@@UserHandle454 Yeah, episode 1000 just came out today. They are going to be making 10 episodes, most likely around 40 minutes long. The series will be extremely rushed. Vicious sucked. His character in the anime was cold, calculating, smart and ruthless. That's what made him such a good villain. The audience hated him but it was never explained how he became the way that he was. They never explained why he was so power hungry, why he viewed everyone as expendable or what his relationship with Spike and Julia was. There is a vague reference to them being brothers in arms and the suggestion of a love triangle, but we never got any answers. I was hoping the live action would explore some of that. But, they didn't. Instead Vicious was turned into a rage-full idiot without foresight or guile. Ed could have been cast better, I guess. I thought Spike was well cast actually. John Cho really nailed that roll, but it seemed like they were more focused on making the characters likable then believable. Faye really bothered me. Because her character was frustratingly juvenile in the anime. That's what made Jet Black such a cool character, because he knew that Faye was hurting and even tho she pissed him off, they still forgave her. That's what made them a family. Also Faye's character is supposed to be superficial, that's why her relationship with Ed works. She's so one denominational, at first, but Ed looks up to her, in a way, and that helps her to grow a little. Also Jet and Spike have a brotherhood and understanding between them that is in the live-action, I don't like the wrinkle that Jet didn't know that Spike was part of the syndicate. IDK it just seemed like there was enough mystery in the show to explore without changing the plot and loosing the characters.

The Anime was better mostly because it was Lean, and left so much untold. Same with the Terminator sequels, the original only had a bare-bones mythology and thus was better than the bullshit sequels that had no chance of being good and gave all the wrong details
@bohansenboh2 жыл бұрын
@Kurotetsu I didn't think Spike was white in the anime. I always saw him as Asian same with Faye and Ed. Jet was white, but having him cast as black didn't bother me, because the portrayal was true to the character. I don't think there is a white actor that I can think of who would have played jet and have done a better job. Josh Brolin comes to mind, but he's not physically big enough and probably wouldn't do it. Other than that the only actors I can think of are Jason Momoa and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, and I don't think they would have done it. Maybe you're just racist. IDK, but what the fuck does it matter? Anime characters are often created to be racially androgynous anyway, and Cowboy Bebop is no exception. Also CB was created by Japanese people and dubbed by white people for and English speaking audience. Also Beau Billingslea, the dub voice actor for Jet is black. Most of the original voice actors are Asian. So ... ... your point is really fucking weak. Like your dick ... probably.

I 100% believe that cowboy bebop, and many other anime's, can work as a live action show. Marvel films have shown that with the right vision, you can make it work. Visually, I can see a lot of love in its backgrounds, props, set designs and a multitude of other things. People working on this show clearly loved cowboy bebop. However, if the one(s) leading the ship don't know what they're adapting (or even worse, they THINK they know.) You get what we have now. A goofy spy-kids esque show that loses that "cool atmosphere" the original had, and this is coming from someone who didn't grow up with the series. I watched Bebop very late in the game, but while it had some funny/silly moments, they were never more then an off handed comment. A word of advice to anyone doing adaptions. For the love of god, stop trying to fix what isn't broken. Don't try to fix a character to the point where they become someone else entirely because you want to "bring them to the modern era", they were fine as they were, don't add in unnecessary sub-plots to a story that was good as it was. I fully understand that some things need to change when going from animation to live action, but the things that should remain as they were are the character's overall personality and the overarching story. A story like bebop had a delicate balance all the way through and when you try and change a bunch of shit because you want to "Update" it, you are looking at that balance and intentionally dropping a 500 pound weight onto one side with no care about the consequences. Oh well, better luck next time Space Cowboy. Hopefully we'll find someone who doesn't try to fix you.

I swear, every one of these projects where the creator is brought on as a "consultant" has taught us that when you hear that in relation to any of this kind of garbage, be ready for an absolute unmitigated disaster that even the creator urges you to stay away from. Dragonball Evolution had Akira Toriyama as a "consultant", and he later revealed he played almost no part in its production and would rather people just pretend it never happened. Tekken has Harada-san as a "consultant", he ended up revealing that he was basically a figurehead to keep the fans off the production team's case, had ZERO say in what went into the film, was not given any idea of how it was turning out during production, and regrets allowing it to happen, and he went as far as having Tekken: Blood Vengeance made as an apology to the fandom. This had Watanabe as a "consultant" and he revealed all the way back in 2019 that they were tossing out every note he provided and warned fans to go in with their expectations low.

