Agreed. I feel like sometimes people commit too much to the notion that "goofy things work in animation but not in live-action", I think that is a completely arbitrary designation because often times things in anime could be just as goofy or cringe as they would be in live-action, but people often just choose not to question it and the opposite is true when they see it in live-action. Luffy's arm stretching doesn't seem any more or less weird to me in this trailer than it does in the anime.

TB Skyen talked about how Luffy's characterization _has_ to change in a live-action adaptation. His goofy cartoon antics would look, at best, like an unusually callous Tom Green skit. (My bad analogy, not his.) Comedy reads different when there's a human face on it. 3:40: It looks like the figurehead is smiling a big, toothless grin. That's about the vibe you'd want. 13:55: And framing through it like this...those perfectly straight lines running down his arm look weird in the frames you can see them in. No idea what the problem or solution would be (might just need a little blur on those frames), but it looks weird. And also it's a semi-live-action human arm stretching like rubber. Getting a balance between the original's cartoon energy and something that looks right with flesh human people is going to be this show's Everest. If it can overcome that one hurdle, it'll be on top of the world. If it makes a mistake...they've got a long way to fall.

I agree 100% on the need to change Luffy's characterization. While the dialogue at first watch "didn't feel like Luffy" to me, I don't think people want to watch a show where Luffy just stares blank eyed and picks his nose like he would in the manga. It's got to make sense to the normies.

THANK YOU. I am incredibly picky and judgy about trailers, and this one had me smiling from start to finish. Then I went online and saw people saying it was trash *because the actors wear different clothes at some parts*. I am so happy to be able to see other people be enthusiastic about this! I am hyped. And seriously like, I am the person that when I saw the cowboy bepop trailer was cringing and was like 'yeah no this is gonna be bad' and never watched the show. I can, will and DO judge books by their covers. I honestly expected to cringe at least once but the only thing that made me purse my lips in judgement during this trailer was Luffy's first lines (which I credit to just not being used to his voice for Luffy, as I was fine for all his lines after that), and I gave a snort of laughter when Sanji stripped to save Luffy because lol fanservice I see you. I also raised a 'hmm' eyebrow at Nami's wig during the speech about the grand line scene, but I thought it looked better everywhere else we saw it if a little stiff. Still better than Geralt's wig. The fact that they NAILED the perfect balance between anime goofiness and live actions aesthetics is perfect. They really get what translates well, and that was my greatest fear. Like the reason I noped out of Bepop is because Bepop is a serious toned show (mostly), and they really should've made it more serious aesthetics wise because all the anime cuts and angles just make it look way too campy in live action. With One Piece they had a lot more freedom to be goofy, and yet actually restrained themselves more than the bepop trailer, letting the actors and setting speak for itself, while still letting the designs and humor shine in a way that translates well to live action! ...Anyway I could gush more but YEAH SAME THIS IS GONNA BE GOOD. And if it gets multiple seasons I could see it becoming truly great!

This is the energy I was looking for. A lot of people are mad that this show isn't some weird real life photoshop of the manga, but for what the source material looks like this is actually really good so far. The guy in red who's fighting Zoro is most likely Mr. 7, a member of Baroque Works who Zoro mentions in the Manga because he tried to get Zoro in the organization but he didn't accept unless they made him boss. So they fought and Zoro killed him. This is barely mentioned in passing in the Manga but this series is a good opportunity to show us this event and make a bit of foreshadowing of Baroque Works and Crocodile at the same time. I think a lot of it is people being burned time and time again by adaptations that missed the mark, and by Netflix dropping shows after a season, so I get why people's instinctive response is "it'll be shit, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if not". Obviously sometimes it'll be full on hate, but a lot of it is probably people trying to insulate themselves from expected disappointment.
most the dog piling is nitpicks which is a good sign because most live actions have more glaring issues.

Big part of the dog piling is just people having been burned before Another part is grifter vultures circling a potential rage bait meal. Because bebop was such easy money for so many of them. Out of all the Netflix anime adaptations I have seen over the years, this trailer presents what I think is the most promising attempt at faithfully adapting a series to date. Especially if Eiichiro Oda is on board overseeing and quality assuring the whole production. I'm sure it will have its odd janky moments, instances of cringy dialogue, and funky character design choices based on how the staff chose to convert them to look more realistic/grounded in this version of the world, but if the heart is there - which is clearly looks like it is with how much care and effort the staff have been putting into this, then I think we will, at the very least, get a very solid 7/10 entertaining rompus. PS. Geoff?! You DEFINITELY need to check out Our Flag Means Death! That show makes so many creative choices with pirate history that you are gonna get so much out of. Guaranteed!

