I know first hand that these eyes wide shut parties happened in London. At least they did in late 80's early 90's I don't know what goes on today. I had an 'oh shit' moment when the movie came out because they are real My friend actually ran out of one because he was convinced they were raising the devil I thought he was just doing too much drugs. I was young, I didnt understand at the time

The fact that Nicole starts genuinely tearing up here even though he just asked one question about Stanley's death makes it even more ridiculous that Kubrick is thought of as someone who was a cold, crazy filmmaker with no faith in mankind. He was clearly a warm person, who wanted to point out the flaws in humankind because there are enough Spielbergs in the world.

Yes I think this is especially true in his later years, maybe as a younger man he might have been more aggressive or took more risks that might have been hard for the people who worked with him. But when I see the pictures of him as an old man with a grey beard, I just wish I could hug him. In generel he seemed like a very warm person, at least to his friends and family.

"there are enough Spielbergs in the world." I was with you until this statement. Stanley respected Steven immensely, they were extremely close friends and he wouldn't have agreed with that. There may be imitators, but there's only one Spielberg, and there only ever will be one.

Totally disagree. Of Kubrick‘s oeuvre EWS is his least impressive. Barry Lyndon is his true masterpiece. I would say his most important? Is debatable. But it’s hard to find a film as bodacious and prescient as Dr. Strangelove. But Dr. Strangelove. It will continue to resonate as long as we have nuclear weapons and the likes of Donald Trumps in our midst.

When I first saw this film it knocked me for 6. I still have no idea why it affects me so much but this is why Kubrick was so good. He's able to use the medium to talk to your inner psyche, weaving in such complexity and deep meaning that it's impossible to not come away a different person or for the film to linger around your brain and intrigue you for weeks and months afterwards.

I was about 15 when I first watched The Shining and it gave me the same affect. The movie is stuck in my inner psyche and I get flashbacks of sorts when I got to hotels, elevators, see axes in cabinets, typewriters and especially large commercial kitchen settings. Also, when I see arty looking face masks, I think of Eyes Wide Shut. Last year, I was in an MRI machine and the claustrophobic feeling reminded me of 2001 A Space Odyssey. It felt like a computer would take over and the technician speaks to you through headphones. I kept expecting him to say.. "what are you doing Dave" "This is highly irregular". Kubrick was a genius and as we are witnessing his legacy is continuing on after his passing.

The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut and Clockwork Orange each had profound, enduring impacts on me - even decades later. I don't think any others have... some mysteries/psycho-dramas have some effect, but I end up forgetting them eventually. It's interesting what Kubrick can do and shift in a person through his films

Absolutely beautiful. She almost made me cry talking about what he taught her. ***** Sure if you're planning on turning every single minute detail into a symbol then it would take a long time to fully dissect, but on a core level the film is about marriage and deception. Sticking to the main themes, the film surely does not take years to understand. If you're going to say the film is important for all mankind to see, I'd expect you to be able to backup why you feel that way instead of making some excuse that it's too complicated to understand.

Nicole Kidman is a spectacular actress. Her performance in Eyes Wide Shut is perhaps her greatest role she's ever had. Stanley Kubrick ... words escape me when discussing the man. No one will ever become another Kubrick. Watching this interview brings us closer to Kubrick through someone else's experience. Kidman's refusal to end the interview was almost heartbreaking. It shows how much she loved the filmmaker. And by the way, whoever was trying to cut this interview short needs to shut it!

It's interesting that she mentions Kubrick's daughter toward the beginning of this interview. Kidman was married to Scientologist Cruise at the time, and Kubrick lost his daughter Vivian to Scientology around the time Eyes Wide Shut was made. It's one of my favorite movies, along with several others by Kubrick. I really don't think either Cruise or Kidman had any idea of the subtext of the movie when they made it, but it would have been impossible to have known it based on the script alone. Kubrick's storytelling is at least as visual and auditory as it is in the dialogue or plot. 2001: A Space Odyssey on paper is a cold story of artificial intelligence exerting will and killing people to survive, but the movie is the awesome story of collective humanity and an mundane-to-magical individual human life and rebirth thanks to the overall storytelling.
@sethisawesome
@sethisawesome 10 жыл бұрын
That's an unfair comparison. The two just had totally different sensibilities. Kubrick was methodical and a perfectionist, while Spielberg is much more intuitive and spontaneous. Kubrick would work on a single film for years; Spielberg is one of the fastest working directors out there, often shooting films in a few months. Both masters, just different, because they're different people.
@objectivelyawesome

