It always amuses me, when I watch people's reaction to the 3 episode and there's the table scene and people say "Romeo and Juliet", while Bill says in this very scene, "This isn't the tragic suicide at the end of the play". 🤣🤣

From watching the podcast with Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman, it's a reference to a play that played into the "bury your gays" trope. It's basically a stereotype in entertainment that gay people cannot live long, fulfilling lives, but have to die tragically "at the end of the play".

this show is AMAZING. and one thing i love about episode three is that on the surface level it might seem like frank is frivolous or delusional, but what he's doing in keeping up the houses is important. if you notice bill's house when frank first arrives it's pretty barren, there's dust on things. when they're older you see that the walls are filled with paintings, there are fresh flowers everywhere. it was pretty much a bunker for bill for most of his life and frank turned it into a home. bill knew how to survive, but frank showed him how to LIVE.

8:45 Emergency takeoffs. lol 14:12 To Tommy. Like, they just talked about it in the previous scene. 25:32 There's actually a few more, like in the first episode on Sarah's pillow, or when Ellie was looking out into the night at the window. 49:15 Ellie: "So who is Bill & Frank? The Radio is a smuggling code, right?" - Tess: "Get her to Bill & Franks, they'll take it from there." - Ellie: "Are Bill & Frank nice?" Joel: "Frank is..." - Reactors: "I don't trust this Frank guy... 🤔" 53:05 With a forklift. 54:05 As we know, Bill would've dodged bullet like Neo from the Matrix if he didn't got distracted by Frank! Seriously. You shit talking him so much, even though he's literally the reason Bill learned to actually live instead of just to survive. The game version of them is a much bleaker story. 55:39 So you'd rather have your partner very slowly and very painfully die, because they'll lose the ability to breath and swallow on their own? 1:15:54 & 1:16:15 Seriously... How the fuck do you play through the game, twice, and forget about Henry & Sam?! 1:24:35 Edelstein? He's dead. Kathleen shot him. Christ almighty. 1:28:41 KC... 1:35:35 Not the only space reference btw. She said the interior of the pickup truck was "like a spaceship" and the craters in Boston were like "a fucked up moon", and there's some references in her room in the next episode too. Also, the sheep ranches on the moon comment from Joel is kinda cute and in contrast to his earlier "oh it's we" comment, because he kinda combined both of their dreams, indicating him warming up to her - whether he wants to or not. 1:51:00 They are indeed infected. In the game you find audio recorders of one of the researchers. They basically infected them manually to try to find a cure. And while they aren't directly affected by the cordyceps they still transmit them. The whole episode is btw much better if you would've played Part 2 as well with how many references they threw in there. In the first game you don't even enter Jackson, you only see it from one of the mountains / hills surrounding it. Part 2 would've also had Joel singing. 2:03:26 Remember the talk with Tess in episode 2 on the highway? 2:09:47 She plugged it into the audio system of the store. 2:13:40 Part 1 hits even harder and way different if you went through Part 2. 2:39:10 Because they saw the signs of fighting. 2:39:50 But not Frank. lol While it can be morally questionable to not ask Ellie, Joel would've done this either way, even if Ellie would have agreed to it, which she obviously would have. For Joel it isn't just about Ellie as a person, but also her basically being a replacement for Sarah. That's why the whole Sarah talk was also so weird. Or when he opened up about his suicide attempt and told her that it wasn't time that healed him. It might sound like a sweet comment, but it's actually a lot of codependency pressure being put onto Ellie in that moment. So while the Fireflies acted for the greater good, to save humanity and all its future generations from extinction through the the cordyceps, Joel instead went the selfish path and prioritized his personal feelings over everyone else - including all the friends and families of the people he murdered in the hospital. I personally would recommend to play Part 2. Not just because it will be multiple seasons, which are years away from coming as a TV adaptation, but also because I think knowing Part 1 didn't really hamper my enjoyment from this great adaptation - quite the contrary. I even think knowing the full story, including Part 2, made it even better. And while Part 2 was sort of controversial, it's mostly just a loud minority. The game was hugely successful and has many fans, me included, who think it's even the better game. Even Part 1 was at the time kinda controversial because of this ending, but at the time we of course also didn't know whether we ever see a continuation until many years later. It's just that people playing the game identified and idolized with Joel, so they didn't really like that the game portrayed him in this negative way. It's a certain cognitive dissonance between what they want to have and what the game is actually about. Also, Part 2 is much darker than even Part 1, which already was a pretty dark game. I can only recommend to play through it with an open mind and accept the emotions that the game wants you to feel. Definitely do a re-watch after playing both games. If you want some decent show suggestions: Attack On Titan (Subtitled, don't look up anything about it, not even the slightest search - it's the most spoiler heavy show in existence), Invincible (beware the post credit scenes & the Atom Eve special between season 1 & 2), Silo (HUGE underdog because it's on Apple's streaming service), The Legend of Vox Machina (It's an adaptation of a years long D&D campaign setting called Critical Role between certain voice actors, including Ashley Johnson & Laura Bailey).