@stuntmonkey002 жыл бұрын
This is exactly why it's failing. It's trying to mimic the western audience's memory of Bebop as a love letter ot western culture. It wasn't, it was a Japanese Yakuza noir movie with a lot of western homages. But lots of contemporary Japanese art has a western infatuation, just read Haruki Murakami for one. Bebop's western generation is a really odd one, because that's the generation that keeps trying to say that "the English version is better", whereas nobody from Gen Z today would say that about Squid Game. The Netflix version is EXACTLY like that mentality, just aping what Bebop was without understanding it's roots. For example, nobody who watched Bebop as a kid in America seems to understand that the characters themselves are homages to Lupin III, but that would be plain as day to an Asian person that Spike=Lupin, Faye=Fujiko and Jet=Jigen. That's a whole level of nuance that is missing from the original western dub of the anime, and then you have the Netflix adaptation which is a copy of a copy, now it's just "cartoony" as if some boomer saw anime for the very first time and thought that "anime" was just "asian cartoons".

Whoever directed this did a horrible job. As Charlie said, it’s not the actors, and it’s not even just the script writers or the general show, it’s the directing. You can pull off very goofy, cartoonish stuff in live action (and with lower budget) while being good - look at any movie by Taika Waititi. But whoever directed it just did it so horribly wrong. It’s an adaptation, it’s not gonna look like an anime, so don’t try and make it look like an anime. They’re different mediums for a reason. Just… overall, no thanks.

That scene with Ed is like the Rosetta Stone for why this series doesn't work as an adaptation. I think one of the big reasons why this version of Ed doesn't work at all is that they don't seem to understand how to actually use the character. Ed in the original is usually just kind of chilling doing her own thing and being a weirdo, but when she has to actually talk or interact with people, she tones it down noticeably, even though she still sounds very childlike. Here, though, they've made her wackiness an essential part of HOW she interacts with Spike, getting all up in his face and talking nonsense. It's like if you saw an Ed cosplayer at a con and were like "Oh hey, do an impression!" Not to fault the actor though, this is clearly the fault of the writers and directors for adapting the character this way. They clearly WANTED it to turn out this way, and that just makes it all the more embarrassing. There's a lot of stuff like this in this live action version, where they'll just randomly keep some things in while totally misunderstanding why they were there in the original, and as a result, you end up telling a story with no purpose other than to generate revenue. That's one of the cornerstones of a truly bad adaptation imo. It isn't the worst thing in the world, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't think it was embarrassing. No hate to anyone involved, though (except maybe the writers lmao)
@hexcodeff66242 жыл бұрын
I bet you could make a faithful portrayal of Ed's original performance in live action. It's mostly a kid singing songs that pop into its head and wiggling around. Wouldn't be impossible.

Look how they massacred my boy. Also, a big thing for Bebop is that it was essentially Noir first, Anime second. Adaptation totally missed that. Seems like they just wanted everything to be wacky, when there are actually very few wacky elements in Bebop, or rather even the wacky elements carried a strong undertone of seriousness. People were dying, lives were ruined, despair was everywhere. It's a rather dark show with some levity thrown in.
@ajdoku8652 жыл бұрын
this is it! it was a show where serious people were put into the occasional wacky situation. The writers/director made so many changes just for the sake of it, rather than to make an equally compelling story. E.g. not having the girl kill her out of control boyfriend in episode 1. Or changing that character from a ride or die senorita trying to escape the gutter together with someone who had experienced the struggle, to some runaway rich daddy's girl who kills herself for no reason. Not to mention, Faye was knowingly gonna send this girl back to her terrible father.

You're wrong about being too close to source for Ed. The live action Ed is 10x more wild, same with all of the characters. I don't know if it was budget that was the problem with the show. They seemed to have a pretty decent budget looking at a lot of what they added. Feels like it was 100% down to script being the issue with the show. The writers seemed to want to include lots of characters who showed up in the original, but didn't want to keep the story the same. Some characters are now affiliated with other characters. Of the two smart ways to go about an adaptation they went the avatar/dragon ball route. We could have gotten a show about the adventures of the bebop and her crew or a faithful adaptation and either would have worked better. Mashing the two together just makes the whole thing feel weird and off.

