experiences for the first time the worst abysses in man. I think if you've seen Ellie's past reactions to losses, there wasn't much anger involved. She swallowed Sam's death completely. Here in her outburst really everything came out, which was not seen before. There is no way back for her. She will not be the same anymore. The episode is also important for the future. It shows what Ellie is capable of. A dark side in her that people like David recognize. I also think it's cool that the torture scene actually showed us explicitly how Joel has proceeded over the last 20 years. This was the first time it was really shown why everyone was afraid of Joel in episode 1. A nice Tess callback from Ellie in the conversation with David. "Your (our) luck had to run out sooner or later." were Tess's words shortly before she had shown him her bite. The father of the girl Joel killed will always be with her. I'm sure she enjoyed the meal. That's macabre. 😁 And here is Troy Baker (Game Joel) in a not so small role as David's henchman James. You can even hear Joel out of his voice from time to time. I also didn't think that one day I would have to see Ellie kill Joel. The reason why no one notices the burning house is probably because the weather outside just sucks and everyone is in their houses. "When you are lost in the darkness, look for the light" Joel who lives in the (his) darkness has found the light in Ellie. At the same time, she loses hers through him and the world he shows her. There will be another big timejump. At the beginning of the next episode they will already be in Salt Lake City. Also, we'll see Ashley Johnson, who was Ellie in the game.

I mean, in regard to there not being infected in this episode, I would imagine any infected outside in the weather portrayed would be completely frozen and harmless, if not straight up dead. That leaves only the infected inside buildings that are still in good enough condition to stay warm enough to survive in, which after 20 years of sitting at ambient temperatures would probably be very far and few between. Finally, the town itself where the cannibals reside was likely cleared of infected ages ago. So I'm not surprised that we don't see any "zombies"

Your assessment about injections is apt, for injections given into a blood vessel. Unlike most medications, penicillen is administered into tissue, not dorectly to the blood stream, which is why 1. An air bubble woukd be minimal concern, and 2. Why Ellie administering it directly into the wounded area actually can work. "Theres a secret door!? They found the best house! Ellie pushed a piece of furniture in front of the door to the basement to hide it. That is *not* a "secret door" Calling that a secret door is akin to calling the spare tire compartment in a car "a secret compartment" but worse, because at least the compartment in the car may have been intended to be "out of the way" with a panel laid over it.

This is a subcutaneous injection. You put the syringe into the bottle upright, push the plunger fully down, the turn the bottle/syringe upside down and draw. There are no air bubbles and it's not going into a vein regardless, so Ellie was doing fine.

the thing about people around you could say that they don't live nearby because you can see that they are about to chop people and there are bodies in the house nearby. David said that a few people know about this [most of them probably died already only James with him prepare to chop Eillie] so David would not allow anybody except people that knew living near the place so they just come to eat meal and leave and the fight scene happened within like 5 - 10 mins nobody will notice the fire that fast because it's cold and people live in the house. People probably come after Joe and Eillie left

hey, just a heads up, yes, you do need to get the air out, but the amount of air needed to do that is larger than you think. it's a matter of the rate and volume. not either or. Also this is stritcly for intravenous injections, not subcu--which is what ellie was doing. She was pushing into fatty tissue. For example, let's say a nurse forgets to "prime" a line of tubing...meaning they forget to run the fluid through the line first before attaching it--yes that's dangerous but it's not always 100% lethal. I actually accidentally did that to myself and was largely convinced I was going to die--I, thankfully, did not. I felt dizzy but caught it about halfway through the line and thankfully never made that error again. If you've ever seen those episodes of law & order, they make it seem a lot more simplistic than it is to cause an air embolism.

Infected can't survive in the cold weather well. Also, they are in a very remote area where there aren't a lot of people to turn into the infected. So it would be silly to have a horde of infected. Also, adding infected just to have infected will do it a disservice.
@therren9981
@therren9981 Жыл бұрын
So regarding the amount of infected, I have a theory about that which may help explain why there hasn't been a single infected in the winter sections of the show. Please note I have not listened to interviews/the show podcast, so I may be saying something that is already debunked by the creators, cast, etc. The very first scene of the show talks about how fungi could pose a threat if they adapt to a warmer climate, but doesn't say anything about adapting to colder climates. They changed plot holes in the game so that the infection makes more sense on a scientific level where spores became mycelium to prevent the game mechanics from taking over the world mechanics. Mycelium can become frozen, unable to move, during the harsh winters, then reawaken in spring when it gets warmer out. I wonder if that is the reasoning behind why there is no infected anywhere in the present timeline after episode 5. It makes sense, the infected aren't able to understand fire (line from Joel in episode 4 about building a fire being bad because of the people not the infected) and heat, so would not be able to force the people they're controlling into finding or making heat sources. I think that the infected are either frozen outside or trapped into shelter if they were more smart than I give them credit for. The downside to this theory is that we don't get the infected in winter, and we don't get the horde as Abby from Part II.

