Mark playing this is just like a stroll in the park for him... It seems so effortless but those who know a little bit of guitar playing realizes this guy is a true legend! Bless you, Mark! You're one of true gods of guitar!

Sultans is the song Mark most plays with in his shows. Every version is slightly different than the one before. I think he does it to keep from being bored silly. He's been doing this song for how many years now? 40 or so? That's a long time. He treats the song like it's an old friend he's chatting up again, and just has fun with it.

I haven't seen any two performances of this song that were the same, but he doesn't seem to have ever played it wrong. Not sure he ever even bothered to learn it, it just seems like a virtuoso level improvisation every time. Just incredible.

My friend and I had just completed the first part of our conscription and he made a suggestion that we have a "social season" as celebration. It would be for December only.....which turned out to be two years. One morning he came to my place all excited about a song he heard the previous evening - did not quite catch the name but he thinks it is called " satans slaves". We went to every record shop in the city - nobody knew or heard of it & making fools of ourselves. Eventually turned out to be Sultans of Swing. Guess we listened fo it a zillion times. 🙃l

The one and only song my husband actually sang live in a Karaoke show and one more time going busking with me ! I will never forget you Scott ! Hoping you can still see me and that I have bought my first e-guitar on our wedding anniversary. I am practicing every day, hoping to get better so I can get back into recording music. Our Rolling Home is for sale and it breaks my heart, but I simply don't know how to live without you any more. Maybe music can help me to cope, but I'm missing your touch, your energy, your cooking, your love, your smile and even your singing! You always sang along to my music and I loved your husky voice. I know it's crazy to write this here in a youtube channel, but I only found out today that people are actually reading this sometimes. So maybe your soul can also read what I type. And Mark Knopfler, just in case you get to read this by any chance, you are my husbands hero and I am trying to learn to play like you (starting now). Wish me luck! Love your music !!!!!

True, Eric Clapton said it took him THREE WEEKS to learn the song so he could play with Dire Straits. It is incredibly difficult and Knopfler makes it look effortless...
@Case_
@Case_ 10 ай бұрын
@@toddrichardson8595 That sound very improbable. When or where did he say it? I would kinda sorta believe it would take Clapton three weeks to learn to play Mark's part of the song reasonably close to how Mark plays it, but as far as I know, Clapton never played his part when playing with Knopfler/Dire Straits, he always played rhythm guitar with maybe some improvised bits here and there. And the rhythm part of this song is not a three weeks kind of thing, especially not for someone like Clapton who has decades of experience with being able to join someone pretty much on the spot. Three hours, maybe.

Mark is on a level few will ever reach but compare this to say a recent video of Clapton, Buddy Guy or Eddie Van Halen. This has TONS of missed notes, especially the last minute or so of the last solo. You will NEVER see any of those guys I mentioned, along with tons of other guitar heros making that many mistakes. This was not a good performance by his standards.

There are events which happen in every person's life which are indelibly imprinted as to time and place and are never forgotten. One such event in my life was the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Another event in my life was the first time I heard Sultans of Swing by a then unknown band called Dire Straits. I was in Paris. It was late at night. I was in bed with with an ear phone plugged into my transistor radio listening to Radio Luxemborg when that amazing song suddenly started playing. I was blown away by the balls of the guitarist playing the most amazing licks I had ever heard. It still blows me away 40+ years later each time I hear it. Thank you to whoever posted this fabulous video. Mark is as good as ever. The 36 (at the time of this writing) who voted thumbs down you all can go to hell. You're clueless.

The thing about Mark Knopfler is he NEVER plays the same thing twice. Many guitarists play the same solos note for their entire careers. Mark Knopfler improvises every night he plays! Sometimes it is absolutely brilliant, sometimes not so great. I heard a couple of "wrong" notes in this version....but the next day he would play it differently again. Jeff Beck is similar in that he always improvises in songs. But Knopfler is a genius. To me it is all about the note you play...not how many notes you can play. Knopfler is a master of knowing just how many notes to play.

I see it. Definite decline in motor skill coordination. Phrasing is much different than his younger days. However, he's an aging guitarist. They ALL lose their sharpness eventually. The last AC/DC tour, Angus Young sounded like a hamfist just trying to play the opening riff of "Riff Raff" correctly. Eric Clapton has admitted recently as well that playing has become a struggle of his. Knopfler is still legendary. He's still amazing, but yes, there is a pronounced difference here and it's clear.

Right, by no means is he awful, but aging has burned out his fire. Like I said, it happens, and it's certainly detectable to those of us who are good analysts of guitar playing. I brought up being able to see it in Angus Young, but probably one of the worst I've seen it happen to is Ace Frehley. While he was never super polished to begin with, he plays like a first-year diddler at Guitar Center anymore. There's a live performance of "Parasite" and the riff is so choppy from Ace's loss of motor function that it's sad. I'm hoping with any luck that enough testosterone and HGH therapy when I get old will keep me sharp and muscles strong, LOL.

Me da mucha lastima.

Too bad he couldnt bother to sing it like he recorded it. That is what people pay to see/hear. I get the urge to change it up after the 10,000th time - but please don't.

Sultans Of Swing (Les Sultans Du Swing) You get a shiver in the dark Tu frissonnes dans l'obscurité It's raining in the park but meantime Il pleut dans le parc mais entre-temps South of the river you stop and you hold everything Au sud de la rivière tu t'arrêtes et toute chose est mise en suspens A band is blowing Dixie double four time Un groupe souffle du Jazz Dixieland en 4/4 You feel all right when you hear that music ring Tu te sens bien dès que tu entends ce morceau de musique You step inside but you don't see too many faces Tu pénètres à l'intérieur mais tu ne vois pas beaucoup de visages Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down Venir à l'intérieur à l'abri de la pluie pour entendre le jazz Too much competition too many other places Trop de concurrence trop d'autres lieux But not too many horns can make that sound Mais peu de trompettes peuvent produire un tel son Way on downsouth, way on downsouth London town Sur la route du sud, sur la route du sud de la ville de Londres You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords Tu cobserves George à la guitare, il connaît tous les accords Mind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing Note qu'il ne se préoccupe que de la rythmique, il ne cherche pas à faire chanter ou pleurer sa gratte And an old guitar is all he can afford Et une vieille guitare est tout ce qu'il peut s'offrir When he gets up under the lights to play his thing Quand il apparaît dans la lumière pour jouer son morceau And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene Et Harry se moque de ne pas faire de scène He's got a daytime job he's doing alright Il a un boulot de jour il s'en sort pas mal He can play honky tonk just like anything Il sait jouer le Honky Tonk de même que n'importe quoi d'autre Saving it up for Friday night Il réserve ça pour la nuit du vendredi With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing Avec les Sultans, avec les Sultans du Swing And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner Et un groupe de gamins font les imbéciles dans un coin Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles Soûls et habillés de leur plus beau pantalon bouffant marron et de chaussures compensées They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band Ils ne prêtent aucune attention au moindre groupe jouant de la trompette It ain't what they call rock and roll Ce n'est pas ce qu'ils appellent du rock and roll And the Sultans played Creole Et les Sultans jouèrent du Créole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone Et ensuite il y a cet homme qui s'approche du microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings Et il dit à la fin alors que la cloche retentit 'Thank you goodnight now it's time to go home' 'Merci bonne nuit maintenant il est temps de rentrer' And he makes it fast with one more thing Et il ajoute rapidement un petit détail supplémentaire 'We are the Sultans of Swing' 'Nous sommes les Sultans du Swing'