My hope is that the shot we see of Gum Gum Pistol in the trailer is the only time when we get a long detailed look at Luffy stretching. That can be the first time we see the power, so the audience fully understands what he can do. Then when he uses Gum Gum Pistol after that, the camera stays focused on his torso, you see the arm stretch behind him out of focus, then cut to the enemy getting hit with a rubber fist that's moving too fast for us to get a good look at it. That's probably the best way to integrate the CGI in the fights.

I'm so glad to see more One Piece fans matching my excitement for this adaptation. Even if it has a lot working against it, this feels like THE ONE. The 'live action curse' is kind of a myth but this at least feels like the live action adaptation of a Japanese manga by a Western studio with the best chance to be good in a way that hasn't really been done before. Speed Racer was a once-in-a-lifetime fluke combination of directors, cast, and adaptation, like accidentally discovering a new chemical formula. Alita: Battle Angel was a passion project of a couple big name Hollywood directors who still had to change, cut, alter, and adapt a ton of the source material to get it to mass marketability. Meanwhile One Piece feels like it'll be good and could be amazingly successful not because of alchemical mystery or big-name director clout, but the sheer passion and love for the original material shared by every member of the production, top to bottom. Greg Werner, One Piece columnist for Shueisha and part of the One Piece Podcast, mentioned on Twitter that this feels like an inflection point for adaptations of manga and anime. One Piece is gonna be the thing that makes EVERYONE reevaluate the viability of live action adaptations of these stories, makes the production aparatus of Hollywood really sit up and take notice of the kind of stories and art coming out of non-Hollywood ecosystems, and brings us into a golden age of new and amazing shows and movies we couldn't have gotten before it. I am very hopeful.

I think the Alvida punch is the first time where we will get Luffy using his devil fruit power (at least in a fight), so it makes sense it gets so much attention. I'd imagine later punches will be more like the anime, where it only gives a pause on finishing moves and such. Also, Alvida doesn't need to get thinner, even if she does come back later. It just doesn't seem like something that would land very well with the more body positive views of 2023. She could be made to look better in other ways (or made to look worse for the start), but I doubt they will change the actress later on. They could change the story to remove her, to avoid having so many recurring actors, but I hope they don't. On top of that, they could still have the joke of "I look the same as always" after she looks prettier, which would have an extra layer for the people who read the manga (because we were expecting her to be thin by that point). While it could still go wrong, the fact that Oda is on board and all the staff seems quite passionate about One Piece gives me hope it may be good.

Translating One Piece from Anime to Live Action in theory is already difficult. But to actually do it, man really looking forward to how this goes. I hope they execute the Arlong Arc and capture the emotional gravity of Luffy giving his hat to Nami scene with perfection.

See with Zoro I'm expecting him to do a few things with attack names- First he'll do it once to humor Luffy- Then in his duel with Mihawk, MIHAWK will announce his attack names and that'll switch Zoro over to doing it every time.

Here’s the thing about stretchiness: it is literally always going to look off in live action. Either it’s going to be off-CGI, or it’s going to be visceral body-horror because *HUMAN BODIES ARE NOT MEANT TO DO THAT.* I will take visible CGI over tone-wrecking horror any day of the week.

Looking at the ep titles (according to IMDB) and based on the chronology in the manga I’m unsure of ep 1 & 2 but I’m thinking ep 1 will be the Shanks flashback, Coby/Avita, and possibly the Zoro/(Nami?) meet up. Ep 2 will be Buggy or maybe the conclusion to Captain Morgan? Ep 3 Syrup village. Ep 4-5 Sanji/Mihawk. Ep 6-7 Nami/Arlong. And ep 8 Logue Town. I hope I’m right lol. I’m just so hyped right now. Knowing Netflix, if OP gets renewed it should get at least 3 seasons so if s2 covers the Alabasta Saga, and s3 should cover Skypiea and Water 7/Enis Lobby. I’d actually be pretty satisfied if it made it that far. I’m definitely getting too carried away, but imaging OP manages to get 5 seasons, with it ending right around the time skip, that could be pretty great. Maybe the a final ep could be the crew reuniting and setting sail to fish men island. Then have fans read the manga or watch the anime to find out what’s next. Look at me going on about things that probably won’t happen…Screw it, I’m just going to enjoy this hyped feeling!

As long as they stay true to the material, and they actively have fun making it this has a good shot at being good. The CGI can go ahead and be rough as long as the show is a fun watch.