I randomly stumbled upon your channel. TLOU is one of my favorite works of fiction, ever. Great reaction video. I watched the entire thing, in one sitting. I absolutely love the character of Joel, and I adore both Troy Baker's and Pedro Pascal's portrayals. I've played the original game over 12 times, have the platinum, and have played Part II multiple times as well. One thing I always bring up, in the discussion regarding Joel's decision with the Fireflies... he's seen the true horrors of what humanity has become. Those 20 years were clearly some dark times for Joel. Enough to drive his brother away. Enough for Tommy's wife not to trust him, based solely off his experience. Enough for bad people to legitimately fear him. He eventually decided that what was left of the world wasn't worth Ellie's life. He knew she had no one else. No one to protect her. At that point, she was his, and he was hers. He so desperately wanted to give her the life that Sarah had taken from her. There was no guarantee it would work. Not only did they not give Ellie a choice, she didn't even know she had to die, for a chance at a cure. This is explained in both the game, and show. After meeting the Fireflies, she wanted Joel to teach her how to swim. They also talked about him teaching her to play the guitar. She thought her blood was the answer, not sacrificing her life. Of course, this doesn't mean she wouldn't have made the choice. But, the situation, in that moment, was that she didn't know she was going to die. And, unless he did something that instant, she was going to. That was simply unacceptable, for him. As co-writer for the show, Craig Mazin said, about that final episode... in that moment, Joel became incapable of failing. Sadly, he couldn't live with her knowing what he did. So, he lied.

Where the cordyceps came from: In episode 1 you hear on the radio that there is an emergency at a flour plant in Jakarta. The elderly neighbour who got infected was eating scones and cookies, Joel and Sarah declined to eat some when they were offered. Sarah mentioned that she couldn't make Joel a birthday cake because they were out of flour and he needed to pick up a cake but they never ate it, which is why they didn't get infected. In the opening, the scientist in the 60's mentioned that global warming could possibly make a strain of adaptogenic cordyceps able to survive in higher temperatures and only one or 2 degrees would make them able to survive in the human body and take over. The scientist mentioned a mold strain called ergot which was mentioned in research about The Salem Witch Trials. At the time of the Witch Trials, the wheat they were growing in Salem was infected with ergot mold because it was a very rainy season. Ergot can cause hallucinations and bodily ticks and twitches which explains why they thought that certain people were bewitched when they were really just sick from eating infected wheat.

He HAD to lie. Ellie would've said yes, kill me, and he knows he cannot survive that. Also, she is a traumatized CHILD, she shouldn't make that decision. HE is her father now, he makes the decision. I'm 100% with Joel. He did what he had to do. I really hope they both win Emmys because their performances were INCREDIBLE.

was he lying though? seems to me Marlene was lying first, and when he discovered Marlene's lie, he wasn't going to let another one of his kid's die, because the kid didn't have all the information Plus, from the medical side, the cure is all about her blood, nothing invasive should have been done
@sdhartley74

I think a lot of people overlook the fact that even if the Fireflies or Marlene had asked Ellie, and she had said yes, it still was not ethical to even ask her, a child - traumatized, no less... I think if you're going to ask that of anyone, they had better be a fully informed adult with a psychological examination first. And the doctor "thinks" it will work? Hell no.

Series: I'd suggest Heartstopper--teen romantic comedy/drama adapted from a graphic novel, scripted by its creator (Alice Oseman is as closely involved in it as TLOU game director/writer Neil Druckman was involved in this series) , directed by a man best known for his horror/suspense work. It's also a similar time commitment: two season of eight half-hour episodes. And it leans into and then subverts its genre tropes in very similar ways to this series.

2:57:36 Yes Joel gave Ellie an out absolutely. BUT Ellie fully expected to live. She stated she would go anywhere he wanted even to the Moon. She was expecting them to take samples, do tests and then she was free to go, not to cut open her brain and kill her. Ellie is a Survivor look how hard she fought vs. David.