Perfectly put. I am tired of people, mostly pretentious art film lovers, who love to call Spielberg a hack and overrated and that he destroyed cinema. I love Spielberg and I consider him a filmmaking genius just as I do with Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Griffith, Hitchcock, Bergman, Fellini, Lang and Renoir. A Kubrick film expresses things very differently than a Spielberg film, because Kubrick and Spielberg are two very different people with incredibly different perspectives on the world. And yet became so close, shared a special bond and admired each other’s work. Somehow theirs fans, mainly Kubrick fans, don’t share the same sentiment. I think comparing the two with terms like "better" or "worse" introduces a dichotomy that firstly shouldn't exist in intelligent discussion about cinema and secondly propagates incredibly destructive pretentious thought. My childhood was heavily influenced by both in a different way snd I can’t imagine a world without one of them.

Stanley Kubrick died 6 days after this movie was released and that just makes it even more creepy. Was Kubrick exposing on what goes behind behind Hollywood's closed doors with rich and powerful and elite and those wannabee's that wanted to be just like Nicole Kidman, and Tom Cruise because they had connections to people like CEOs VPs Politians and you name it. This movie was flimed for 2 yrs and Tom Cruise then his ex Wife Nicole Kidman were told to keep this movie a secret and Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise divorced in February 2001. Nicole Kidman's career sky rocketed and she is happily married to Keith Urban and she has two daughters and an oscar. Nicole Kidman was living under Tom's shadow before she was even divorced. Stanley Kubrick was on to something here with his last haunting flick Eyes Wide Shut. Another director who lived in Europe Roman Polanski made Rosemary's Baby and The 9th Gate with Johnny Depp and his wife was actress Sharon Tate who died in the hands of a sick cult the Manson Family in August 9 1969 and Roman Polanski made strange movies but he was on to something here.... with The 9th Gate with Johnny Depp.

damn she's beautiful here I remember waking up drunk on a couch at someones house with the eyes wide shut orgy scene playing on a big screen tv in a pitch black room, it was trippy. Anyway, that film is more than a movie, that's why so many people have mixed feelings about it. All his other films explain themselves beautifully, but not eyes wide shut. It's deep with secrets
@cybersecurity7466
@cybersecurity7466 9 жыл бұрын
I just gotta correct you there - his movies do not always explain themselves. Look at 2001 and then look deeper. Lots of symbolism thrown in almost just to test the audience
@wheelmanstan
@wheelmanstan 9 жыл бұрын
Sam Longmire yeah but we expect 2001 to end like that because of the subject, the unknown, atleast I did, all of his films have deep meaning and that's what makes them so re-watchable but eyes wide shut seems like much of the material is shrouded in secrecy, it's harder for the viewer to connect with, but done so intentionally, very vague, I need to watch it again though
@cybersecurity7466
@cybersecurity7466 9 жыл бұрын
wheelmanstan I agree with that. I haven't seen Eyes Wide Shut yet because of that exactly. I just haven't gotten myself ready for a movie that seems as cold and distant as it does despite the look of the shots i've seen being totally impeccable
@JacobInNormalLand
@JacobInNormalLand 9 жыл бұрын
Sam Longmire It's only deceptively cold and distant. Yes, there is a level of intentional artifice to it, but the places your mind and imagination travels to as the film washes over your psyche with towering, yet silent, crashing waves, is deeply powerful. By the end you'll feel drained on more levels than one, and then you realize your inner spirit has been dissected and messed with. I know, I sound pretentious as hell, but there is simply no other experience like EWS. The places it takes you, the rapturous spell it holds on your senses, the state of hypnotic wonder you slip into while feeling it. It's one of, if not the, most moving film Kubrick ever made. But not in the normal sense, it's a very singular, second to none, type of 'moving'. There is simply no other film, or singular state-of-mind, out there than that contained within Eyes Wide Shut. Just watch it, alone, in the middle of the night, it will possess you. It's my favorite Kubrick, and that's saying a lot. Among my top 10 favorite films of all time, and probably the greatest final film of any director. It's as if Kubrick imprinted his own self into the celluloid. But you really won't know until you go through it yourself.

There are no missing minutes, it's a rumor originated in a Reddit post. A few scenes were shot but not included in the movie, and those are well documented in books about the making of the film.

When she talks about the role, she goes back and forth between calling herself by her characters' name and speaking in the first person. Same with her husband at the time. In her next film, she ended up having an affair with a crew member on Moulin Rouge which ended her marriage to Tom when she told him about it. Ironic! I know people in the industry who have worked with her and I was told she is odd and intense in her private life. She's out there.