@@dominicscreativefilms No, it's more that, like everything else, they have no clue how to portray the character, nor do they care, since they openly resent the source material and its fans. Outside of the fact that most of Ed's facial expressions and body language clearly don't translate well to live action, Ed's behaviour also works better in the actual series because she's a CHILD. A hyperactive, possibly autistic child who's largely raised herself. Here, all they took from that was "hyperactive", and they blew it up, cast an adult in the role and made her a poor man's Tank Girl.
@lucasdude2 жыл бұрын
nah i think they could have done it. they just had to dial it back a bit which wouldnt even make the character any different. ed is someone who is very smart but has a ton of energy, hyper-fixates, doesnt really know what boundaries are. i agree with charlie about how they made her too anime; theres a right way to do it without changing the character. like he said a lot of it is the way they emote & move (which is totally not the actors fault, they just had a bad director)

Biggest miss of the show is that the creators didn't quiet catch what sort of genre Cowboy Bebop is. While the anime itself is being very ambitious in its claim to create a new genre, you can still be described as a Sci Fi Noir type of story. Lots of Jazz, cheesy lines and a fair amount of mystery shrouded around every character but executed really well with a bit of humor thrown in there as a side dish. You have a genuinly good time with these characters without needing to crack jokes all the time. The character Ed is the comedic relief but even she isn't so overwhelmingly present where you would get the impression that its a comedy. they just missed the mark on that basis which lead to a story/ a show that just doesn't work. They're seeing the surface level stuff but not the substance itself. Shame.
@reeba48242 жыл бұрын
I find that so funny cuz there are a lot of live dramas like this that they could've taken inspiration from. First that comes to mind is Breaking Bad, in the way that they have drawn out quiet or subtle scenes but the little things in the shot mattered. Certain words spoken carried tons of weight. Cowboy Bebop had that level of seriousness and it was great.

The sad thing is it could have worked, but they needed to fly it a bit more like blade runner than trying to copy the anime entirely. Bebop as a story would work perfectly well live action, but a direct translation? That was never going to work and it never does. Didn't work for Kakegurui, didn't work any other live action adaption anybody has ever made, they always come out like a big load of bad cheese, melodrama and cringe. Heck, most of what I liked about the Netflix adaptation of Death Note is that if you just changed a few things about it, like the subpar L, and pretending Turner was Light, it could have been a great story about "Ryuk gets bored an drops the note in the human world, again." Another guy from Whami's house shows up to deal with him because N has no interest in the case. Hell, you could do a whole anthology series about the Dethnote and people Ryuk hands it off to hoping it will be as much fun as Light was. You could have done something similar with BeBop, Spike is still cool, but stupid, Jet is hard bitten and Faye is still chasing the almighty woolong, but aside from that you don't need to carbon copy them, and it wasn't a great idea to do so.
@ryerye90192 жыл бұрын
Creative direction came from Andre Nemec who produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Beverly Hills Cop. The tone was off because 1) he may have been too old to understand the difference between film noir anime and American Saturday morning cartoons 2) he just did what he was familiar with and didn't pay attention to the source material. A director with drama and film noir experience would have been perfect. Sin City and Dark Knight director Frank Miller would have been the perfect guy for the job.

I love this man but im sorry this video was made for views. I bet 20 bucks Penguinz skimmed thru the show, and didnt even watch the anime for a refrence point. How can you say its bad when you have nothing to base your opinion off to begin with. Also he mentioned like 3 vague reasons why the show is bad…. Which in reality you can do for any movie or show. Trust me if you are a Bebop fan, you will be entertained by this show, that is if you go into this as a stand alone because thats what it is, they did not replicate the same anime story and direction and instead took their own twist on things which i thought was refreshing. These guys got it as close to the anime than any other live action anime adaption there was. Mustafa Shakir was a better Jet than Jet was lmao. I keep seeing people compare this to the anime when in reality thats impossible to replicate. The live action got super small details right and they did their homework a lot more than other adaptions ive seen based on animes. Is this show amazing… no, but its definitely not bad either and anyone who says it is would not be pleased by anything anyway. The one thing the show lacked was more character development, emotional building and story telling. Thats hard to do in 10 episodes. But this was fun regardless and awesome to see Bebop getting the publicity again.

I honestly didn't hate it. LOVED the soundtrack, and I thought the casting, at least for Spike, Jet, and Faye was good. It's supposed to be goofy and anime-ish, which it succeeds at. Vicious honestly reminds me of Kylo Ren. That is NOT a good thing. Vicious is a villain who should never evoke memories of Kylo Ren. It's nowhere near as good as the original. If the original Bebop is a 10/10, I'd say this is a 5 at best.

A part of the reason anime characters exaggerate their body language so much is because animating subtle human facial and body movements is time consuming and expensive, so they over exaggerate to compensate as part of the medium. You don’t need that in live action and it’s cringe as all hell to watch.

The anime is a work of art. Not just the animation and art style. The story telling is incredible, giving you pieces of the puzzle to the universe and it's characters. This show literally blows it's load the first two episode by dumping every plot point and origin story in our laps and hoping the aesthetics that they green screened into it will make up for it. So disappointed.

The first is "Space Dandy", an insanely entertaining and hilarious space-faring anime. The second is "Carole and Tuesday", more of a drama based on the lives of two young female musicians who are trying to make names for themselves on Mars.