If interested for your own viewing, HBO has a youtube podcast on their channel for each episode of the show with the Director and the Game creator talking about them. Hosted by the voice actor for Joel for the game. They talk about some of the choices they made in what they kept or didn't. And some dialogue incite. There is some really good discussion from them. Oh there is also an LA Times video, a round table with Diego Luna, Helen Mirren, Christina Ricci, Patrick Stewart, Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) and the youngest person there... Bella Ramsey. That's the level of actors she is paired up with at her age, which is an accurate assessment of her skill IMO. It is funny you catch a bit of awe of Bella from some of these seasoned actors.

What people don't understand is that Joel's rampage at the hospital had nothing to do with what happened between him and Marlene. Marlene and the Fireflies at this point were just unfortunately on Joel's way. If you remember Bill's letter to Joel. It said "We do everything to protect the people we love and God help the motherf***ers who get in our way". This is something that is in Joel's nature. Shaped by trauma of losing his daughter. By this time in this episode also, Joel and Ellie have chosen each other. When Ellie says she'll follow Joel anywhere after they are done with the mission. Joel also tells Ellie that she saved him and gave his life purpose again. Joel has officially taken the role of Ellie's father. It's unsaid and yet official. And then Joel is put in that situation with Marlene and the Fireflies. And they basically tell him they are going to kill his daughter... That's all he hears. Nothing else matters. He tells Marlene "You don't understand" What this means is that Ellie saved Joel. She gave him a purpose to live for. Like Bill told Frank. "I was never scared before you." Joel is hit with a choice between possibly saving the world and losing another daughter. And it is the easiest choice of his life. He just can't lose another daughter again. And even when he lies to Ellie about what happened at the hospital to basically protect her. It was a decision any parent would easily make without hesitation. You can see that Joel has decided he can't lose another daughter. Even if he has to protect Ellie from herself. Something parents do all the time. Also, it's funny how ppl are saying Joel should let Ellie make a choice between life and death. My question to these ppl is... Would you let your 14 year old daughter make such a decision? The vaccine is not even a sure bet. It's just a possibility. It's very hypocritical because we all know we would make the same decision as Joel without hesitation if it were our loved ones. It's the only choice.

You recognized Ashley Johnson who played Ellie in the game, but I’m surprised you didn’t recognize or acknowledge the actor who played Joel in the game. Maybe you did but edited it out. Troy Baker played Joel in the game and also played James, the creepy guy David’s sidekick who went back for the medicine. And, of course, Marlene actually was the same actor in the game as the series.

That was rad...now do all of Arcane in one big video like this. I love this long form. Give it. :D In the end scene during the game I didn't give much thought to the repercussions because I had just spent like 20hrs with Joel and Ellie. In the car ride after though, I realized what I had done, what WE had done. It is an excellent scene and well executed but being commiserate in destruction of what could have been a cure was the most conflicted I have felt by a conclusion of a game. Naughty Dog made something special in these games and this series encapsulates teh core part of it so well and manages to flesh out the world. Phil has the right of it though, after that scene where Joel floats the idea of not going through with it and she dismisses it immediately and clearly. If Marlene had given Ellie the choice, I think she would have sacrificed herself even knowing it would kill her. Joel betrayed Ellie in the end and himself. Now Kate can play part 2 if she hasn't already and maybe Phil too if he doesn't mind getting spoiled (Edit: The flip-slop of roles would be dope. It was controversial because people are lame, it wasn't TLOU Part1 until teh PS5 remake; it was just TLOU). As someone who had already played the games, I didn't feel spoiled at all they managed to make it fresh enough. Whatever awards it gets this year it deserve

Regarding Henry: He's the bad guy. He knowingly delivered a human being into the clutches of his killers for personal gain. No matter how you slice it, this is accessory to murder. Or do you think differently about all the collaborators like there were in World War II, for example? Regarding Ellie and Joel: Joel made this decision primarily for his own benefit, as he would not have been able to bear the loss of another "daughter". In principle, therefore, it was a selfish decision that only applied secondarily to Ellie as a person.

As i always say: 100% Team Joel on this moral dilemma. Would probably been different if they asked Ellie before and she volunteered and said goodbye to him. Btw. the fireflies were just stupid. They KNEW how dangerous Joel can be and they KNEW how close he was to her. So it was pretty obvious that he either would try to free her or take revenge if it would be to late. So if the fireflies were willing to sacrifice Ellie for the greater good, they should have sacrified Joel as well.

