Usopp's nose doesn't have to be too long, just a bit long to signify that he's a liar. What you don't seem to understand is that what makes OP unique is the strange characters. Without those strange characteristics, it will look like a high school musical production or any other teen movie. Sanji for example has no identifiers that differentiates him. No stubble, no eyebrows, no cigarette, even his yellow hair had very visible black roots. Aside from him wearing that black suit everywhere, nothing about him tells us he's Sanji. It's like if Buggy didn't have any makeup. These are not complaints, but accurate and easily doable fixes.

If you actually look at how oda described each character originally, Luffy was Brazilian, Nami Swedish, Franky American, Zoro Japanese, usop African, sanji French, Nico robin Russian, etc so it actually follows what Oda saw his characters as. And oda said he wouldn't let it release unless it was perfect

That would be too costly for a series, there are three possibilities: 1. they use a costume and puppets, that they could do really really really well as it is reutilizable. And also make chopper feel shame or something letting them wrap him in bandages or a coat to obscure 95% of his body. 2. They completely remove chopper from the story (a sad but real possibility). 3. They do mid to bad CGI, and avoid showing chopper the most they realistically could (the most likely choice).

I think that their interpretation of Buggy is OBJECTIVELY correct. While yes, Buggy is a comedic character, he is still "in world" a at least slightly intimidating pirate captain. While Oda's design makes him seem more silly, there isn't a realistic way to make him look the same way in live action without pushing it over the edge into uncanny territory. Same goes with Sanji's eyebrows, and Usopp's nose. Though hopefully the Gum-Gum attacks aren't too cringe with the yelling, cause it seems like it could cross that line.

If I had to wager, I think the trailer already showed us where Season 1 will end. Particularly the scene where the 5 original Strawhats have their legs up on barrel, proclaiming their goals out as they prepare to enter the Grand Line. That scene just feels like a natural stopping point for the narrative with the added benefit that the chaotic ride up then back down the mountain would be a great way to start season 2 with an action scene that could reintroduce the characters to viewers (example: Sanji and Zoro's bickering while Usopp panics). Also I dont think Chopper would be the end of season stinger reveal, as they stopped off at the island where they picked up Vivi before hitting Chopper's island

Oda is heavily involved with the production. The producer of OPLA, Matt Owen, said that Sanji will be more of a flirt than a womanizer. His goal is to make the adaptation natural irl while not losing the essence of what OP and the characters are all about. The outfits are based on Oda's OP color book. The producer himself is a real weeb and a huge OP fan btw. He will add some Easter eggs for the manga/anime fans (there's actually some in the teaser). He's caught up to the manga actually. Nami actress is a huge Nami fan, so it's like her dream come true. As you can tell, I'm a big OP fan lol The OP community in general feels good or ok about the teaser. I'm at least a bit relieved that the people working behind it understand the series. I won't have high expectation, but it's a win if the live action turns out decent.

I think the biggest difference is that the original Cowboy Bebop is a very short, highly episodic show that they tried to turn into a serialized long running narrative, so they had to add a bunch of stuff to expand the story. Some of this stuff was pretty good. Jet having a kid was a great addition. But man they destroyed Vicious. One Piece won't have this issue. There's so so much story to adapt. They won't need to add anything. In fact, they'll probably struggle to get everything important into the 8 hours they have.

The Netflix crew responsible for Cowboy Bebop didn't have the slightest respect or regard for the original material. From John Cho saying he wouldn't watch the original to the writers talking about "updating" Keiko Nobumotos script, it clearly came for a place of snarky contempt rather then reverence and respect. Also, regarding the story, all episodes are crucial to the narrative since they characterize the crew and are all imerse in the theme of "the dream", which is where Spikes nihilism comes from. The events from the "main story" are all experienced in contrast with this aura, this feeling that all their lives are already over. The melancoly in Spikes voice (something the american VA absolutely missed) was replaced with this stupid, snappy delivery, and if all of the netflixz version writers came together, they wouldn't make 1% of Watanabes skill as a director. I think theres a beautiful, masterful live action version of the show that requires a very talented crew to pull off.

