They clearly weren't going for historical accuracy, so that part definitely didn't bother me. I *was* seriously annoyed by color choices, textile choices, and fit, though. Our main characters are in fairly drab colors that make them blend into the background of lots of shots - sure, highlighting the Featheringtons as garish is one thing, but there's a middle ground between ostentatious like poor Penelope and completely invisible like an extra and a lot of times they didn't hit it, especially with Daphne. A lot of the textiles just look cheap, and that *really* took me out of the story because nearly every character we're following is wealthy. And the fit, AAAGGGH the fit! Empire waists hitting in the middle of busts! Are these people having their clothing custom-made and tailored to their own bodies or not? Just....AAAGGHH!

Bonnets cover the face and can be a nightmare for lighting and shooting the actor's face. That's why shows and movies prefer to avoid them. I remember the costume designer and director of Handmaid's Tale talking about how difficult it is to shoot with the bonnets but they have to since they are important to the story.
@ArtemisScribe3 жыл бұрын
@@Tracydot3 yeah but other productions have shown how you can easily keep a clear face and a bonnet, like The Young Victoria with their sheer bonnets or last year's Emma with their high and wide bonnets that sat back from the face, the wings on Handmaid's Tale are supposed to be claustrophobic and restrictive, it's a requirement of the setting, it's a totally different thing to a fashionable bonnet. While there are a few people who harp on about historical accuracy, I think most people were irritated about how the style choices weren’t accurate to the characters or the universe itself. In no version of fantasy regency does the waistline cut across the breasts in such an unflattering way. The trips to the dressmaker are a core part of the story, so it’s immersion breaking for the dresses to not fit. And if they’re all hand made, why does each character have 50 dresses? I feel like we should have been seeing the same three or four dresses on rotation throughout. The designers then could have focused on a small amount of high quality dresses for lead characters, and they could have been made in more expensive natural fabrics that would look and feel flattering. Every choice in TV and film should be intentional. If they’re deviating from historical accuracy to create a fantasy, the creative liberties they take have to actually make sense with that objective. Instead they kinda made everyone look way cheaper and nastier than, say, in Emma (2020) where we saw only a few gowns but each one was *beautiful*.

Bespoke! Handmaid! So detailed. And yet they omit shifts and petticoats. And no, you don't get an award for wearing something women wore daily for hundreds of years. Especially when we still have bras, girdles, and spanx today. I'd also appreciate an explanation for the tight-lacing scene when tight-lacing was irrelevant in the Regency era.
@lyndabethcave38353 жыл бұрын
Posted this on another comment, but here’s why I think the tightlacing scene works: . . .the tightlacing scene adds a LOT to the series. It's the perfect way to set up the world in a super short scene. It gives SO much information about what Lady Featherington is like (a bit clueless about the fashion of the day), what the show will be like (it's gonna mess with your historical Regency drama sensibilities), what the world is like. The entire show is a commentary on how modern people view the oppression of women in the Regency era, (among other things), and thus I think it's a brilliant visual metaphor for Bridgerton itself. The tightlacing trope in cinema is a shorthand for "women's oppression", and the audience is used to that. I don't necessarily think it's an accurate or good trope, buuuut it's what the average cinemagoer understands these days. I think Bridgerton does a good job of utilising it and subverting it (by taking stays that couldn't even be tight-laced and making it tightlaced they stretch the trope to the point of ridiculous to make the points I mentioned above).
@Pr0fessorScience3 жыл бұрын
@@lyndabethcave3835 your theory is clever as hell, but I'd have to guess that the average romance-novel-turned-Netflix-series viewer doesn't actually know or care enough about historical fashion for it to even occur to them that tightlacing would be completely pointless during an era of empire waists. So, to me, it just ends up feeling like I'm watching a mistake happening. The tightlacing still isn't remotely as bad as the fit of the clothing, though - I don't know who thought it would work to show us wealthy people in bespoke, tailor-made dresses with waistlines that literally cut mid-boob.

It isn't just any other entertaining series , but something that's greatly apart. It has set the standards not only for any up coming period dramas but also to shondaland itself. This season of the Bridgerton series has upped the audience expectations to such great heights that shondaland will now have the actual challenge to keep up with the audience expectations in their upcoming seasons . I wish they'd dressed Daphne more appropriately after her status change. I get they wanted to emphasise how young she was, but it would have been nice to see her in richer fabrics and better accessories as the story progressed, particularly at the ball they threw. Her hair was 95% dreadful - no deb would go about with her hair down all the time, and she constantly looked unkempt and dowdy, despite the Bridgertons being very rich and considered the epitome of taste. When she occasionally had it up, and with the miserable, unflattering bangs/fringe out of her face, she looked a million times better. It's kind of fine for Eloise to be a mess, not being out yet, and being less concerned about appearance and more rebellious, but Daphne was the "good" girl. For season two, I would like to see them wearing shifts or chemises under their stays... and no tight lacing, which is ridiculous in a Regency silhouette. And Queen Charlotte can certainly be different but not wearing clothes that are literally decades out of fashion. There are historical gowns and portraits of her wearing the Regency fashion. Also I would like to see more accurate hairstyles, Regency updos and curls can be quite pretty, so why have long hair hanging to one side? I realize the show is fantasy and I enjoy that aspect of it - not every detail needs to be historically accurate. But in season 2 it would be nice if they would address these couple of issues.

I don't mind that they weren't historical accuracy because I didn't expect them to be since it was Netflix and Shondaland. I expected them to be big, beautiful, bold, and being influence by the period, which they were. The thing that drove me crazy was the heads not being covered when they went out, since they had some nice hats in the show. I wasn't expecting bonnets, but coverings of some kind. And the loose hair down, just looked silly and too modern. It made several of the actresses look way too young.

i really never understood why costume designers always want to compromise historical accuracy and omit essential articles of clothing to that time period just because they “dont like it” or because they think it’s not pleasing to the eye

Yeah, like doesn't Netflix have people who do research or is that not in the budget for a company that already made 7500 polyester dresses?
@szzsuzsanna57813 жыл бұрын
I mean just look at the majority of the comments - the viewers don't care about accuracy, but much more about it having a WoW effect and resembling the idea of a historical costume. You need to put in some effort (care, curiosity, understanding) to like something that is not pleasing to our modern eyes. Netflix is the new mass entertainment where this does not sell.

The Queen wearing an Afro wig was pretty cool and actually didnt look out of place because women wore crazy hairstyles then even rocking Ostrich feathers and ornaments in their hair. I heard Marie Antoinette had a toy ship as a hair piece.

Interestingly for the year 1813, her look would've been outdated among younger generation. Well, I guess having her fashion not updated makes sense since she's an older woman and older people typically stick to their own era's fashion trends and taste