Do you have poor eyesight, or a brain injury of some sort? Even this trailer is enough to see they aren't staying true to any of the source material

I'm cautious about all this, but it's looking better than the other adaptations. Good vibes. If this succeeds, I'm really curious to see how Netflix handles the more "visually challenging" Straw Hats. I mean, Brook's a no-brainer (pun thoroughly intended) - just do what they did with Ryuk and CG some skeletal features on the head and hands. I can see Chopper as a Henson-esque puppet, more in line with _The Dark Crystal_ or _Labyrinth_ than a Muppet. Even then, I'd lean a bit more into his more grounded original appearance than his more abstract "cuter" look. If done with CG, it could have a kind of *Paddington* vibe, if done right. A puppet would be better, though. His other Points are another story, but that's not too difficult to work around. The only one that would worry me is *Franky.* To realise his Popeye forearms - or any of his cyborg features - without descending into Uncanny Valley territory is a big challenge, be it CG or practical. Making a guy that weird into a living, breathing being is walking a razor's edge.

If you look at the anime when luffy one punches alvida, his hand does take a pause when he stretches, so the trailer is accurate as a one to one shot anime vs live action

Glad to see your reaction. I watched the trailer before reading anything about it and was shocked at how good it looks. Between the physical sets, great casting, general vibes, and the fact that everyone involved seems to be a fan of the source material, I'm cautiously optimistic. I know one reaction video I watched shat on Luffy for not being Asian and it's like bro, have you not seen the creator's notes? He's South American. Also, multiple ones said that the Lord of the Coast looked awful. I think it looks great. Everyone agrees that the knocked Buggy out of the park. He actually looks menacing.

I try going into these things with an open mind and usually end up being disappointed. I don't know if it's my recent love for One Piece, but this actually looks good. That said my expectations are set for this being a live action adaptation with a ton of changes, and some people just aren't ready for that. As long as the story is more or less the same and the characters feel right, I'm sure itll be a good time.

The big question mark for me is how they portray brutality. There are some heavy things that happen in the oringinal that none of the new viewers will be prepared for. - Kid Sanji almost killing Zeff for his food, only to find out the old man gave away all the food there was (having to eat his own leg to survive) - Nami hacking away at her own arm in a rage, before Luffy steps in on the Arlong situation I predict those scenes will hit a lot different once we see it in Live

Out of all the reactionist to this One Piece live action trailer, I gotta say, yours is by far my favorite. Oh and Zoro was fighting the original Mr. 7. "Mr. 7 was a frontier agent of Baroque Works. I mostly know One Piece through cultural osmosis, so I can’t speak to the accuracy of anything, but I’m actually kind of excited for this. It’s always hard to balance the anime goofiness with the limits of physical acting, but this is the BEST I’ve seen in a live action adaptation (as far as we can tell from a trailer). I’ve endured my share of janky (Fullmetal Alchemist) and bad (Avatar) adaptations, so I’m excited for one to be, like, pretty good. The actors especially seem enthusiastic and charismatic in their roles, so I’m hopeful.

Ran across your video and just thought I’d drop this thought I don’t see anyone talking about in terms of the Netflix shows. With the recent change to their subscriptions to make multiple households using accounts pay extra fees, they have increased their subscriptions but the one underlying change along with that everyone seems to forget is they added a cheaper ad tier. Before shows didn’t get more than 3 seasons due to costs, your value as a show only goes as far as the subscribers you bring in. While they gauged views in popularity it was a minor factor to subscribers, and there are only so many of those. With their ad tier now like cable tv it can become a bigger factor. So now it’s subscriptions + ad tier views = $$ for Netflix. This will allow for longer running shows on Netflix. If One Piece is at least decent and gets a high ad tier view count, you could warrant more seasons in Netflix’s eyes I’d imagine. Something other shows didn’t have in the past, which could be lucky for anyone hoping for its success that it’s coming out right after this change was made.

This is already a step above a lot of other live-action adaptations because they clearly put a ton of effort and care into making this as good as possible. I really want this to be good, and this trailer is a lot more promising than expected. I’m trying to keep my expectations in check (been burned too many times to be super optimistic about it), but I’m starting to get excited. Or maybe Geoff’s excitement is rubbing off on me. Either way, I’m getting excited!

The thing about Netflix canceling is that, as long as the show is sufficiently successful to be a phenomenon worth its price, it's Netflix cancelation proof. It's a Tomorrow Studios production of an IP that Tomorrow Studios owns the license for funded by Netflix. If they get canceled, they can shop it around to another network with no issue.

The problem with the stretching effect is that it’s too stiff looking. There’s no fluidity in the actor’s motions when performing the initial movement. There’s going to be one helluva recoil so he should be moving like his body is actually made of rubber. Like how rubber expands and sort of pulls you back due to the force behind whatever energy is moving it. But who knows, it may look better in other shots.
@Shiiwata Жыл бұрын
stretching effects will never look good. there is literally no live action series or movie where it looks good. there is a reason why marvel didn't even bother with ms. marvel and just changed her powers for the live action series.

They just go for that it looks weird and embrace the strangeness of it. That people accept it easier. There isno way to look it good, but they could go make it part of the humor how weird it looks.