"The ground is too hard to dig. We'll bury him in the spring." or something like that was said at the beginning. It Hints at the cannibalism. So does the dead dude's wife/girls mother who was the one putting the meat in the pot. She asks what kind of meat she was handed and was told" venison", which obviously it wasn't. It was her dead husband (possibly). And it's funny that she was told venison since the deer wasn't brought in till afterwards and they said they haven't seen deer in a while. I think game Joel was trying to protect Ellie when he says to just let her go and that her dying out there was God's will. I think Troy Baker requested to be killed by Ellie as well. I liked how they showed the famous rabbit from the famous "that's the cutest fucking thing I've ever seen..." clip but it got away instead of getting shot. Also the ending with Joel when he says "I got you baby girl", his watch that Sarah bought him is front and center.

There was a point in the episode where the women were preparing food and a guy came in with a tub of meat and told them "it's venison". The viewer would tend to accept that, since we know they have the deer Ellie shot. But the very next scene shows David dragging the INTACT deer carcass into the restaurant. So, the "venison" obviously didn't come from it. So that's probably the first hint of cannibalism in the episode.

I think Neil Druckman and Craig Maizin took a lot of notes from the Walking Dead and understood the balance of when to use the Clickers/Infected and when to cut that out and focus on the "human" storyline. I also believe that they were self aware enough to know how much the game influenced the zeitgeist of the "zombie apocalypse" and want in some ways to subvert that. A lot of people who loved the walking dead, comics and the show both singularly and together, stopped watching after awhile; not just for story or a character leaving but because it just felt like torture porn. There was this almost oppressive feeling of no hope, constant fight or flight and people devolving from an exploration of the fall of humanity, morality and society to "what's the most fucked up thing or character we can create and how can they interact with the group?" I mean , there was a reason that there was never a sequel to Lord of the Flies. In the Last of Us tv show, there are these beautiful and hopeful moments of Bill and Frank, Sam and Henry and the growing relationship of Ellie and Joel. I don't know if season 2 will jump right into Part II or if they will use the flashbacks consistent with Bella Ramsey's current age and build a story off of that. I would like to see some original storylines or filling in the bits and pieces between flashbacks. I think if Neil and Craig don't do Part II in season 2, it's going to be that climb to the top of the rollercoaster before it makes its descent. Plus, I don't think they would want to lose Bella or minimize her role on the show after her performance in season one or conclude Joel's storyline in season 2. House of the Dragon was smart by saying flat out in promotional marketing that there would be a time jump and that two different actors would be playing the same character. I think HBO will want to stretch out the Last of Us into four maybe 5 seasons depending on what Naughty Dog does with the LoU Part III or other games in the same universe. They could always split a season into two parts or they might even be plans for a spin off, maybe the early years or maybe a spin off (not necessarily connected to the "game" but its own story).

I heard another reactor talking about the lack of infected in the show and I kind of agree with his point. It's not so much that the story should be about the infected. But the lack kind of decreases the sense of impending danger around every corner that the game had. For me though they are truly nailing the story even with the changes. I'm absolutely loving it!! This episode was amazing. Troy got an epic death scene and we got Joel in full badass destroyer mode. Bella though. I had my doubts before the show because they facially look so different. My god they've been incredible throughout and this was the best I've seen!
@Riftsrunner
@Riftsrunner Жыл бұрын
I think the lack of infected is because they are really only two dimensional. It isn't like they have much depth to mine. They only real purpose is to keep the player on their toes as there could be one around the next corner, or in the next room. When you are trying to tell a story, unless you make new infected that have other priorities besides just passing on the infection, you kind of have to step back on having infected showing up every other scene. It would just cause a very disjointed narrative where the plot gets interrupted by having the characters fighting off infected.
@clover2739
@clover2739 Жыл бұрын
I think people don’t realise that technically… there’s only been 3episodes where there have been no infected at all. Plus the infected in the show are way tougher which they’ve shown, like people want more bloaters but the 5th episode showed that you really can’t defeat a bloater in the show
@Riftsrunner
@Riftsrunner Жыл бұрын
@@clover2739 Bloaters are defeatable, just not in a flood of other infected. That is the offset, as they become stronger they also become slower. The only reason the bloater was such a vicious enemy in that situation was everybody was trying to fend off the lesser faster infected. If the number of infected were in a range everyone could handle without being over their heads, the bloater would just be a more difficult kill. Sure, they would probably lose many, but it is very survivable.
@clover2739
@clover2739 Жыл бұрын
@@Riftsrunner actually the reason I said that is because the creators of the show itself said if you encounter a bloater is the show world you are screwed because they really are basically impossible to defeat
