After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

Yet another damn good looking NES game. These late-era NES games have great graphics and design. Developers were so comfortable with the system.

Without a shred of shame I'll say I love this game way more than the SNES version.. and I definitely like the SNES version. The arcade is definitely another story, but if I want a single player Final Fight experience nothing tops these awesome super expressive cartoony designs and the satisfying light RPG mechanics, not to mention a serious contender for BEST OST on the entire NES.

I never played this game because I jumped onto the 16-bit train in 1989 with my Sega Genesis and rarely looked back. I got my Snes in 1991 and Sega CD in 1992...I haven't stopped but I do play retro games now. I remember reading about Final Fight on the Nes and wishing the experience point system would be brought over to the 16-bit machines as it always seemed so damn cool.

This is one of my all-time favorite NES games. I used to rent this one all the time from one of our local mom'n'pop video game stores growing up. Quite literally the only criticism I have against it is that its single-player. I wish I could grab a copy of this as a kid to have in my collection as an adult

Apparently there are hacks that let you play 2-player but I think it's still the same number of enemies which seems underwhelming. Still cool though!

I was wondering when this one would would show up on my feed. I've been watching a lot of your videos lately and I know you are a late NES library aficionado. Man I gotta say I played a lot of NES late as well (I never got a SNES till late 93) and this one was one of the greats. At the time I didn't think they could do any better with the NES

That late era (which is unfortunately the most pricy) is definitely the most impressive. Maybe not the best games in the library, but the most impressive for sure.

Guy have a secret super move. You need to make a backflip (Up+Back+A), and after the character touches the ground, immediately press Up+B. Cody have a secret one too, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. The combination that is given on the Internet does nothing. Or maybe I just have crooked hands)

Very good job on this review. I can see that you had to have a few playthroughs just to get all that footage, really nice work! I've always known about this game being a single player affair, and I agree with you, that it's probably the major detractor. Thank you for sharing!
@BigOleWords

It takes more time to play through the whole game with each character, but it makes editing a lot easier. I could just rotate which character I’m showing and then the next time they come up show a different background or move set. Videos like this are way easier to do than game like Castelian or Harris where the footage is mostly static and similar.

Mighty Final Fight on the NES is a take on the Super Nintendo game Final Fight what it lacks in the 16-bit graphics than makes up for an 8-bit charm But like the SNES ports, Mighty Final Fight is a single-player game. However, unlike the SNES versions, it retains all three playable characters from the arcade version. The game also has various features not seen in a Final Fight game up to that point, including an experience points system allowing players to earn new fighting maneuvers. I played this game on the now-defunct website years ago. Then I played the Super Nintendo version of Final Fight on the now-defunct website years ago. I need to say, I played a lot of NES (I never got an Super Nintendo until 2002, at which time the N64, GameCube, PS2 and Xbox were well in full swing).

@@BigOleWords Strangely enough, the way this mod works is that the second player takes control of one of the enemies on screen. I don't really remember if they implemented more enemies to compensate for this, but I think they duplicated the enemy that the second player takes control of. Very interesting mod!

@BigOleWords

I'm not great on the technical stuff, but basically the hardware can only handle a certain number of sprites on screen at a time. The way games got around this was basically alternating on the screen which sprites were temporarily invisible which would then allow you to have more in view since they're basically taking turns occupying the memory of the hardware. I think :)