Joel shouldn't have lied, but should have done what he did. The selfish act was the lie. Let us not forget Ellie is 14 years old. FOURTEEN YEARS OLD. She is a child. A child with sever trauma and massive signs and red flags screaming survivors guilt. Is a 14 year old child dealing with those levels of trauma really in the correct mind set to make a decision like that? I would also just ask to please think through the entire situation logically. It has been 20 years since there was any sort of formal or recognizable society. Are people going to school and university to study brain surgery? If not, how old was that doctor claiming he could do it? People just assume it is guaranteed this brain surgery will work. When there is zero evidence to support it. Why was there so little testing? Why is it a huge rush to immediately perform life ending brain surgery with out at least attempting to exhaust other options? Haven't the 2 experts that had studied this for decades pre-apocalypse say there are no cures or vaccines? Why should we believe that someone in an abandoned hospital, with little to no examination can perform unprecedented brain surgery to create an unprecedented vaccine or cure? Sure you can say its a show that's why. Suspension of disbelief and what not, but that feels weak to me and just wholly unsatisfying given the story they have told and the world they have built. You should feel torn at first, but after spending time thinking about it, Joel's decision becomes the right decision, for the wrong reasons. Which just adds more layers to it and in some ways makes it feel more real and grounded. It wouldn't be the first time someone did the right thing accidentally for the wrong reasons.

Like y’all are glued to the screen but missing half of the context because you never stop talking about stuff that’s 75% irrelevant or just having emotional reactions that don’t make sense. If you child is dying in your arms I doubt you’re going to be in a rage…. You’re going to be distraught. And obviously the officer has a hard time shooting her. It’s the entire reason he hesitates and you see it on their faces they don’t want to have to do this. Yalls completely wrong read on Frank…. I feel like y’all are just watching an entirely different show or you’re just taking about random stuff to the point you’re missing so much.

Give Ellie the choice? What kind of choice is that for a 14 year old kid? "Hey, do you mind if we kill you to save the world?" You cant put that on a child, or anyone for that matter. Also, what if Ellie says "Hell no, ya aint killing me"? You gonna let the cure for the apocalypse just walk away? No, this isn't resolved by putting it on Ellie, that's just the cowards way of avoiding taking responsibility for killing a kid. Marlene did the right thing. She had no intention of letting Ellie walk away, so Ellie didn't have a choice, so Marlene didn't pretend otherwise. Marlene had taken the decision that Ellie was going to die to make the cure. She was Ellies executioner and she tried to make it as painless as possible. But ...I would have done exactly what Joel did - if you need to kill kids to save the world, maybe the world doesn't deserve to be saved? Either way, Ellie is his daughter and that is that ...though I wouldn't have lied about it to Ellie.

@@rx7dude2006 Can a 14 year old choose to drink? Can they choose to drive? Can they choose to have a tattoo? Can they choose to get married? No, because they are too young to consent. But you think putting the weight of THIS onto a child is reasonable? You gonna let her go if she says she doesnt want to die? Of course not. You just want her to agree to be killed so you pretend she has consented and you dont have to carry the guilt of murdering her. She has no choice. Marlene is gonna kill her whether she wants to die or not and pretending to give her a choice, does not absolve her from the responsibility of killing a child. Oh and how about making an argument for your point of view, rather than just calling someone dumb? That's if you're able to put a sentence together?

Great reaction. Personally I feel Joel was completely in the wrong and the Fireflies in the right. Obviously I understand Joel's unwillingness to go through the same pain he felt losing Ellie as he did losing Sarah, but Sarah's death was pointless and unnecessary, whereas Ellie's death could've potentially saved the human race. Even a minuscule chance of developing a vaccine is worth one girl's life in a world where girls like Ellie are routinely tore apart by clickers or murdered by raiders. Ellie would've absolutely sacrificed herself for even a small chance of a cure.
@cullenarthur8879

I think of it like this, Marlene did the wrong thing for the right reasons, and Joel did the right thing for selfish reasons. Marlene violated Ellie's bodily autonomy because she didn't get her permission for the procedure. Joel saved Ellie from having her bodily autonomy violated, but not because he was a hero, but because he selfishly couldn't bare losing another daughter. He has shown time and again in this series to only care about himself and those he considers family. Marlene, on the other hand, has shown that she cares about the bigger picture and will make sacrifices for the greater good. Remember the first words Joel says after Marlene tells him about the procedure? "Find someone else." He couldn't care less about the ethics of the procedure, he just couldn't lose another daughter, and he was willing to doom humanity for her.

I think the problem with the Fireflies is that they don’t actually know if taking samples from Ellie’s brain WILL help make a cure. They have primitive technology compared to what we have now and as they explain earlier in the show, there was no existing cure up to that point for fungal infection. They were blindly running into this idea without knowing it would work. They were willing to kill a child knowing full well it could be for nothing.