For us in German countries its the best. Because the German dub of One Piece is freakin iconic and they are going to use all the original voice actors to sync this show. So for us the One Piece experience is even more real. I wonder is this happening in Japan too? i feel like one thing that Joey didn’t really mention is that Oda was involved in every single part of the show, even the producers said that if Oda wasn’t satisfied they wouldn’t go through with it until he was. So the fact that we are seeing the trailer means that Oda has given the thumbs up to release the trailer. As a complete 180 with Cowboy Bebop, that was more of a Fan project, while this Live Action has been in production for the last 6 years. Also, there will be 8 episodes and each one will be about an hour long I hope people see this comment so they are informed 🙏

I'm so excited for this to come out, I'm not a One Piece fan, but a Mackenyu's fan and I'm really excited to watch his performance. I really want this one to succeed. I am absolutely watching. I've been following this since they announced it. The cast alone is so passionate and has so much love for the project. Big One Piece fan and I've been following the live action news for some time... If the looks don't bother you (as it did with me ngl) that much and you're more worried about how the story is going to go, you can actually be optimistic. Oda is highly involved in every creative choice, plus the writer is genuinely a huge One Piece fan that had Oda's personal approval. So out of everything, I have faith they're going to deliver in that aspect. But the dialogue, acting, hmmm that could be another problem. Overall I'm actually surprised a lot of people seem to like at as much as the people who don't!

Exactly. I know Joey is taking it from the perspective of a Japanese watcher first, but many viewers of One Piece or people I have gotten into One Piece watched the dub first. It's funny because my main concern with the live action before the teaser was the visuals, not the story and character writing. The lead writer for this project is Matt Owens, who's been on a few one piece podcasts talking about his role. He's a huge fan of the series with an enormous amount of respect to the source material. Obviously there will be changes, there has to be. Not all of One Piece's humor can translate one to one into live action without seeming too tacky. There will likely be some tweaks to characters (Sanji probably won't be as perverted for example) but I have faith that they'll accurately capture the heart and essence of the characters. From the teaser, the visuals look solid! Obviously, One Piece is a fantastical series and we'll have to see how the full product looks in action once it releases, but it certainly could be much, much worse.

That combined with Oda's input and the fact that the directors and cast are really passionate about one piece and we could have a really good adaptation. It would probably take them about a year or even two to produce a new season and going off of how much this is producing it would probably be 10 seasons. So probably 10 - 20 years to make the show up to where the manga is. The youngest actor of the main 5 is luffys actor who is currently 19 and the oldest is namis actor at 30. There is deaging stuff nowadays though.

I heard this was going to be 8 episodes each being 1 hour, i think its going to end either at Logue Town or Reverse Mountain since we get to see the scene where each crew member puts there feet on the barrel. Each actor from the main crew looks dope really excited for Zoro since i know what the actor has played in. My biggest issue is what the fishmen are going to look like but besides all of that it looks great.

Could be wrong but they have not cast characters like Dragon and Smoker, so I think they're going to change it so the dreams/barrel scene happens after Arlong Park but before Logue Town. Or maybe change how Logue Town goes, but I cant see it without Smoker as he was such an important part of that arc.

The actor who plays Arlong has said they used make up and physical additions for the fishmen, but considering what they did with Buggy's make-up, that could be pretty cool. At least they're not using CGI - I like the idea of it being more physical than not.

My only issues are Nami's wig, which looks really unnatural, the color grading which I thought would make the colors pop up more, and the Gum Gum Pistol at the end. Luffy looks too stiff, it seems like his arms just elongates on its own while he's supposed to give momentum to his arm (dunno if it's the right word), like he should have used his whole body to swing his arm backward to make it look more powerful. I'm still pretty satisfied with this teaser tho, I'm genuinely in awe with Buggy's look, he's so terryfying omg. He was the character I was looking foreward the most in this series, and I don't think I could be more satisfied

Buggys will be very simple, it just needs a green suit and clothing where the body parts end. It is Luffys stretching that is going to be hard, especially when it comes to the face.

I feel like many "anime" fans didn't like this first look because it doesn't look serious. But as a One Piece fan for over 20 years, One Piece is campy and about the adventure. Yes there are serious themes and undertones, but Oda works to ensure that it's still a joy to read every week. The costumes and looks for the main crew look good so far. For people that prefer the subbed anime, all you would need to do is watch it with the Japanese audio and translated subtiles(which are mostly expansive across language offerings and good quality from Netflix). Finally, I liked the CGI. Everything we saw looked right for the setting of One Piece with the blend of live action. For people that don't like it.... please share an example of better CGI that would fit the narrative of One Piece. Oda made a public statement confiming that he was hard at work on this project and that he had final say for when it was ready to be released. Oda only agreed to doing this if he had significant involvement and if he got final sign off. So far I'm hopeful for the project. I just hope that people's expectations don't go sky high for no reason.

