After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

Also, Geoff Follin took a lot of Scott Bradley's snippets of tunes from the original cartoons, but the way they mesh together makes for some uncanny valley. Really listen to the old T&J cartoons to be reminded just how the music made up half of the cartoons
@JohnDoe-wq5eu
@JohnDoe-wq5eu 3 ай бұрын
Supposedly the music and the slapstick violence were carefully timed with a metronome. It's literally perfectly timed, the music and what you see on screen. This is back when Hannah and Barbera were the real deal before they became synonymous with reusing animation and a stoner and his talking dog and his friends that in a van solved mysteries. This was pure HB, before it became something very different.

I think Jerry is meant to be throwing marbles? I can't guess what else it could be. Also honestly, as bad as this game may be, it looks pretty darn good. That walking animation is so smooth, it looks better than what some SNES games were able to do. And the distortion of his sprite while he's in the bubble at 2:30, that's awesome! This game was surprisingly popular as a bootleg in the Famiclone areas from what I've read. There are a few games like that, such as this, Zen: The Intergalactic Ninja and a few more, mostly from the last years of the NES. I only rented this one, but I recall it being 'okay-ish'. There are some issues with the platforming and the weapon you have isn't the best, but the game isn't that bad.

The weirdest thing about was that it was quite short and had almost reverse difficulty curve. It's decent game, but of course if we compare with Konami games it will be much lower. There is good side and bad /annoying sides. Also, this game have bunch of secret on almost every level (you need to enter mouse hole or jump at same platform and go throught level boundary). One little trick - you can make huge level skip in roof level. You're starting at top of level and later you need to jump into big hole, but actually you can jump over it using leaf that flying to right side - bouncing from it.

I remember finding this modestly fun many years ago. Not sure why it's not well-known considering that it's based on one of the bigger cartoon franchises. The SNES having just come out and bad experiences with licensed games (they've gotten a lot better since then) would be my guess. That reminds me. Ever played Felix the Cat? Not that it's a bad game but I have to wonder how the hell it exists. Unlike Tom and Jerry, that's not a particularly big animated franchise, let alone in the 1990's. Thought I'd get that out in case you never review it.

Despite not being that good, I think this was what ignited my love for games where you play as something very small in ordinary domestic settings. There have been other games that scratch the same itch - Rescue Rangers, some levels of Little Nemo, and of course the finest example of the style, Toy Commander on the Dreamcast - but they are sadly rare in recent times.

The sprite work in this game is great. Jerry's run cycle, those extra large squirrels, the helicopter seeds... It makes the game more of a disappointment in a way.

Heh, I know someone that actually owned this game back in the day. 😄 TBH, for its time, the only real problem with this game was its gameplay. BTW, I read the game's manual way back when, and the balls Jerry's slinging from his tail are supposed to be marbles.

Rented this back in the day. I think the Ievels are too long for what should be a kids game. Furthest I got was the first Tom encounter. Bubble is useful in the pipe level i think there are some items/powerups you can only get by using it.

Only way i could beat this game as a kid was to find the enemy that stay still and never dies and just shoot at it to get enough lifes to manage the last level., the last lvl just crank up the dificult to lvl 9-10 and you die so easily.

I tried to like Tom and Jerry on NES. I couldn't get into it and I decided not to finish it. I'd rather play Silver Surfer and I beat it 4 times. I enjoy the Tom and Jerry cartoons. Mostly the Hanna-Barbera versions. I have 3 volumes on DVD.

"Tom and Jerry" barely translates well to the video game realm. As a hardcore fan of the old MGM "Tom and Jerry" cartoons, I think I have a theory. It's not the most aesthetically outstanding cartoon series out there. Oh sure, it had amazingly detailed and fluid animation for its time, its humor was top notch, the background art was amazingly detailed, but that would not make for great video game iconography, unless you think on the line of cinematic experiment games like Flashback or current 2D HD gaming jewel Cuphead. If all you could make was a simple 2D platformer, the cartoons couldn't inspire a lot. In this game's case, TOM's limbs and facials remain static most of the time. You really have to have a really unique gameplay design to make a game that's remotely worth the license, like Sega/SIMS's "Tom and Jerry: The Movie" on the Master System, or the overabundance of sprites in Software Creations' "Tom vs Jerry: The Chase Is On!" on the SNES.

Hi Tech Expressions is a perfect example of PC vs Console game producing. Not that their PC output was any good either. This is probably the most video game like game they ever published, though, so I'd give them that much credit. And I do appreciate the background music being based on an actual Tom and Jerry cartoon soundtrack. Anyway, Hi Tech did have an unfinished, prototype SNES Tom and Jerry game that looked like it had some promise. It was far more like playing a Tom and Jerry cartoon than this was. Too bad we never got anything other than a leaked ROM.