I don't know why anyone would want a serious and grim Onepiece. Though I wish they reduce the cringe. It works in animation but is terrible in live action. Onepiece should be a comedic action adventure about a group of friends much closer to a family

I feel like the made Buggy scary intentionally since this was the one point in the story where he was a threatening villain. Also, maybe they could have slightly curved Sanji's eyebrows up at the ends. It would have felt distint without being a visual disaster.

The main thing I'm worried about from this trailer is how Luffy is written and going to come across as. The trailer leaned pretty heavily into his goofy/comedic side, but most of that comes from how unhinged and aloof he is. Hopefully that comes across. Other than that, it doesn't look that bad, the sea king looked really good.

As Eiichiro Oda is directly involved with this i dont think the story would be that bad. And another thing the costumes are all canon they have taken a lot of Cover Story images. There's also a lot of things to see like you missed Garp's ship. They added some sbs stuff too. So hopefully they will be very considerate of the fanbase as Matt Is a One Piece fan. Hope it does well.

Showrunner has previously stated that season 1 will encompass only the East blue saga. Also I think jarring is the best way to put it for my first watch through. I think the best way to think of it as this is an adaptation and not a live action remake, which means certain things like some of the humor, attack names, and stuff like that will be definitely changed a bit to better suit the wider audience while keeping the spirit of the story intact. Highly recommend checking out Matt Owens talking about it with some of the big one piece KZbinrs like rogers base and Randy Troy

Creating a live version for an anime is always a tough thing to pull off, especially a show like ONE PIECE, but I know the cast and crew put a lot of passion into the creation of this live action show, so I'll be rooting for them as we approach the release date.

The head writer Matt Owens is a HUGE OP fan, I think he did his best to do it justice. He mentioned when he started he thought if there was going to be a live-action for One Piece he knew he had to be the one to do it so he knows it will truly be the best it can be with the budget and resources available. Oda is also extremely involved in the whole production, and not involved as in given a random 'role' so they can say he's involved. Oda was one of the people who made the final decision for the Strawhat's casting, he also reviewed the storyboards and scripts of every episode and gave them feedback on it before it got the greenlight to be filmed and he had the final say on when they can release the season.

If Rocket Raccoon is anything to go by, I don’t think Chopper would pose an issue if handled correctly. He is frequently mistaken for a tanuki (which look similar to raccoons), so just make him a tanuki similar to Rocket with reindeer hooves, tail, fur and antlers.

There are definitely some comedic vibes (and certain scenes) that are sort of anchored to the characteristics of their original designs that will have to be omitted, unfortunately, like with Usopp's nose. Will be interesting to see their take on a more "realistic" version of the crew. Personally the only real gripe I have with the trailer as a whole is how much the serious tone clashes with the first season, which seems apparent that this is where it'll take place. Went from "Lets make friends and have a grand adventure to obtain the one piece!" to "TONIGHT... WE DINE... IN HELL!"

I love the chemistry. I love that they all seem to kind of hate each other and that they lamp-shaded the attack name thing. Because I think they had to. But I don't think the stretching looks good. I have to see on a big screen when the VFXs are finished. But I also saw a reactioner make the point that the pan and slo-mo we see in the trailer is probably the best look we will see of it. Because of the elastic of Luffy's rubber, it will probably be so fast you can barely see what's happening. My biggest concern is how theyre going to fit the whole Saga Blue into 8 episodes

I dunno , the whole unwilling at first allies thing , is overdone in any holywood movies (especially even more since the success of Avengers) ... i could do without it . I could see yeah Nami and Zorro not vibing at first , but they are pretty much supposed to be charmed by Luffy's candor and good nature . Of course , it might still be there , it's a teaser edit , so who knows how those scenes actually truy unfold ... but i hope it's not gonna be the tone for that starting crew for multiple episodes

Everyone had either a bit of friction with Luffy or a priority quest before joining , but when they were in, they were in . This is not really the same as those overdone and generic “ We can't stand each other , but gotta work together “ vibes from the usual live shows and movies . Which is what i get from the teaser . Granted i'm passing judgement on a few seconds and just a teaser , but that's all i can react to , for now .

I LOOOOVE the cast. I mean, pulling off Luffy vibes without being unbearably cringe is by itself a feat. This guy actually makes it work. Zoro and Usopp are perfect, just absolutely perfect in every way. Nami and Sanji are great too. I don't expect a revolutionary masterpiece. I just expect a nice little abridged play, an homage for the fans. Nailing down the Muhiwaras I think is the hardest part, and they did it flawlessly. So far, I'm excited.

Luffy is dumb, goofy, unapologetic, brash and cool while Aang is silly, optimistic, appeasing, boyish and amiable. Which one of these descriptions fit the trailer Luffy better, would you think?
